Located right in Berlin-Mitte, one of Berlin's most popular neighborhoods in the center of the city with countless bars, restaurants, galleries and shops. There is a park with swings, ping pong, beach volleyball about 300 meters away on Alte Schönhauser Straße, which is great for children, and many other parks within walking distance. Both Hackescher Markt and Alexanderplatz are less than 5 minutes away.
The next supermarket („Edeka“) is on Rosenthaler Straße, right opposite the Hackesche Höfe. The next bakery – and a quite fancy one – is „Zeit für Brot“ on Alte Schönhauser Straße 4 (walk towards Rosa-Luxemburg Platz). Whole food stores can be found 10' up the street on Senefelder Platz ("LPG") and at Hackescher Markt ("Bio company"), 5' away.
Cafes / Eating out:
There is „Kaffee Mitte“, a hugely popular italian coffee shop, just a few steps away on the corner of Weinmeisterstraße and Alte Schönhauser Straße. I also recommend Barcomi’s Deli (best for Bagels, sandwiches, cakes) in a courtyard on Sophienstraße 21. „yamyam“ on Alte Schönhauser Straße 6 is a great Korean restaurant, right next to it you find „Blaues Band“, a relaxed cafe and restaurant which also serves a decent breakfast. On the other side of the street there is the famous Vietnamese restaurant „Monsieur Vong“ (easy to recognize by the long queues in front).
Among the countless Italian restaurants in the area, I recommend „Hartweizen“ on Torstraße 96. Way more basic is the hugely popular pizza place „I Due Forni“ on Schönhauser Allee 12. The kitchen (serving mostly pizza and a small selection of authentic southern italian dishes) is simple but usually good. „hashi“ serves japanese soul food on Mulackstraße/Rosenthaler Straße. Easy going bars include Pony Bar, right on Alte Schönhauser Straße 42 (rather young crowd), and Hackbarths (Auguststraße 49a) with somewhat more mixed demographics.
The apartment is ideally connected to tram, S-Bahn and Underground. The apartment is 40 meters from the U-bahn (underground trains), which takes you to Kreuzberg in 10'. Trams and S-Bahn (taking you to Bahnhof Zoo or Friedrichshain in 10-15') are 5' away.
For info on public transport, check (website hidden) - their tickets are valid for S-Bahn, Tram and subway. You might want to consider purchasing a multi-day pass such as the „72 hours“-ticket.
For bike hire check out (website hidden) - it is right on Alte Schönhauser Str.
Feel free to make phone calls. You will find the telephone on the floor in the same room (next to the sofa). Should you want to make long distance calls, please use 01081 before the country code (and leave some money when you leave).
To watch TV, please use the black sony remote for the TV (on/off) and the white remote for the receiver (channels, loudness).
The DVD (grey remote) should be self-explanatory: the TV recognizes the signal and automatically switches to the DVD if turned on.
For the stereo, please use the grey remote. You can plug in your iPod/iphone ("SCL" on the remote). The (active) speakers need to be turned on with the multi plug under the white cupboard to the right of the TV). (Please make sure to turn it off after use.)
Our neighbors are easy-going, but please do not put them to the test and keep the volume to a "normal" level. The building is quite clairaudient and Berlin's clubs just a taxi ride away.
In a basket you will find bread, butter etc. for breakfast and some drinks.
Please also help yourself to tea and coffee and feel free to use the pavoni espresso machine (and the espresso!). However, please make sure you know how to use it and – please – use it with care (and consult the manual if needed). Otherwise, there is a coffee press in the shelf to the right of the machine. The kettle in the kitchen is an electronic device. It looks like a normal one, which is why friends have put it on the stove before – not a good idea.
Should you decide to use other grocieries/drinks, please feel free but make sure to replace them. The wine in particular is of the pricier sort and starts at around 10 EUR. Should you want to open a bottle, please leave 10 EUR.
To use the dish washer make sure to check whether it is plugged in (electric socket is on top of the machine). The on/off button is on the left of the panel. Before choosing a program, please press „reset“ on the panel. Washing tabs can be found under the sink.
Ironing board and iron can be found in the big silver cupboard in the kitchen. →
Fresh towels can be found in the shelf. For the washing machine chose a programm (e.g. 40 C’ etc.) and press “start”. (Please make sure to turn it off after use).
The flat is a non-smoking flat. Please use the balcony. Please do not sit on the windows benches. Others have tried before – they are not as robust as they look.
Before you leave, please...
•turn OFF the heating,
•close all windows,
•leave the linen on your beds and towels on the bathroom floor, and
•make sure you lock the apartment.
When you exit the apartment, please just put the keys in the mailbox ("Novy", downstairs in the main entrance).
Leonard was very well organised, flexible, trusting and welcoming, so the stay could not have been easier. His huge flat was immaculate and quite inspiring, full of books (in English and German), great design, and plenty of light. He had generously left us breakfast and beer to get the stay started. It was also very quiet, looking onto internal courtyards, and warm. I'd love to go back in summer and make more use of the deck. I'd recommend Leonard 100%.
We had a fantastic stay, even though we never met Leonard he was fantastic and couldn't be more helpful throughout the entire process. Great location & easy to find, very spacey warm apartment, breakfast basket was a nice touch thanks for everything Leonard. Would recommend to anyone looking to stay in Berlin.
The apartment is ideally situated in the heart of Berlin making getting around via metro or taxi rather easy. It's a lived in apartment rather than a pure rental so you will feel right at home. I will definitely look to rebook upon my return to Berlin.
Leonard is a wonderful host - his info sheet on the flat and the area was great, and the breakfast basket made us feel very welcome. Although we never met in person he was easy to contact and very helpful. The apartment's location is fantastic, right in the middle of Mitte and with excellent U-bahn connections. The apartment itself is even better than its description - spacious, comfortable and tastefully decorated. Staying there has made our visit to Berlin even nicer than it would have been otherwise. I highly recommend the flat and will happily stay there at my next visit to Berlin.
Indeed very spacious place, perfect location in Mitte, 5 min walking from Hackesche Hoefe, greta shops, coffees, bars around. Beds very comfortable; felt very welcome although we didn't meet actually Leonard; appt very well maintained, vintage design furniture; defintely a place to get back to and stay again. Don't miss the Wednesday jam session just 3 min away B-Flat Jazz club in Rosenthalerstrasse
Einfach grossartig!
