The space
For years we've been daydreaming about building a little house one day. Then we finally made it happen - using our own two hands (DIY! The Portland way!) and with the help of some great friends. We had a vision in mind, but a lot of the details came together as we built, based on what materials we had available to us.

Downstairs is the kitchen, living room with convertible couch, and bathroom with tiny clawfoot tub. Access the upstairs via STAIRS (not a ladder), where you'll find our loft bedroom with comfortable queen sized bed.

Sustainable design is important to us, and the house is constructed and furnished from an eclectic array of reclaimed materials - squirreled away over the years, and now creatively reused and repurposed. See photo captions for a detailed walkthrough of the house.

The Rustic Modern Tiny House is located in a historically Black neighborhood that has seen many changes through the decades due to gentrification. The adjacent N Williams Ave is full of modern lofts, trendy shops, and eateries. However it used to be the center business area of the Black community.

We wish to be good neighbors, holding awareness that these shifting neighborhood dynamics are directly tied to historical and ongoing forces that continue to disinvest in, displace, and uproot the local Black community.

The purple house directly across the street from the Rustic Modern Tiny House is the BEAM Village Learning Hub, which runs educational programming supporting Black youth. BEAM Village began as a small pilot program at Portland Community College. We have a long-standing relationship with the organization and are continued supporters of their mission and efforts.

Hello! We are a husband-wife creative design team that designs and builds livable (and lovable) small spaces. We combine our passion for re-purposed materials with a dash of ingenuity and intuition. Our work has appeared on: HGTV, FYI Network's Tiny House Nation, Food & Wine Magazine, CNN, Glamour Magazine, UK's the Sun, Bob Vila, and Refinery 29.

We come from varied backgrounds. Michael is a musician and has toured extensively and recorded with artists such as: Pink Martini, 3 Leg Torso, and David Grisman from the Grateful Dead. Jenna's background is in the tech industry, running business operations for tech companies large and small.

Together, we love crafting unique spaces, and filling them with well-loved pieces we've carefully collected through the years. We consider it a singular treat that we can share these spaces with you.
