Popular Changle Lu between Maoming Lu and Shaanxi Lu in the heart of the former French Concession. This is THE location to be. Neighbor house is turned into an italian bistro. Back entrance leads to Jinxian Lu, a street full of life...hip cafes like the Pier39 or Citizen and well known spa's and shops. In the alleys outside the house you will likely see elderly people gathering together playing mahjong, women having dancing lesson or little kids playing with their kites. It is a local Chinese community with all its charm - don't expect a sterile state of the art compound - this is almost the life style as it has been decades ago.
For the fashion lover of you: This area has one of the widest selection of private owned fashion boutiques in the world.
Changle Lu Bus stop at your doorstep. Metro South Shaanxi Lu a 5 min walk. You can also rent a scooter to discover FFC. Supermarkets, Restaurants and touristy sites in walking distance.
Other Things to Note
This is an classic and rare lane house in an old Chinese community in the middle of historic Shanghai. It’s such a great experience for the open minded, but if you are not this type, you might be better off in one of the dozen high rise apartments or in a hotel room. If you want to be immersed in authentic local Shanghai, in a beautifully renovated loft-style apt, this apt is for you.
Any further questions, let us know :)
Access to property and apartment only for guests that booked and paid.
Important: A copy of the guests passport need to be provided via email (pdf or jpg) before arrival! Strictly no smoking inside the apartment.
General rules of good manners:
Please keep the common spaces clean, respect late night hours, turn off AC and other electronic devices when leaving the house, especially AC as it otherwise blows the calculated average utility costs that we estimated to fairly price the apartment. Last but not least, please leave the apartment as you found it at your arrival.
Very nice stay at Changle Lane. Space is comfortable, clean, and nicely designed. Tim and his assistant, Victoria, are super helpful and responsive. Drop a note if you need anything, and they'll get back to you quickly.
To get the the apartment, you need to go up two flights of winding, narrow, wooden steps. (Keep this in mind if you trouble going up stairs.) This winding passage is a bit dark and dingy, and you're sure to spot traditional Chinese families doing their wash, cooking up dinner, or generally lounging about. They're super friendly folk, so just say "Nǐ hǎo" and smile!
Once you get to the apartment, you'll find a bright and cheery space with all the modern amenities you might desire. The AC works well, and I had no issue with hot water: there was plenty of it, and it was consistent in temperature. (Tim replaced the water heater in less than 24 hours when he discovered there was a problem.)
The neighborhood itself is perfectly located. Nearby are train stations, bars, restaurants, a Starbucks, and parks. Just below the apartment, there's Palatino Restaurant--great place for Italian cuisine with outdoor seating. Also nearby is IAPM mall, where you can shop for groceries at City'super, a chain of supermarkets that caters to westerners and have many international foods and goods.
I thought the loft was very cute and it was clear a good deal of work went into the renovation the location in terms of access to subways, food and taxis was great. The entrance was a bit of a culture shock. The lobby (if you can call it that) was a steep set of stairs which were filthy. I was a little concerned about descending the stairs with my luggage. Also the shower, well in a word bad. The water was, very hot, ice cold, moderately cold and generally not a pleasant experience.
This is an excellent place to stay no question. Whether you are in Shanghai for business or pleasure I would highly recommend this place. Away from the crowds of the Bund but only 10/15 minute taxi ride away costs about $4 USD. Also five minute walk to Shanxi South Metro station so you can get anywhere fast. I arrived about 10 PM and Tim's staff member Victoria was there , all really very easy. It will get you out of the hotels & give you a feel for "real China" , French concession is just very cool, bars , clothes etc etc. Check out some of the bars in Jinxian St , and try the house special cocktails. Also the Garden Hotel is 2 minutes away if you wish to use business centre or get a cab ( can be hard from the street in Shanghai , everyone using an app). No brainer , just book it
Tim's loft is a beautiful space in a great location. However we had a number of problems, which slightly marred our stay. A big problem that we had with the apartment was that for two days we had absolutely no hot water. While we said that we had a problem, it took a lot of back and forth to get someone to come and take a look, and once they did the water was either scorching or freezing. So for the entire stay none of us managed to have a decent shower. The sofa also kept collapsing, which we had to fix ourselves. The DVD player didn't work, and despite being told it would be replaced repeatedly, it never was (Tim did offer us a free night in return for the DVD player, but ultimately it was more the frustration of being told it would be fixed that was annoying. We did not take the free night). There was no check out procedure stated, so we were unsure of where to leave the keys etc.
Ultimately I have stayed in a lot of Air B'n'Bs, and normally problems get resolved very quickly, but in this instance they were not. The apartment is beautiful, and the location is great, but I don't know if I would recommend it based on my experience.
My family and I had a pleasant stay in Tim's Changle Loft apartment. It is easy to go to line 1/10 and the location itself is very convenient to access anywhere.
I do appreciate Victoria allow the flexibilty for early check in and late check out for me. :)
Minutes away from the popular shopping neighborhood. and metro stations, the location of Tim's loft is very convenient. Tim's helper, Victoria, assisted our checked in process upon our arrival. Although our flight was terribly delayed until 1am, she stayed at the loft until we were settled in. However, the hot water did not work appropriately during our stay. The water went back and forth from arctic zero to volcanic steam within seconds. My husband and I took showers for around 2 minutes per day, and when we needed to shampoo, we went to my parents' house for a proper shower. The shower problem made our trip a bit uneasy. We communicated with Victoria about this and tried to resolve the problem but attempts were futile. All in all, it was a pleasant stay at Tim's loft, but I feel reluctant to book this place again.

About the Host, Tim
I'm open minded and easy going. Born and raised close to Dusseldorf in Germany, I have lived in Berlin, Shanghai and Cape Town before setting up my base in Shanghai in 2011. Since 2015 I'm calling Hong Kong my home away from home.
I renovated and/or redecorated some beautiful homes in Shanghai's former French-Concession and look forward hosting guests from all around the world to share my favorite spots in this mega metropolis!
I like the urban lifestyle with its convenience and culture but love frequent escape to the outdoors, adventurous travel, diving and simple life off the beaten track. Besides travelling, I'm passionate about third wave coffee and healthy food, photography & design, fitness and gathering with friends and interesting people.
I'm curious and try to meet guests personally, however if you are arriving when I'm out of town (Yay, I'm a frequent traveller) my helping hand Victoria will make sure you have a smooth check-in and worry-free stay.
Life is a journey.
