Medieval Watchtower near Florence

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Via Roma, Bagno a Ripoli, Tuscany 50012, Italy

The Space

This 12th tower apartment is the "hat" of a mansion in the hills south east of Florence, Italy.
It includes 2 bedrooms, a kitchenette, a living area and large bathroom with bathtub and separate shower. And the tower terrace, of course, with its 360 degree view!
There are stairs and more stairs to get to the tower apartment, but that is what makes it so private, romantic and panoramic.
There is WIFI, and toys and books in English too.
As mentioned on some of the reviews, this place is also CHILD FRIENDLY: toys, books, safe private gardens, a magical tower, friendly cats (optional!), babysitter available on the premises.
Also special CHILD FRIENDLY COOKING CLASS available. (See "additional offers" further below).

The estate includes one shaded and one sunny garden, and a small olive grove shared with the other families in the building.

The tower portion dates back to 1146. The rest of the building was added on in the 1400s , 1600s and 1800s. Many lives were saved during WWII by my grandfather who risked his own, by offering hiding and shelter to total strangers in this villa. We want to continue this tradition by welcoming people from all over the world. Our children are the 6th generation in this home.

Guest Access

WIFI, use of washing machine, DVD player. Also, ADDITIONAL OFFERS AT THE TOWER:

If you are planning a quiet evening in the tower but do not feel like cooking (or plan to return from your sightseeing right at dinner-time), we can prepare an all Tuscan simple but complete dinner to await you when you return, including wine and dessert. Cost: 20€ per person, 2 people minimum. Children 15€ each (if they don’t drink wine!). Children under 5, free

2) Take a fun hands-on COOKING LESSON where you learn how to make pasta from scratch.
Time is flexible, we like to adjust to your schedule when possible.

That comes in 3 options:

A) take the 2–hour class and walk upstairs to your own private kitchenette with your freshly made pastas, as well as 2 freshly made sauces to dress them with. Make your own dinner with your hand-made creations!
50€, for 2 people. 25€ for every additional person.

B) take the 2–hour class, and walk to your tower dining room with all of the above, plus wine, bruschetta, frittata or quiche and home-made dessert.
40€ per person.

C) - All of the above, consumed here on the premises (downstairs from the tower, same building. You can come in your slippers if you'd like!). The bonus: beautiful views, unlimited toppings of wine, and coffee. And you don’t have to do the dishes! Cost per person: 50€

Also, FAST WIFI, free parking, DVD movies (lots of choices!) BBQ in the common garden, cooking class, village with food supplies out the driveway.

Interaction with Guests

We live in the building, right at your doorstep! You have all the privacy (the tower apartment is all for you, with private entrance, bathroom and kitchen etc) but we are a knock away if you need help, wish to borrow some food, or are simply in the mood to share a glass of wine or cup of tea or coffee with us, and hear the story of this place.

The Neighborhood

Local deli, freshly baked bread, cheeses, wine, great cappuccino and top butcher of the valley all right across the street, 5 minutes walk.
No restaurant walking distance, but you can buy all the food you need to make your own meals. Very nice family stile trattoria only 5 minutes driving from home.

Getting around

20 minutes drive to Florence, or 45 minutes by bus. Use of car not necessary if you are planning to just visit Florence during the day and simply relax and enjoy the countryside, but highly recommended for evening outings and explorations of Tuscany.
Bus schedule available here at the apartment, as part of our detailed "homeguide".

  • Our group had an absolutely lovely stay here at the watchtower. We had a mixup with dates and arrived a day earlier than we had booked - oops! Majla was wonderful and worked out a way for us to stay earlier. The tower is gorgeous, and the perfect way to experience Tuscany. Our hosts really made us feel at home, even preparing a meal for us one of the evenings! Our group also loved the two cats that dropped by from time to time. Overall we HIGHLY recommend! You won't regret

  • My boyfriend and I stayed at the tower apartment for two nights in early January 2014. We really enjoyed our stay and were excited to learn about the history of the tower. The apartment is very spacious and the full kitchen (stove, microwave, large refrigerator, espresso machine, etc.) allowed us to cook meals there and further enjoy the experience. The terrace on the roof of the tower provides beatiful views and is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings (provided it isn't raining, as was our experience). I will certainly be visiting again!

  • We are total eight people staying in the watchtower for four nights. I was first attracted by this unique building, you can feel the historic atmosphere once you entered, it's a very special experience to live there. It's located 15km from center of Florence but it's easy to get there by driving 15mins or by public transport.

Majla and her husband are great host, we met when we arrived and have good communication via phone during our stay. Nevertheless the dinner they made for us, it's fantastic local taste which you can't taste in restaurant, especially the tiramisu, it was the most delicious tiramisu I ever have in my lifetime!!!

  • the best experience we had in italy was staying in the watchtower.
the hosts are great - they are ready to help with whatever you need, and wont bother you if you just want to enjoy your time here.
we felt at home almost immediately - and what a home it is!
the view from your private rooftop is amazing. we tried to have as many lunches as we could up there.
the apartment has everything you need, and more, filled with lots of small beautiful items.
the town is very quiet with nice walking hikes you can do, and has a few shops to get you by.
florence is 15 minutes away by car.

we left happy and envious of the children that grew up there!

  • The Medieval watchtower apt was such an amazing place to stay! Beautiful views, a perfect location to explore Tuscany, and some furry bonuses if you like cats! We had dinner the night we arrived at the watchtower and Marco made us the best meal of our entire trip. This is an amazing place to stay, highly recommended!

  • Majla and her husband were very friendly and helpful hosts and welcomed us with a bottle of Prosecco.
What a great and warm welcome!
    Their home is absolutely extraordinary!
The tower is a wonderful place with a great view, even the dome of Florence is visible. It`s a challenge to enter the top of the tower, but it`s fun.
In San Donato you can buy good food (try the grocery).
    Highly recommended!

  • A truly wonderful place to stay and Majla was an excellent host! The pasta making was one of the highlights of our two week honeymoon. Thank you so much - we loved it!

  • AMAZING!!!!! We had a delightful 4 night stay at the watchtower. Majla and Marco were very hospitable and gracious hosts. The apartment has such character and everything you need. We used it as a base to drive to Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano and Florence. At the end of each day it was like coming back to your own home.

I HIGHLY recommend taking up the offer of dinner prepared by Majla and Marco. We did this on our last night and it was fantastic!

Thanks for a great opportunity and sharing your kindness.

  • We loved staying in Majla's Watchtower. We also rented her studio at the same time and it provided the perfect amount of space and privacy for our group of four. The views cannot be beat. Majla was a wondeful, accomodating host. Do the cooking class with Majla and Marco - it's fantastic!! Highly recommend.

My children are the 6th generation in this medieval villa, and when our budget doesn't allow us to travel, we like a little bit of the world to come to us. My grandfather - a personal hero of mine - hid and saved many lives (often complete strangers, and foreigners), from the fury of the Fascists and Nazis during WW2, in the many nooks and crannies of this old home; and this has created in his heirs a tradition of opening this home to strangers. I am more hospitable than impeccable... One of my favourite quotes is: "if you don't believe in connections, you miss them". I recently wrote a book about happiness. My husband Marco is a retired professional yachtsman, and now a talented and passionate cook.
