The space
Everything about this cottage says "someone cares". You'll get it as soon as you come through the gate ... it sits on a big double lot, nicely landscaped with grass, hedges and flowers. And the cottage itself? It's, well, sweet! And almost all new.

(If you are mobility impaired, please see the note at the end of this section.).

THE SUN ROOM: The home was one-story until we built a covered sun room with an almost 360-degree view of the lake and volcano. There's a futon/pull-down couch (no linen), plus chairs and a small table. We love to eat, read, or just visit with friends up there!

THE LIVING AREAS: The living room is spacious and comfortable, with a desk if you want to work and Bose speakers you can connect to your device.

THE BEDROOM: The new double bed with pillow top is in a separate room at the end of the living room. It's wonderfully sunny with windows all around and curtains for evening privacy and great sleeping. The steps to the sun room are here too, so you don't need to go outside.

THE KITCHEN: If you like to cook with quality items, you'll love the kitchen. It's a small enough space that you just need to turn around to get what you need. It also has ample counter space, a new oven, and a good-size fridge. We even installed a silent water pump outside to get great water pressure in the kitchen (a rarity in San Pedro).

PEACE & QUIET: We're in one of the quietest sections of San Pedro -- you will almost never hear a vehicle, and there's only the occasional music. There are street dogs in San Pedro that occasionally disrupt the peace ... but not for long.

SAFETY: San Pedro La Laguna is rated as very safe. Tourists can walk freely without fear, even at night. This might be due to the extensive security system they have in place -- or it could be the awesome residents who don't put up with crime. We have lighted security cameras on the path outside the cottage to be sure kids don't spray graffiti on the cottage.

THE BACK STORY: This cottage is a labor of love between the owner, a Mayan with a wife and two young children, and a semi-retired creative writer.

They both loved the house, so they struck a deal: she would rent it and, with his help, would renovate the house to create a B&B which he could then manage, sharing any profit.

All this to say that you'll feel at home because we worked together to make a space that feels good ... a cottage we hope you'll fall in love with!

THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY: The Mayans at Lake Atitlan don't have a lot of opportunity -- this is our attempt to help create some. Please join us by renting our sweet cottage!

Here's a review from our first guests in 12-23 (they used another channel for booking):

We spent 5 nights here and the stay was absolutely perfect! The location is very quiet and the lake can be reached in 2 minutes on foot.

On our arrival we were picked up by Armando at the front on the street and guided to the house. Armando and Mary Helen are very helpful and always available for questions. In addition, Armando is also a local guide and likes to accompany you on tours in the region (we did the Sunrise-Hike with him).

The cottage is very nice, lovingly and stylishly furnished and offers a lot of comfort. The kitchen facilities are excellent and upon arrival there were already fruits, orange juice, bread and a few more food items ready for us. Also some spices and some ingredients for cooking and baking are available.

There is a large garden all around the house for sole use, which offers a lot of privacy.

We would absolutely recommend the accommodation and would book it again anytime immediately. Thank you Armando and Mary Helen!

Guest access
You'll have access to all parts of the space.

Other things to note
The cottage sits on the corner of two dirt paths -- one which goes from the main Finca road to the lake, and the other runs parallel to the lake from the Community Spanish School, past us, and up to the Mikaso Hotel with El Gato Perdido Restaurant. Please note that the dirt paths are not appropriate for people who have impaired mobility (difficulty walking).

All of the cottage windows on those paths are tinted so you can see out of the cottage but no passerby can see in -- during the day, that is. At night we suggest you close the curtains downstairs for total privacy. (The sun room is well above everyone in sight and only has curtains to protect from sun in the daytime. Who would want to block that view?!).

FINAL NOTE: As we say above, the cottage is not for mobility-impaired persons. It is about 100 yards along a dirt path towards the lake, some of which is a bit rocky.

Where you’ll be

San Pedro La Laguna, Sololá Department, Guatemala

This is a super peaceful space. A very short walk to town, but away from the noise of the "tuc tucs" (taxis) and nightlife.

Walk up the path to the main street and hail a 'tuc tuc' taxi or simply walk up to the mercado (local market) ... or visit the tourist part of town. It's all nearby but not on top of you.

Our home is near everything you could want -- steps to the lake and beach, and walking distance to restaurants, bars, and Spanish schools...

Not to mention the San Pedro volcano which is practically in our back yard!
