This is a private, daylight basement apartment in our 1910 Craftsman home. It's roomy, super-clean, w/ everything you'll need to be comfortable for a weekend, or a month! Walk to 40 restaurants, coffee shops, and a grocery store just one block away.
Recently remodeled apartment with separate entrance. This updated daylight basement comes complete with living area, full kitchen, bathroom with double sinks, and a quiet bedroom.
We just splurged on a new queen-sized "Heavenly Bed"-- the same kind they brag about in Westin Hotels! with all new 100% cotton bedding, and the entire apartment is spotlessly clean and comfortable-- warm in winter, cool in summer.
The bedroom is super quiet and made for comfort. There's a luggage rack for your suitcase, a full closet and dresser for your use. The bathroom has double sinks, a new set of plush cotton towels, and a full shower-tub combination. We supply hand soap, a hair dryer, and we usually have a good supply of "extras," like small shampoo bottles, a razor, etc, in case you forget anything essential.
This spacious private apartment has almost 900 square feet, including a cozy sitting area with TV/cable, streaming Netflix + wireless high-speed wifi. You can do laundry, shop at nearby markets (New Seasons or Fred Meyer's) and cook a meal in the fully-equipped kitchen.
You'll be just three blocks from the center of the Hawthorne District-- endless restaurant options, vintage clothing stores, Powell's Books, the Baghdad Theater, and more. Three blocks to the north you will find Belmont Street, with vegan food, Indian and Lebanese restuaurants, pizza and Stumptown Coffee. Keep walking past Belmont and you can stroll through magnificent Laurelhurst Park.
Several bus lines serve the neighborhood, with most bus stops just 2-3 blocks away. The MAX Light Rail + bus brings you here from the airport-- no need to rent a car, if you don't want to. ZipCar members will find several cars nearby; our neighborhood has been rated a "walker's paradise." If you are driving, there's plenty of on-street parking on our block.
On warm days, you can hang out in the backyard. We're within quick access of Reed College (8 min. by car), downtown Portland (easy bus ride). We've lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and know the city extremely well. We have guidebooks and helpful information on hand.
Note: The ceiling of this daylight basement easily accommodates anyone up to 6'3"-- however there are a couple of hallways/doorways that are around 6'0", so extra-tall folks might want to take extra care while staying here. The apartment is not child safe; sorry we cannot accommodate families with children.
Washer/dryer located in apartment, with laundry soap on site. Parking in front of our house.
We typically greet guests and give them a short tour of the apartment. We're available for questions about the amenities, or about visiting Portland. Otherwise we don't expect to interact frequently, since guests have a private entrance. We do try and see each guest before they leave, however.
The Hawthorne District is home to the famous Bagdad Theater, where you can eat pizza and drink beer while watching a movie, concert or other show. There are tons of wonderful restaurants and at least 3 music venues nearby. We're also three blocks from SE Belmont, with more great options for dining, including a classic portland food cart pod.
You can use the MAX train (light rail from airport) to transfer to a bus that leaves you just a block from our house. Many bus lines nearby that bring you quickly to downtown Portland, etc.
We try to be considerate of our neighbors, so there's no need to slam the door while coming or going. We'd appreciate your keeping voices low when coming home late at night, as our neighbors' windows are close by your apartment entrance.
We typically greet guests and provide an overview of the apartment, as well as the neighborhood and transportation options. Then we leave our guests on their own, although we are always available to answer any questions that may come up. For those who are considering moving to Portland, or just want to know more about the city, we're available for a longer conversation, if requested.
Interaction with Guests
Upon arrival and departure, and of course we're available if you have questions.
Many bus lines nearby-- #75 up and down Cesar Chavez (connects to MAX for airport transfer).
Bus lines on Hawthorne and Belmont take you downtown.
No smoking. No pets. Minimum stay three nights.
No additional party guests.
We consider longer-term stays, case by case.
We had a great stay in Thalia's basement apartment. Clean, spacious, and fresh. Thalia was extremely welcoming and available for anything we might need. Would stay here again!
Hosts responded quickly to our emails and texts.
Thalia was easy to communicate with, friendly and helpful in her responses.
Space was as described and comfortable.
Lots of flowering trees all around the neighborhood.
Neighborhood very walkable with lots of places to eat and drink.
Laurelhurst park is nearby and wonderful.
I stayed for 5 nights and had an excellent experience! So much better than a hotel. Thalia was very responsive and helpful from the beginning of my request all the way through my stay. She and her husband met me upon my arrival to show me the space, and then gave me my privacy, but always easily and quickly reachable by text. The space is clean, roomy and comfortable, well laid out. The kitchen and bathrooms are both well stocked and the apartment offers laundry in the space as well. Very comfortable bed and nice linens. Parking is all street, but I never had trouble finding a spot almost right in front of the house, even late at night. Neighborhood is safe and walkable to lots of restaurants, a grocery store and public transportation. There are definitely one or two low ceiling spots, so if you're a taller guy or gal, might require some ducking!
Our host contacted us as soon as we made the reservation with welcoming thoughts and asking a few questions about our trip which allowed them to provide even more help and information about the apartment and area. They contacted us again a day before the trip telling us specifically how to locate and get into the apartment.
The apartment was set comfortably with everything we would need during a stay, many things we hadn't even thought about being available, i.e., some extra bathroom items, and kitchen essentials.
The washer and dryer was a nice convenience.
The host contacted us concerning needs a couple times during the stay, which made us feel welcome to ask them for any needs or information about the area.
The apartment was handy to church and shopping essentials and the host made sure we knew how to get to those places.
Finally, we were happy to find that parking was always available somewhere on that block.
This was a clean, handy, well-stocked apartment; and we highly recommend it to other travelers.
Staying here was one of the best experiences I've had on my travels. Thalia is great at responding to messages. She also provides so much additional information about things to do in Portland as well as best transportation options. I like that she greets on arrival and departure. She makes herself available for any help throughout the trip. The location is in the perfect neighborhood. The place is super cozy and it has everything you would need and more. I definitely plan on staying here again when I come back to Portland.
Thalia was amazing and she fully deserves the title of Super Host. She was very friendly and welcoming. We "checked in" and she walked us through everything we needed to know about the place (exactly what was stated online). Linens were provided which was nice and she was very helpful. She is also very easy to reach which makes everything a bit easier. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Thalia & Mike are very friendly & nice. They made me feel right at home. Thalia would check with me every now and then to see if I needed anything. The apt. is very cozy and comfortable, with a
fabulous bed. It is located in a safe area. Very convenient to a grocery store, a bank, Walgreens ,parks and many restaurants & shops on
My husband Mike and I are homeowners in Portland, Oregon.
I have traveled extensively worldwide and published a couple of travel books a few years ago. For most of my life I have done political work full-time-- for the past several years I have been working to legalize marriage for same-sex couples in the United States.
Mike works in a school, enjoys motorcycle road trips, and together we have traveled to Spain, Greece, Morocco, Mexico, as well as other places.
