The Space

Recently remodeled apartment with private entrance in our wonderful 1910 Portland home! Your private entrance leads you to an updated daylight basement complete with living area, full kitchen, bathroom with double sinks, and a quiet bedroom.

We just splurged on a new queen-sized "Heavenly Bed"-- the same kind they brag about in Westin Hotels! with all new bedding, and the entire apartment is spotlessly clean and comfortable-- warm in winter, cool in summer.

The bedroom is super quiet and made for comfort. There's a luggage rack for your suitcase, a full closet and dresser for your use. The bathroom has double sinks, a new set of plush cotton towels, and a full shower-tub combination.

This spacious private apartment has almost 800 square feet, including a cozy sitting area with TV/cable, streaming Netflix + wireless high-speed wifi. You can do laundry, shop at nearby markets (New Seasons or Fred Meyer's) and cook a meal in the fully-equipped kitchen.

You'll be just three blocks from the center of the Hawthorne District-- endless restaurant options, vintage clothing stores, Powell's Books, the Baghdad Theater, and more. Three blocks to the north you will find Belmont Street, with vegan food, Indian and Lebanese restuarants, pizza and Stumptown Coffee. Keep walking and you can stroll through magnificent Laurelhurst Park.

Several bus lines serve the neighborhood, with most bus stops just 2-3 blocks away. The MAX Light Rail + bus brings you here from the airport-- no need to rent a car, if you don't want to. ZipCar members will find several cars nearby; our neighborhood has been rated a "walker's paradise." If you are driving, there's plenty of on-street parking on our block.

On warm days, you can hang out in the backyard. We're within quick access of Reed College (8 min. by car), downtown Portland (easy bus ride). We know the neighborhood-- and city-- extremely well, and we have guidebooks and helpful information on hand.

Note: The ceiling of this daylight basement easily accommodates anyone up to 6'3"-- there are a couple of hallways/doorways that are 6'1", so extra-tall folks might want to take extra care while staying here.

Interaction with Guests

We typically greet guests and give them a short tour. We're available for questions about the apartment or about visiting Portland. Otherwise we don't expect to interact frequently, since guests have a private entrance. We do try and see each guest before they leave, however.

  • This apartment was the perfect place for us to stay for 4 nights so that we could visit our daughter who is living 5 or 6 blocks away. There is a nice park close by where we walked and the grocery store and pharmacy are close. The hosts were very helpful if you needed them and the apartment was quite nice with everything you could need. It was our first time using airbnb and so the experience was very satisfying.

  • My boyfriend and I just returned home from our trip, spending three days in Portland. Thalia and her place are wonderful! She met us shortly after we arrived and gave us some tips for places to eat/ things to do. The apartment is SPECTACULAR and the bed is super comfy. There is so much space--a living room and kitchen are great to have (we never used the kitchen, since Portland has so many great restaurants!). The best part of the apartment, though, is the neighborhood--really close to a few bus lines and within walking distance to some really great places in Southeast. I would book the apartment again in a heartbeat on my next trip to Portland. You can't beat this place!

  • Thalia's apartment was true to the description--clean, cozy, and close to everything you could possibly need! Multiple bus stops around the corner and down the street, so using public transport was a breeze. Will definitely return to this place next time we're in Portland!

  • Thalia was a great host and was very accommodating. This basement apartment has all the essentials we needed -- we even had use of the laundry machine! The bed was also incredibly comfortable, got some great sleep after long days/evenings on our bikes. The location of this apartment is absolutely perfect, just around the corner from Hawthorne st and Belmont st with amazing coffee shops, restaurants, and quirky places to shop. Thank you Thalia! We will definitely come back to you when we visit Portland again!

  • I could not have asked for a better airbnb experience! I booked Thalia's charming apartment as a place to land when I relocated from the East Coast. The apartment had every amenity I needed to start my life here in Portland and serve as a home base while I looked for a place to live long term. It was comfortable, quiet and convenient.

Most importantly, however, it had incredibly caring, helpful and generous hosts in Thalia and Mike. I immediately had a friend and advocate in Thalia for all things Portland and beyond. Whether you're vacationing in Portland or transitioning as I did, I recommend booking with Thalia and Mike without hesitation.

  • What a wonderful place to stay! Very large space, cozy furniture, everything you need in the kitchen and bathroom to make yourself feel at home. Extremely clean and well stocked with local books, magazines and maps. The bed is SO COMFORTABLE. One thing with AirBNB accommodation is sometimes the beds are just ok or it's a foldout. But this was hotel quality firmness and comfort. So worth it for the price! Parking is easy enough to find on the street and the neighbourhood is very cute. Awesome vintage stores, cool bars and restaurants, Fred Meyer and New Seasons market (like Whole Foods) and soon to open Blue Star donuts are just outside your door. Thalia and Mike were wonderful, welcoming hosts. Friendly and pleasant to chat with. There are only a few extra things that I would note about this place: 1) If you are tall it may be uncomfortable. It is a basement suite with low/dropped ceilings in many parts. We are 5'6" and it was fine for us though. 2) It is not very soundproof. But again, not a problem for us as we would be out all day and just home for a rest and then to bed (oh wonderful bed!). Plus our hosts were not noisy at all, just something to note. I would have felt bad turning up the TV too loud at night to disturb them but we were so exhausted from our days exploring the city we didn't even get a chance to turn it on! 3) My husband likes a hot shower and the water temperature didn't quite get up there enough for him. Matter of preference though. Would definitely stay here again. Strongly recommend this accommodation!

  • We had a great stay at Thalia's apartment! It was very clean and cozy, and stocked with everything we needed. Thalia provided lots of useful info on the Portland area. The apartment is located in a great area of the city, with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and shops within a few blocks. It was easy to park on the street and the keypad lock made it easy to access. I would highly recommend it!

  • I couldn't have asked for better accommodations. The apartment was perfect. Great condition, spacious, clean, perfect location within walking distance of everything one could need. The weather was terrible yet the apt was cozy as could be. I hope to be back soon.
