The Space

Ruang Tawan Hideaway is a beautiful and unique guest house/hotel with three cottages and a Moroccan style building containing two rooms. All set amid a lumyai orchard; each cottage/room is individually designed and lavishly decorated with antiques. The cottages also have Bali-style bathrooms and indoor and outdoor seating areas, which allow you to truly enjoy your surroundings. The main reception/lounge area, bar and restaurant is completely open and built around large antique teak pillars; Ruang Tawan is the perfect place to relax for a few days yet is still only 15 minutes from town.

The Yellow house is extremely spacious with a mezzanine floor overlooking the garden, a gorgeous Balinese style bathroom with an oval shape bath tub and an under cover seating area at the front terrace of the cottage over looking the garden. The Yellow house can sleep up to 4 people, 2 on the upper floor and 2 on the ground floor. There is a fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary mineral water and ceiling fans. The stated price is for the cottage and 2 guests (inc. breakfast), each additional guest is 500B pp.

Free wifi is available in the lounge/bar area and transfers to and from town and the airport are available for a small fee. Breakfast is included and other meals are available on request. Parking is available onsite. We pride ourselves on the relaxed and friendly atmosphere here and we can help recommend and book any trips/activities you are interested in around the area.

Ruang Tawan Hideaway is a place like no other, it is colourful, spacious, friendly and peaceful; the perfect place to recharge your batteries! Whether you'd like to stay at home in this serene orchard, relax with a massage and some of our exquisite food, made using home-grown or locally sourced produce, or head out to see what the area has to offer, we are ideally situated. We speak fluent English and Thai and are looking forward to help you enjoy a unique holiday whilst staying in a home from home.

  • We had a great 13-day stay at the Hideaway. We booked the Yellow House which was nice but ended up staying in the Morocco House instead because it was better insulated against the unusually cold winter in Chiang Mai.

Paul & Ja, the hosts, were very hospitable and the many dogs were cute and surprisingly non-noisy!

Breakfast was great, as were the cakes and coffee in the My Secret Cafe place right next door.

The gardens and grounds were beautiful and the overall atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing.

As mentioned by a few others already, this place is a good 20 minute out of town so you'd need a car, or to use the taxis arranged by the host.

  • Stayed here in the yellow house for 3 nights with a couple of friends. Raluque and Paul were very hospitable hosts, picked us up from the airport and were super helpful to coordinate activities for us in Chiang Mai. The location is a bit outside of downtown Chiang Mai, but if you are looking for a very unique experience while you're in Thailand I would highly recommend this spot. The grounds are beautiful and the main lobby has a wonderful/exotic ambiance.

  • Loved staying at this place! It was like our own private hideaway! Raluque was super helpful in getting us anything we needed and getting us directions. This place is going to be a 5-star resort sometime soon!

  • Great place to relax and unwind, Ja and Paul are so friendly and helpful with arranging transport in and around Chiang Mai. Be sure to eat at the 'Secret Cafe' at least once during your stay.

  • If you are looking for a relaxing, unique oasis with really gracious hosts, look no further. I had the pleasure of staying at Ja and Paul's amazing Hideaway from November 17th through the 24th. I did not want to leave. The photos don't do the place justice or show the very charming common area. Our hosts were always willing to help in any way they could, from making arrangements for day tours, calling taxis for us, translating or writing out directions in Thai and even inviting us to Paul's birthday dinner on our final night there.

We stayed in Fez house our first night and switched to the Yellow House for the remainder of our stay. Both are excellent choices with their own distinct charm. I imagine there isn't a bad selection among any of the cottages there.

Breakfast was available in the morning and it was far better than any hotel option. Fresh fruit, wonderful croissants, cereal, as much coffee or tea as we wanted as well as fresh juice. All served by the lovely staff or sometimes Ja or Paul. We even made friends with a few folks over leisurely mornings. The place seems made to bring people together and chill them out.

It is worth noting that he Hideaway is a decent trek out of town, about 20 minutes by car. I didn't mind it, but if you're looking for something in the heart of the action, this place may not work for you. I also had Ja write out the address in Thai and once or twice we had to have drivers call for directions. Again, no big deal for us but it's worth keeping in mind.

I can't say enough good things about this little gem. I would gladly stay here on my next trip to Chiang Mai and I can't recommend it highly enough. What a great first impression of Thai hospitality!

Thank you, Ja and Paul!! Miss the place already. Give the dogs a pet for me!

  • This place is like a slice of heaven! Without a doubt the best place I've ever stayed at. I would give The Hideaway 6 stars! Away from the city but not too far, especially if you plan on doing some things north of Chiang mai. The grounds are beautifully manicured, the common lodge is out of this world beautiful and comfortable, so easy to loose an afternoon lounging around. They (email hidden) in there fully stocked. Jaa and Paul could not have been more friendly and helpful. They helped us plan the rest of our trip, gave us recommendations around the local town and we had numerous good conversations. We asked about massages and they had a lady come to us who was fair I price and had amazing touch!! Breakfast was very good with fresh fruit, strong coffee and the most delightful croissants! We had dinner at the Hideaway one night, they made a few different local dishes so we could sample a little of each. Also, there is a good restaurant across the street if you don't feel like going all the way into town. Jaa also has a secret cafe on the grounds for lunch if you feel like sticking around. I could not recommend this place highly enough and we will be back for sure!

  • We stayed at Ruang Tawan hotel during our honeymoon and we absolutely loved the place! The place was beautifully decorated and overall we really enjoyed Ja and Paul's hospitality and outstanding service. Ja and Paul were super friendly and accommodating. They went out their way to book great events and activities for us to enjoy. What a lovely couple! I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Chiang Mai and stay there again without a question. Absolutely amazing and loved it!

  • That was fantastic. The buildings are beautiful and well decorated, the place is full of trees and nature symphony, the food is just delicious. Last but not least, Jaa and Paul were so friendly! Simply the best hosts I had in Thailand.
I stayed there longer than I planned at first and in the end I would spend most of my Chiang Mai time just hanging out there and appreciating the lovely environment.

  • We stayed with Jaa and Paul for 2 weeks in July, and it was one of the highlights of our trip through Southeast Asia. The grounds are lovely, the bungalows are beautiful, and breakfast and dinner is delicious. The location is great, too; enough outside of town to feel like a country retreat, but an easy 20 minutes to get to the heart of the city. But more importantly they went above and beyond to help us enjoy are stay, from assisting us with travel arrangements to giving us tips on the best things to do in Chiang Mai. We certainly will be back again!

Ruang Tawan Hideaway, My Secret Cafe
I'm from Bangkok and went to school in England. I have a degree in ceramics but my true passion is cooking, especially baking! I went on a cooking course in Ballymaloe near Cork, Ireland a few years ago and now I have my own cafe in Chiang Mai. I love eating out, music and films.
