* Hello, I have provided a very detailed description below and photos above. I hope you find the information useful and It will help you plan your trip. Would you like to visit? Please share: Estimated Arrival time & what brings you to the city.
The room is exactly as you see it in the picture. I joke that it is the "merengue room" because I have a young half deaf "special" neighbor downstairs and he plays music very loud and you will definitely hear his merengue. Laughing? Good, I got your attention with my humor and low price that will help you save money on your trip to New York City.
So this is your trade off: Save a lot more money but be ready to use the free ear plugs I provide. Hopefully you will come home from seeing all the sights and attractions from New York City that you'll sleep through any loud neighbor (hey this is New York and we live in apartments with paper thin walls, you might rent another more expensive apartment and get another "deaf" neighbor playing rap/rock n' roll, etc. I've stayed at 4 star hotels with noisy neighbors and paid $300/night.)
Location: Inwood/Washington Heights near 200th Street and Broadway at the Northern tip of Manhattan. Inwood Hill Park and Fort Tryon Park with the Cloisters Museum are nearby. There are 2 subway/metro lines just 2 city blocks from the apartment: "A" express and "1" local trains that take you to midtown Manhattan in 30 to 45 minutes. Subway/train fare is $2.50 per ride anywhere in the city. The subway is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. To better plan your trip, you can use a search engine or hopstop to calculate your estimated travel times to your specific downtown destinations. Once you book, Airbnb gives you the specific address/my contact information and I provide you with directions to my place.
If you book my listing you can expect the following:
-a bedroom in a 3 story walk-up (no elevator)
-1 key to enter the apartment and 1 key to lock your room
-a futon bed that sleeps two people
-towels and linens for your futon
-a rack with hangers for your belongings
You will also have access/share these:
Local Area pluses:
-a local commercial strip with supermarkets (including a 24 hour supermarket), Starbucks Coffee, laundromat, dry cleaners, restaurants, pharmacies, department stores, bars (including a new Gay Bar).
-most things costs less in my neighborhood than they would in midtown (you can save a lot in meals and groceries)
-Safety: the room is located near a commercial district in a working class neighborhood, you always have people around you even late at night making it safe at all times
Here are final things to consider before you book:
1. The listing is for 1 room in the apartment, NOT an entire studio or apartment for yourselves. I have two other private rooms listed on airbnb. This means that if the other rooms are booked the kitchen and bath are shared (with 1-3 people...students, professionals, artists on sabatical and fellow travelers).
2. As you have read in my listing the apartment is in a working class neighborhood. It is culturally and racially diverse.
3. Many of my neighbors speak English with an accent and most are 1st and 2nd generation Spanish speaking immigrants who still prepare most of their meals at home (you may smell what is cooking, lol) and some of my young neighbors play music loudly--earplugs available ;)
4. The building is over 100 years old and 5 stories tall...So if you are looking for a modern skyscraper building..this is not it.
5. But, most importantly, especially in the summer and as our NYC days warm up; in Spanish cultures, it is traditional for families to spent hot days outdoors in portable chairs. Some people are not accustomed to returning home and seeing literally 100 people on the sidewalk: children playing, older men playing dominoes, grandmothers gossiping, teenagers walking around, etc. One benefit is that you feel safe with so many people on the street.
Pricing: So, you can save money by booking really far away from the city in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, New Jersey ($25-$50) or spend a lot more money booking a listing in midtown or just book my room as a nice compromise between cost, distance and convenience. If you look hard, you may find a hostel for under $50 but you end up sharing a room with 5 or 10 people with absolutely no privacy, while booking my room means YOU SHARE YOUR ROOM WITH NO ONE (note: you obviously share the kitchen and bathroom).
I don't ask for references, resume, school grades, financial statements, security deposits, etc. You'll get your own key, there are no curfews or rules other than common courtesy. I don't discriminate by sex, age, or race-- just don't destroy my place. As your host, I will make sure you get any information you need to enjoy your trip, and that your stay is comfortable!
**Dear European travelers, I will be traveling to Europe soon (using AirBnB) and would love to save money for myself and you by exchanging dollars for euros to avoid all those fees that exchange companies charge at the airport. Notify me if interested**

All that said, I have welcomed dozens and dozens of happy travelers and I will be happy to meet you!
My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Rosa's! We stayed in the Merengue room but actually did NOT hear any music or have any disturbances at all from neighboring apartments or even from outside. I slept very well. We were staying here waiting for our apartment lease to come through and Rosa made us feel like we had a home while we were between homes.
The room, and actually the whole apartment, was super clean. The room was furnished with a bed, desk, reading lamp, and a couple of racks / storage areas for clothes - just the right amount of stuff to be comfortable and not cluttered. It was also large. Rosa provided towels and also had a comfy blanket stored away for cold nights. The wifi was fast and reliable.
The bathroom was very clean, with good water pressure. The kitchen was well-stocked with basics (pots, pans, mugs, salt and pepper) that would make it easy to cook if you wanted to. The apartment is also convenient to shops and cheap restaurants (Cachapas y Mas Venezuelan - yum!)
A couple of other guests were staying in the other rooms while we were there - they were super nice, and the apartment is set up so that you don't really disturb or even see each other except in the kitchen. You can also lock your bedroom door with a key when you go out or from the inside when you are in the room.
Rosa left good information about the city and the house / check-out procedures in the kitchen. I spoke with her a time or two and she is really nice - told me interesting history of the area and the buildings. She was also very responsive in booking and easy to communicate with when we asked her questions. She seems reliable and I get the impression she really takes care of the place and values her guests' experience at her property.
This was a wonderful place to stay! We couldn't have asked for a better value, more comfortable place in northern Manhattan. Thanks Rosa!
I stayed in Rosa's apartment for 10 days and had an amazing time in NYC.
Everything is as Rosa has described and she makes sure that you are aware of all of the features of the apartment and she even took me for a quick tour of the local facilities including a supermarket and laundromat across the road, lots of restaurants and you are a 5-10 min walk from 2 major Subway lines that head North/South. It took me at most including walking time 45 min to get to Mid-town - the good thing about being towards the end of the line is you get a seat at peak times!
Everything was very clean and tidy and Rosa was a friendly and accommodating host (she met me an hour earlier than scheduled at less than an hours notice!) I am a female travelling alone and I felt safe in this neighbourhood - even at 2am.
Bed - surprisingly comfy for a futon
Kitchen/Bathroom- clean with many things provided; soap, kitchen basics and some pantry items left by other guests.
Neighbourhood - safe but it could help to speak a little Spanish.
As for the noise - I quite like latin music - but there was some noise on only 2 nights out of 9. It was fine with the earplugs provided and was over well before midnight.
Overall I would highly recommend Rosa's room and would stay there again when visiting NYC.
It was our first experienced on AirBNB and it was perfect !
Rosa welcomed us and showed us the appartment and the neighborhood . She was very kind even at the last minute when we had a little issue with the bathroom curtain...
Anyway we felt like home for a week ! The neighborhood is not that loud and you have everything you need around (a supermarket open 24/7, great restaurants...).
For those who are worried for the location, the appartment is less than 5 min from 2 sybways (A express and 1) and it's about 30min to Central Park or 1h to Wall Street. But seriously, it's nothing! And we felt safe the whole time so don't hesitate and ask Rosa for your trip !
I just want to say a few good things about our stay in the Merengue Room. The place is bare bones, but it really has all that you need. We stayed for 8 nights, and in that time there were 3 other guests there over several days. Our schedules were different enough so that there were no jam ups in the kitchen/bathroom. Overall it did feel like we had the place to ourselves, though, of course, we didn't. (I travelled with my husband and young son.) We needed the earplugs on Friday night, but otherwise the neighborhood quiets down in the evenings, so, it's possible to get some rest if you need it. The building itself is a piece of old New York, very solid with high ceilings and large windows. Rosa walked us up Broadway, which is the main strip for shopping, restaurants, beautiful park, transportation, etc. You need to be "on your toes" in any NYC neighborhood, but his one has many amenities to make you wish you could stay a bit longer and explore. Since you are sharing the apartment with others, it goes without saying that you need to be considerate and clean up after yourself, and hope they do the same for you. Thanks, Rosa, for a great trip.
I needed a place last minute as I was returning to Manhattan and Rosa booked me very quickly. The apt was clean and minimal but almost too minimal as there were no warm blankets! She provided a very thin blanket for summer. She said she lives just a few blocks away and could get what we need so I emailed her to ask for a blanket as I was having difficulty sleeping from cold and loud noise from neighbors music. She said to wear more clothes to bed! Out of pure frustration I went to another room and found a blanket in a closet!
Hi all! Rest assured that winter blankets are available :D
I wish Kiki well on her move to New York city. I hope she finds a great place to live and interesting work to do. I was pleased to be able to offer her a clean room with less than 24 hours notice. I was sick in bed (not in the same apartment) and was happy to read a little e-mail from kiki complimenting my accomodation. She inquired about rates and the possibility of extending her stay for a month. I quickly informed her that I was not able to extend her stay past the agreed checkout dates but would have gladly done so had I not upcoming guests with confirmed reservations. Soon after an e-mail about with a request for additional blankets followed. I told her where to look and gave her tips on staying warm. She independently found some clean winter blankets in a closet in my apartment. Cool! In her review she comes across as high-maintenance and particular as if she expected my very-sick self to show up at the apartment bearing blankets or to personally get there immediately to go and find her blankets! To be fair, I'm sure that searching for a place to live and work in NYC within a short period of time was very stressful and possibly influenced her response On arrival she was pleasant and everything was fine when she checked-out.
We stayed for 9 nights at Rosa´s! She was a very friendly host and helped us with our questions. The room is nice with enough space!
We really enjoyed having a well equipped kitchen and a clean bathroom! Also the location is good, you can reach everything within 5 minutes by foot. The only "negative" thing was that it became a little cold during the september nights, so that the blancets weren´t warm enough! Apart from that, I would really recommand this place =)
Rosa's place is perfect! It's not far from the center and all the things you want too see in NYC. Appartment is cosy, comfortable and very clean. You can feel at home at Rosa's place, and while she is not actually living there, you can also have a lot of privacy and peace. I can highly recomend you to stay at her appartment! thanks Rosa!
Rosa is a lovely woman and is a really attentive host who looks after her guests warmly and responds extremely promptly to any issues or questions. The building is a charming old place with some nice architectural features, although the public areas need some care and a cleaning. The apartment itself is very clean and comfortable. My room was spacious and light, the bed very comfortable. The bathroom (shower works well) and kitchen are modest but very clean; in the kitchen there’s an excellent stove, a roomy refrigerator, a nice little table at which to sit. The neighbourhood is safe, friendly and very easy to get to – the subway (the A train) is two short blocks away and there are also some good bus routes. Rosa's place represents very good value and it's a good chance to see a neighbourhood you might otherwise not visit. I had only two short doses of the loud music, and it was not at night or early in the morning (but, yes, it was loud!).
Rosa is a charming host, she was immediately put at ease. We were very well received. We will return as soon as possible, and we will book again with Rosa.
Apartment very well located, close to shops, transport easily accessible: advantages that have allowed us to have a great time.
Again THANK Rosa! <3
Jessie & Benjamin ;-)
We had a great stay at Rosa's apatment! She was very nice and helpful, both with information about the city and when we wanted to extend our stay. The room was perfect for our trip, we had a table with chair and a miror, which was used often and the sofa bed was comftable and itbwas a big help that Rosa supplied us with towels and bedcover, including a wonderful duvet! I can only recommend her!
Enjoy your trip to New York
