A TEAK HOUSE in a traditional Balinese village in north Bali (turn right at Singaraja instead of left to Lovina).
Just 8 kms inland from the sea – at the foot of the mountains, and you can see the sea. You are unlikely to see another tourist (it does happen, but rarely!) No Coffee shops...
This spot is special - there is a temple to take care of us, a teak house for living in and a separate kitchen. There is a small room on the first layer and another teak house on third layer - privacy ok

The space

A little bit of HEAVEN in North Bali!
Only 20minutes drive from Singaraja.

SUNSET SALA is the name of this very special place in a traditional Balinese village of Sudaji - North Bali. Be surprised to see another westerner!

The teak house (Gladak) is 40 years old. 5metres x 4 metres plus a balcony of 2 metres wide. Sanded and transported from Java to the rice-fields of Bali. We had to build a path to get to our little bit of heaven. The views are stunning- mountains to the south and sea to the north and rice terraces and forest in front.

1 DOUBLE BED INSIDE HOUSE. And 1 BUNK BED (2SINGLES on terrace) - with nets PLUS 1 DAY BED AND 1 BENCH OUTSIDE On terrace -no nets.

Did we mention that we have uninterrupted views and the surrounds are pristine?

Terrace on three sides of the teak house allows you to either hang out on the day beds or sit in a bulky teak chairs and chat. There is water dispenser in the house. On the next layer up there is a fully equipped kitchen. You can eat at local Warungs - only a few are open for lunch but many more for dinner OR Ibu Ayu will cook Indonesian dinner at 60,000rp per person per meal. Half price for kids under 14. Please organise ahead as she goes to market in the morning.
Breakfast included in tariff- usually fresh fruit and omlette or as arranged - not traditional western breakfast.

You can't drive a car to the gladak - closest stop is the local temple about 150m away. after that its on foot or for the brave -a motorbike!

Guest access

This is a QUIET place – great for relaxing, enjoying the village and people, sight-seeing to the beach (9 km away) and the magnificent Sekempul waterfalls 15 mins away by car or motorbike. Air Saneh is 20 minutes drive east. Lovina 40 minutes drive to the west by car.
Singaraja is 15 mins to the west by car.
Menenjangan Island for snorkeling or diving (best in Bali) is 2 hours away.

Interaction with guests

I am usually not there but if i am i look forward to meeting you. Ibu Ayu looks after the house and you - and so does Pak and Ibu Mangku (priest and wife).

Other things to note

THERE IS NO WIFI and there is a computer place for printing or internet in the village.

There is a normal fridge in the kitchen so welcome to go to local market “pasar" (open 4am to 730am) and buy fresh! Enjoy the locals – of course they charge you a little more… it is still very cheap!
We have moved to normal electricity. There is no air-conditioning or fans – not needed – natural living. In fact you will often need a blanket (supplied). There are small blankets on the chairs.

The water for showers and toilets is pumped by the local priest from a water channel. There is now hot water in the shower.

BREAKFAST is included and Dinner is extra. You can go to local warungs in the village, or Lovina, or Air Saneh or Singaraja OR you can eat at home - menu to be discussed with Ibu Ayu - each meal is 60,000rp per person per meal. Children under 14 are half price. Yes I know it is more expensive than a warung but please remember this is not a restaurant and everything is bought fresh, carried to kitchen, and cooked especially for you :)

Where should we start?!? Shirley's place is just amazing... we were lucky that Shirley was there during our stay and shared her knowledge about the balinese with us. She built three beautiful little houses in the middle of paradise. The view from the veranda is breathtaking over rice terasses and palmtreeforests. During the night you can sit outside and count shooting stars. Shirley was very easy to communicate with and she also took us to a local ceremony which was an awesome experience. The house and the two Ibus provide everything you can ask for. For Wifi addicts - get an Indonesian Sim-Card beforehand for around 7€ that will provide you with Internet. We used a third cellphone as hotspot all the time and it worked just fine. Sudaji is really small and you will be in touch with the traditional bali. We really appreciated the free drinking water and Ibu Ayus food for dinner was delicious. Shirley also took us to Sekumpul waterfall which is worth a visit. Entrance is 15k per pax. If you are young and fit, you can easily do it without a guide. We decided to walk back from the waterfall to Shirley's house which took us about 1,5 hours through the villages. Really fun and a hello goes a long way with the Balinese here. If you want to get to know real Bali and have some quality time - a must stay!!! Thanks Shirley and Ibu Ayu + Ibu Mangku

This place is magnificent. Beautiful views and peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of southern Bali. The house has so much character and was very comfortable in many respects. The staff and genuinely helpful and friendly. We will definitely be back as 2 days was not enough time to soak it all in.

This place is truly something else. If you are looking for that authentic Bali experience, then Ubud is not the place to be, this is. It has a really serene and peaceful atmosphere and is nestled around some lush green rice fields where the stars shine brightly at night. The hosts were incredibly attentive and considerate, and the food they prepared was also excellent. A highlight for us was having a cleansing ceremony, seeing the beautiful local Sekumpul and Fiji waterfalls, as well as having a massage on the veranda while it was raining outside - so relaxing. We certainly hope to come back one day as this was the highlight of our trip.

If waking up to the sounds of frogs croaking, roosters crowing and the early morning hindu prayers appeal to you - you hear them all, of course, because you sleep with doors and windows wide open, you can close it, if that's your preference - then this is the place for you away from the maddening crowd of Kuta. Ibu Mangko and Ibu Ayu, have been very gracious in hosting us. Went to the wet market with them - just be prepared to be stared at. Not a lot of tourists in these parts of Bali and you are exotic. Even dogs know that you are not from there. But people are friendly and a universal smile and hello goes a long way. Bear in mind that this is a 3 hr drive from the airport, going thru the chicken-like intestines (zigzag) road of the mountains, if you are prone to motion sickness - be aware, but if you persevere, you will be rewarded by a place free from want, including no WiFi :) but surrounded by swift birds at 7 am while eating breakfast, by 10 am dragon flies abound, then a couple fruit bats at night. When was the last time you actually looked at stars on a clear night?

Great views, lots of privacy and possibilities for short or longer scenic hikes. Ask the ladies to take you to Sekumpul waterfall, really worth a visit.

I love Bali and the King Valley in Victoria. Love to travel and thoroughly enjoy the abundance of nature in Bali and NE Victoria- the delightful people, food, plants, sunshine...Come and enjoy this wonderful island and stay.
"my story - I'm 60....I've been travelling overseas since I was 19... actually we travelled as a family since I was 6 years old. Kruger National Park each year, Mozambique each year around July, and then the sea - like Plettenberg Bay in summer time. Us "kids" all have it in our blood... I love the intertwinings, stories, colours and happy heart I get when travelling. Travelled to more than 30 plus countries and lived in 6 countries. And recently calculated 12 homes in last 12 years :) So at heart - a nomad.
Share my time between Victoria Australia and Bali :)
Travelled to Bali in 1975, and 1979 and now happily call it home 6 months of the year -- the other summer months I am in Cheshunt and love this landscape too. I really like and appreciate AirBNB - as a host and traveller (thanks guys!) - so easy and pleasant :)"
