The Space

This apartment is an ideal retreat if you travel on a budget, long for the privacy and quiet of the countryside, but still want to be in touch with Florence. It used to be the carpenter's workshop of this villa in the hills south east of Florence.
This apartment is small but quaint: it includes 1 bedroom with queen size bed, a kitchenette, a living area with sofa bed that sleeps one, and bathroom with shower.
Directly accessible from the large gardens, it comes with its private garden table with umbrella, and bbq.
It lays under the shade of the cypresses, so it is always cool.

The tower portion of this villa dates back to 1146. The rest of the building was added on in the 1400s , 1600s and 1800s. Many lives were saved during WWII by my grandfather who risked his own, by offering hiding and shelter to total strangers in this villa. We like to continue this tradition by welcoming people from all over the world.

Guest Access

The studio has its own washing machine, and a private outdoor table with umbrella.
The estate includes one shaded and one sunny garden, and a small olive grove shared with the other families in the building.
Numerous hikes start from here, and a little forest is accessible without even leaving the property.
Also shared access to BBQ and swing.

Interaction with Guests

We live in the building, so we are always here in case of need, or simply to share a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

ADDITIONAL OFFERS for our guests:

If you are planning a quiet evening but do not feel like cooking (or plan to return from your sightseeing right at dinner-time), we can prepare an all Tuscan simple but complete dinner to await you when you return, including wine and dessert.
Cost: 20€ per person.

2) Take a fun hands-on COOKING LESSON where you learn how to make pasta from scratch.
Time is flexible, we like to adjust to your schedule when possible.

That comes in 2 options:

A) take the 2–hour class and walk to your own private kitchenette with your freshly made pastas, as well as a freshly made sauce to dress them with. Make your own dinner with your hand-made creations!
50€, for 2 people. 20€ for every additional person.

B) take the 2–hour class, and stay for dinner in the top of the villa: that includes your creations and a whole meal, including home-made dessert and wine. The bonus: beautiful views, unlimited toppings of wine, and coffee. And you don’t have to do the dishes!. Cost per person: 50€

The Neighborhood

Local deli, freshly baked bread, cheeses, wine, great cappuccino and top butcher of the valley all right across the street, 5 minutes walk. PLEASE NOTE: No restaurant walking distance, but you can buy all the food you need to make your own. Very nice family style trattoria only 5 minutes driving from home.

Getting around

20 minutes drive to Florence, or 45 minutes by bus. Use of car not necessary if you are planning to just visit Florence during the day and simply relax and enjoy the countryside, but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for evening outings and explorations of Tuscany. The bus runs on weekdays until around 8:00 pm; but only 2 rides in the whole day on Sundays and holidays! If in need, we can pick you up or drop you off for a small fee.

  • Nicely located on the Tuscan mountains, we enjoyed this place very much! We stayed in the bottom apartment which was nicely cool and fully equipped with everything we needed. The view is surreal from the little terrace. Majla and Marco are just very relaxed, and we can definitely recommend taking the cooking class!
From this place we discovered the Chianti area, the vineyards and Florence.

  • This was absolutely the most wonderful place. The hosts were amazing, more like friends than strangers. The place was unbelievably amazing, the views were gorgeous, the food they made was delicious and the recommendations were very helpful. Me and my husband will definitely stay here again if we are ever given the chance.

  • Our absolute favorite place we stayed in Italy! We cannot say enough good things about this studio. The town is friendly, great local shops, scenic walks and absolutely amazing views! Majla was a fantastic host- we took the cooking class with her and her husband and loved it. Great food and company. She also helped us figure out the bus schedule and we were even able to schedule a ride back to the train station with Majla's husband to make things easier with all of our luggage.
The villa's history and views cannot be matched. We loved the villa so much that we got engaged on one of the hikes. By far the best memory of our trip! And we were able to purchase a print of the villa and will always remember our fantastic stay. Would definitely recommend staying here!

  • There is a pleasant view from the outdoor dining setting outside the studio door and the garden had irises in flower. The studio itself was adequate, bed quite comfortable and water pressure good. Good clothes storage. Windows are very small so need to stand at them to enjoy the view. A shame for us since it was too rainy and cold to sit outside.

I booked the studio to be in the Tuscan country side and have a more authentic experience, away from the tourist hoards. From the reviews, guests raved about Majla's hospitality, her pasta dinners and cooking lessons and tours so I felt reassured that despite it being Easter we would be ale to enjoy the same experiences. Unfortunately, Majla was not around over Easter and with all of the local shops for groceries, bread, fuel etc closed we were disappointed with our experience. I did ask Majla before arriving if there would be anything open on Good Friday and was told of the local restaurant Nuova Rancho, which we ate at, but it was not open on Easter Sunday .... nothing was.

We decided to cut our losses and leave a day early [Easter, Majla's absence and the weather conspired against us]. We were both disappointed that our experience was not the fabulous experience former guests had had and I felt that Majla might have told me that she would be away during our stay since the description of the studio included mention of the hospitality options she would be able to provide and reviewers obviously highlight this as the big positive of this airbnb listing.

  • This is a perfect spot if you want to get away from the noise of Florence and enjoy a real Tuscan countryside. The fact that it's a medieval villa is a big plus. Place is roomy and had everything one needs to a short or extended stay. We stayed three more days because it was such a great spot. Location - 45min bus ride to Florence, you can also take day trips to Bologna or Siena from the Florence train station.
Majla and Marco couldn't have been better hosts. Very kind and quick to respond to questions. Plus, they offer pasta classes and dinners. Definitely a choice you won't regret!

  • What an amazing stay! We stayed in the Studio for (3) nights and the Tower for (2). Majla was very responsive and helpful in her communications back and forth with us prior to our stay. As non-rev airline travelers, Majla was extremely accommodating and allowed us check in a night early with very last minute notice (as in, it's 4pm, could we come tonight?). She met us at the door even though we arrived late our first night and showed us around the Studio, how to use the coffee pot, lights, towels, etc. We used it as a 'base' to visit Florence, Greve in Chianti, San Gimignano and Bagno a Ripoli.

The villa itself, the views and the scenery are breathtaking - the pictures do not do it justice! If you've watched 'Under the Tuscan Sun' and always wanted to recreate that experience this is the place for you (or if you're not that cliche, and just want an amazing place to stay in Tuscany- still for you :) ) The property is very easy to find, charming inside and out, cozy and comfortable.

Included in both the tower & studio is a comprehensive book of very helpful information, including logistics for your stay, bus schedules, taxi recommendations, hiking and restaurant suggestions (which we highly suggest you take- we ate at Nuevo Ranch one evening, delicious!). Majla & Marco are tremendous hosts- you feel as though you've known them forever- and are very attentive and accommodating (and a text or a call will promptly resolve any questions you may stumble upon during your stay!)

We also did the winery tour & tasting and pasta making class & dinner with Majla & Marco, which was wonderful. There were only three other people besides my husband and I, making for a very personalized feel to the tour and plenty of opportunity to ask questions. The winery is beautiful and we were able to taste 3 wines, a dessert wine and local olive oil. During the pasta making class (hosted in Majla & Marco's villa), we were able to learn some of the amazing stories of the history of the property along with our culinary instruction. The meal was delicious and the entire experience was highly enjoyable!

Overall, our stay in the villa was a fabulous experience and exceeded our expectations in every way. When we make it back to Florence we will certainly be staying here, and you should do the same if planning a visit to the area :) Thank you Majla & Marco for an experience of a lifetime!

  • Staying in the Medieval Tower was amazing. Although we had an unexpected situation, Majla & Marco did more than necessary to help us in any way possible. We met a couple while traveling & recommended they stay here while in the Tuscan region. They also LOVED it. The view from the top of the tower is stunning, even in February. We did the cooking class and it was delicious! The tour of the winery was once in a lifetime. The views from there are just what you imagine the hills of Chianti to look like...again, even in winter. We rented a car in Florence & drove (without GPS, only a map) and it was relatively simple. If you're looking for a unique stay with welcoming hosts just down the hall, this is the place.

My children are the 6th generation in this medieval villa, and when our budget doesn't allow us to travel, we like a little bit of the world to come to us. My grandfather - a personal hero of mine - hid and saved many lives (often complete strangers, and foreigners), from the fury of the Fascists and Nazis during WW2, in the many nooks and crannies of this old home; and this has created in his heirs a tradition of opening this home to strangers. I am more hospitable than impeccable... One of my favourite quotes is: "if you don't believe in connections, you miss them". I recently wrote a book about happiness. My husband Marco is a retired professional yachtsman, and now a talented and passionate cook.
