The Space

Spacious garden cottage in shared Johannesburg garden. Fully furnished, self catering, secure off street parking. Wireless uncapped ADSL included. Centrally located close to universities (WITS/UJ) shopping at campus square, bars and restaurants at Melville and Fordsburg. It is a short cab ride away from Park Station. Asking R480 a night, with twice weekly cleaning included. Laundry can be arranged at an extra fee.

The cottage is in the garden of an old style Brixton house, while it runs off a shared garden you do not enter through the main house, so you have as much privacy as you need. Eugene and Zen live in the main house with cats Larry, Vickie and Fish. Eugene is a freelance photographer and Zen is an artist who teaches down the road at WITS university. Larry, Vickie and Fish are lazy, curious and friendly cats - to be honest fish is a little neurotic - but actually quite cool as a result. They live in the main house, and while they like to visit guests, they can be asked to leave you alone if you like.

We are both well used to orientating and advising both local and international guests to Joburg with advice on things ranging from museums and galleries to restaurants bars and parties. Other things like sim cards or cell phones to car rentals can easily be organised.

The cottage is an ideal place for visiting scholars, artists or people working in the city. It also lends itself nicely for a few day stop over from JHB international to the coast or game parks. It is spacious and with free uncapped adsl and is a great place to work and relax while being 5 minutes away from a bustling metropolis.

Guest Access

Swimming pool, garden, off street parking, wifi, laundry service or use of washing machine in the main house

Interaction with Guests

the cottage is secluded so guests have as much privacy as they want, there is a shared garden and we are around to help with advice etc.

The Neighborhood

It is an old and central neighborhood, with lots of interesting neighbours. It is located on the ridge that runs east/west through the city, so there are views of the north a short walk away.

Getting around

public transport is a 15 min walk on either side of the hill.

  • Wow, my experience with Zen quickly went from strangers to friends to brothers, he's such a wonderful and intelligent individual, to converse and spend leisure time with. The neighborhood is splendid to say the least, there's a few local supermarkets within walking distance in case you forgot to pack a small item.

  • Zen and Eugene are great hosts! Before arriving, Zen contacted me and arranged for a trusted taxi driver (Silus) to pick me and my co-worker up from the airport. While there, the guest house provided us with complete privacy when we wanted it. The place was very clean and organized. If we needed assistance with something we texted Zen and he would help us out.

Zen and Eugene are also great to hangout with and talk to. Overall, if you're looking for an affordable place to stay with a great host in Joburgh, Zen's won't let you down.

About
I was born in Durban, South Africa and moved around quite a bit, to the U.S. Holland and even Cape Town! Now I am settled in Johannesburg. I teach Fine Art at WITS University, and spend my time between teaching and making art. Eugene shares the main house with me - he is a photographer and between the both of us we enjoy hosting people and advising on how best to navigate jhb.
