............Unique Hawaiian Historical Site...............
Our cottage is set on the grounds of a 110 year
old Buddhist Mission located in beautiful, quiet
"Old Hawaii with a twist of Zen"
Aloha, Folks! E Komo Mai! Welcome to this exciting step to your adventure in Hawaii!
In the quiet, Artist Community of charming Holualoa Village, nestled on the slopes of the forested Hualalai foothills, just 5 miles above the heat and hustle of Kailua-Kona, we have prepared your home away from home.
We invite you to your accommodations, where ample domestic amenities open up to lush gardens in the heart of the Kona coffee belt. Take part in the richly landscaped 1/4 acre that is your private space during your stay. A furnished, softly lit gazebo gives you a central view (rain or shine; night or day) to tropical exotics from around the world, Asian and European greens, culinary herbs, native Hawaiian medicines, and fruit trees. Two other outdoor lanais (covered sitting areas) are yours to enjoy just outside the Cottage.
You'll have the privacy of your own bath and open air kitchen which look out into the fragrant gardens that surround.
Massage, breakfast, and guided tours (free access to Parks provided) are also available for scheduling at a reasonable and competitive fee. Every service you might imagine at a high-end tourist trap is tempered to your convenience, in-house, on a reasonable budget.
We take great pleasure in catering to the needs of the Adult Traveler with a sense of fun, who enjoys the serenity of the countryside with the convenience of rural markets, Fine Dining, Cafes, and exquisite galleries- all within walking distance. Ted has called Hawaii home for nearly 30 years and delights in suggesting little known jewels for dining, attractions and beaches.
Accommodations are available for as many as 3 total guests. One queen bed and one twin bed sleep our maximum comfortably.
We look forward to seeing you!
Because of the Historic status of this property, uneven ground and multilevel architecture, this rental is best suited for people without difficulty in mobility. Parking is on the lawn, a short walk up the driveway. We leave the light on for late-comers and folks who like to Moon Dance.
If you prefer to prepare your own food, your private outdoor kitchen is screened in and roofed and has all the modern amenities. It is fully stocked with your own personal refrigerator/freezer unit, gas range/oven, running hot and cold water, water cooler/heater, serving ware for four, cooking implements, pots and pans and baking ware, and various ingredients in the pantry.
Enjoy full use of the washer and drier and sun drying rack (if you prefer.) Laundry detergent is provided.
Enjoy the privacy of your own bathroom. A cozy shower with complimentary toiletries, towels, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent are included in your stay.
The gardens are often ready for one food or another to be harvested. We are happy to share this with you.
Going to the beach? Take your pick of any of our gear! Fins, snorkels, masks, boogie boards, towels, coolers, mats, and chairs are all at your disposal.
If there is anything you need just let us know.
Interaction with Guests
Although we live on the same grounds as the Garden Cottage, we respect your privacy. However, we go out of our way to ensure your comfort. We are available while we are on the grounds to address your needs.
You are always welcome to ask questions or express any concerns you might have. We truly wish for you to feel relaxed and at home. We encourage you to enjoy the peaceful, Zen experience of our Gardens... And leave the islands with a true sense of Aloha.
The Historical Society has recently displayed signage all around town giving Historical Landmarks (of which your B&B is one) more visibility. Delight in old garages and post offices converted into beautiful galleries and mercantile and take advantage of seasonal festivals, monthly Nighttime Art Strolls and weekly outdoor markets.
The more you explore and the more inquisitive you are, the more Old Hawaii will reveal itself to you.
It is recommended that our guests rent a vehicle during their stay. This puts the convenience of independent travel at your disposal. There is no public transit through Holualoa Village and taxi fares are high.
A private car brings sites of interest within 15 to 20 minutes from your accommodations.
Other Things to Note
We will respond to your inquiries promptly and encourage clear and detailed communication. As you book your flight, let us know when you will be arriving and when you plan to arrive in Holualoa. We are only 20 minutes away from the airport. So, please arrange to have our cellular number so you can call us when you land if you are checking in with us that day. If you are already on the Big Island, just let us know when you plan on arriving the day of your check-in.
We appreciate this courtesy. It helps us to know you have arrived safely. We also like to put final touches on your Cottage and be here to meet and greet you when you arrive.
Make yourself at Home!
Come and see us soon!
Ted and Aaron
Our stay at Ted's place was just what we wanted: private, away from the touristy area, and quiet. The cottage is lovely with everything you need to be comfortable. We appreciated the extra touches like kona coffee, toiletries, towels, laundry and snorkel gear (even though we didn't get around to using it). Ted is super friendly and helpful. We would definitely recommend his place to anyone. We would also recommend the Holualoa Gardens and Cafe for exquisite food.
The cottage has plenty of space, is peaceful, and is even more beautiful than the pictures show. It was clean and well maintained. The full kitchen offers a great way to take advantage of the local produce and fish markets around the island if you enjoy cooking. It is up the mountain a ways from the main tourist areas on the west side of the island - a very good location if you prefer being a bit off the beaten path.
Ted is a warm person and a generous host. He's knowledgeable and gave great suggestions when we had questions. Along with the cottage he provided many small things that made adventuring around the Big Island much more convenient that it would have been - snorkel equipment, bottled water, and a cooler with ice were waiting for us on arrival along with chocolates and fresh fruit.
Even though we were very late arriving Ted met us with a big smile and took us on a quick tour of the cottage and property. Immediately we felt welcome. We had a lovely basket of fruit on our kitchen table and coffee for the morning.
The garden is spectacular both day and night. Ted has set up two covered outdoor living spaces with comfortable furniture. Even with the bit of rain we had we were able to enjoy the outside areas throughout.
We enjoyed the location being a few degrees cooler that the lower part of the island. Being able to come back to the cottage mid afternoon to relax and cool down before heading out again was wonderful. The cooler temperature was also perfect for sleeping.
Ted called our experience 'outdoor living'. It was a true Hawaiian experience.
Ted was a very nice guy to get to know. He was always helpful, gave us some excellent advise and was never intrusive.
Renting from Ted was wonderful.
Ted was clear that I should consider myself at home while there, and he really did make me feel like it was all there for me. A nice fruit basket and other amenities including beach gear were there for my use. Such a peaceful place to escape to away from the busy tourist area and at a cooler elevation. I wish I had better botany skills so I could name all the plants in the garden. Definitely watch the Aloha Buddha DVD he has on hand so you gain a better perspective on the special nature of the site. The Holuakoa Cafe is right up the street was a great place to get coffee and have a couple of awesome brunches. Everything was fabulous and a perfect ending to my two weeks on the Big Island! Mahalo!!
We had a lovely relaxing 18 day stay in this peaceful garden oasis in the delightful artistic village of Holualoa. We arrived late but Ted was there to greet us and make us welcome. Fresh fruit and coffee was waiting for us in the morning to enjoy in the delightful gazebo.
I was quite ill with a nasty cold for the first 2 weeks, but Ted and Aaron provided many natural remedies and TLC to help me heal. Ted's orchids provided food for the soul and I managed to paint 3 of them while recuperating.
The accommodation was a good as described and had all the appliances and dishes we needed for our extended stay, including a barbeque. Basic condiments were provided and directions to the most economical shopping were appreciated. We enjoyed many meals in the gazebo watching the little geckos race around. We had full access to laundry facilities and beach equipment.
A bonus was viewing Ted's exquisite original jewelry designs. We enjoyed talking with both Ted and Aaron and learning more about the island and their lovely little corner of it. This place is truly a little piece of paradise that is being lovingly restored. Ted has captured the spirit of the Japanese Buddhist temple which he maintains and has augmented the gardens with many pieces of sculpture from all over Asia. Each plant and ornament had a story that he was happy to share those stories with us.
When he realized that I had confused the dates on my booking for our next Airbnb place, he went out of his way to find us a place for the night in a hotel.
Anyone who stays in this serene place will leave feeling at peace.
Ted was incredibly helpful on recommendations and super welcoming. He had a water cooler, fruit and beach items for us to use which was greatly appreciated.
Wonderful cottage, we loved all the outdoors sitting areas around the house. Ted and his family really made us feel special and at home. We will definitely be back!
