Truly a relaxing getaway @ the Zen Garden. The accommodations were lovely enhanced with artistic furnishings from Bali. I especially enjoyed morning yoga in the outdoor gazebo. Everything you need, including an informative generous honest, for a wonderful vacation rental!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ted's cottage! So beautiful, both the cottage and the gorgeous garden! Ted was a great host, we arrived to a basket of fresh Island fruits, his cottage had everything we could have possibly needed, as well he had lots of great suggestions as far as the "best" places to go on the island for snorkelling, boogie boarding, turtle watching, restaurants! We loved being away from the chaos of Kona when we were done for the day, and could retreat just a short drive up the hill to our nice cool cottage. Thanks for making our first visit to the Big Island so wonderful, we just got home, and already want to come back! Mahalo!
I had the pleasure to spénd 4 nights in a piece of Paradise in this cottage. I have enjoyed Ted and David hospitality and kindness and all they provide ( food, fruits , boogy boards., etc ) for free .
I highly recommend to spénd Time in this cottage and its beautiful garden . So awesome place.
Hope to Côme back as soon as i Can in this cottage .
I couldn't have asked for a better place! If you want to be next to nature in a beautiful garden, enjoy the calmness of a most peaceful place and experience the generous hospitality of two hosts who have thought of everything you might need even before you had yourself, you might be lucky if Ted and David's Zen Cottage ist still vakant. I recommend it to everybody who feels like awhile in paradise (without a snake).

If you are planning a Hawaiian getaway on the Big Island, and you are looking for a place located in a private Zen garden, then you must stay here. Ted is a wonderful host and the guest cottage is remarkable with all the amenities of a full kitchen, wi-fi, TV and DVD player. It is airy and comfortable, with several private garden areas just for you. You can see the bananas growing from the screened in kitchen and enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful oasis just a few minutes above the hustle and bustle of the Kilo tourist area. Ted was friendly, helpful and informative and made us feel like family friends. If we are ever able to return to the Big Island, we will definitely stay here and plan on recommending it to all our friends!
We loved our stay at the Zen Garden. The roomy indoor/outdoor areas are many, pleasantly decorated w/ Hawaiian art and artifacts, casual and conducive to relaxation and meditation (if you do that sort of thing). The garden is lush and begs to be photographed. The coquis (little frogs) filled our nights w/ music. Our hosts were generous (fruit & flowers galore), informative and available without intruding on our privacy. We will be back!
Ted and David are gracious hosts with an excellent zen cottage. It was a very private area with several outdoor lanais, lots of fruit trees and other plants, as well as some outdoor creatures that make the place such a relaxing place! They welcome guests with fresh fruits and coffee, as well as bath and beach towels, sunscreen, aloe vera, etc. It is in Holualoa Village, where the coffee plantations and art galleries are. We will definitely book this place when we return to Kona.
What a wonderful week we had at the Zen Garden! Flowers, fruit, wonderful accommodations (inside and outside), and the Best hosts ever. Ted and David were extremely warm and helpful, there with us when we needed them, not there when we didn't. Perfect. We are definitely going back next year!
Ted and Dave's was our first experience using airbnb, and it worked out quite well for us. Being upcountry, we liked how temperatures cooled off at night. The cottage is decorated with a tasteful collection of tropical hardwood and woven furniture. Numerous carvings, figurines and soothing waterfalls accent cottage and grounds. Ted works to keep his own version of a tropical garden going, which adds to the peaceful setting. Kamala liked hanging out under the gazebo out back, drinking her morning coffee and reading.
The kitchen, although screened-in, has an outdoor feel to it, which we appreciated after a long day in the sun. After sunset, the kitchen and lanai area grew cool at night, whereas the living area stayed comfortably warm from the days solar rays. During the late night the room would slowly cool off (we slept under a bedspread and blanket), and as soon as the sun rose, the kitchen/lanai area would warm up all over again. The transition from indoors to outdoors felt seamless.
Ted and Dave are cordial hosts who respect your privacy, but are happy to converse with you as well, sharing the days events, making suggestions to your itinerary if want them.
The Zen Garden has what I guess one might a call a "good funk" feel to it, which I'm thinking is the theme to many of these airbnb rentals. You are staying at someone's home, or, in Ted and Dave's case, in the cottage behind their home. The appliances are a bit worn, but work fine (enjoyed cooking with a gas range again), and make sure you duck your head as you walk under the little causeway along the narrow, winding path up to your cottage. It's padded, just in case. Ted gave our a little tour of the temple itself our last morning there, which is, I think he said 120 years old. Om Buddha.
Four stars to Ted and Dave... I'd give them five, but then they'd have to work extra hard to maintain an inflated reputation, which can become a curse. Mahalo, Chris
We had a VERY pleasant stay at Ted and Dave's cottage. They are gracious hosts and most thoughtful. A basket of tropical fruits was waiting for us on arrival, and a birthday cake and flowers!!! (it was my birthday when I arrived). Their joy in sharing the island's fruits and culinary delights continued throughout our stay, which was a highlight of our trip, tasting all flavors of papayas, star fruits bananas, ...
They made available to us snorkeling gear (there is enough for a whole family). Their garden has a clementine tree, which we helped ourselves to (delicious!). Plenty of fluffy towels and beach towels. Locations is up on a hill so it's a nice escape from the heat of the seaside area.
I was pleasantly surprised by the sense of safety there, coming from the mainland, where locks and alarms and safes are the norm. It took only a few days, but we felt much more safe at Ted&Dave's without any locks, than we would in a fenced and gated hotel with security guard outside, and our valuables in a closet safe. Seeing people (men and women) walking alone or jogging at all times of day and night, in city or outside, reinforced that sense.
Finally, our hosts, Ted and Dave, make themselves very available to us, and at the same time very discreet so we would take our time getting to know the island and things we wanted to do, which we appreciated very much. Mahalo Ted & Dave!
