My partner and I spent two wonderful months in Casa Kaltic this summer. The house and hospitality we were met with there far exceeded our greatest hopes: from top to bottom, the house is beautiful, clean, and carefully decorated, and Roberto is a truly kind and gracious host--available for advice about San Cristobal, assistance, or interesting conversation (he lives right next door). My partner and I are both writers and spent our time at Casa Kaltic working (with two bedrooms, each equipped with a desk, and an excellent internet signal, it's the perfect location for a working couple), exploring the city and taking Spanish classes downtown. As others have mentioned, the house is a pleasant distance from the center of the city (15 minutes by taxi, 30-40 minutes by public transport/combi). It's easy to get into the city, but at Casa Kaltic, you're removed enough to truly focus. On top of that, the neighborhood is lovely, surrounded by forests with easily accessible hiking paths. The neighborhood also feels safe--I am a young woman and felt perfectly secure walking around on my own. Other highlights include the organic garden (from which Roberto invites you to pick vegetables), fully equipped kitchen (we cooked all summer), large bedrooms, TV with cable/HDMI hookup, and hot water. And of course, San Cristobal is a not-to-be-missed city, full of art, international spirit, and interesting local culture. We were a bit concerned about the weather, but found it to be very comfortable during our whole stay (June thru August), neither too hot nor too chilly. We can't wait to return!

Roberto is an excellent host. He is friendly, generous and welcoming and was responsive to anything we needed during our stay, but respectful of our privacy. The house is lovely, very spacious and comfortable for a two bedroom house with large bedrooms (the master bedroom is huge!) and a large well supplied kitchen and living space. We did a lot of cooking and the kitchen was great. The home has been decorated very beautifully. I work via internet and the internet signal was reliable and smooth. It sits on a lovely property with an organic garden in the middle. It is in a safe secluded neighbourhood surrounded by mountains. It is about 15 minutes taxi ride from the town centre or a one hour walk. The taxis are very cheap. We would recommend this as a great place to stay to be close to central San Cristobal but not in the middle of it, so more peaceful.

Roberto is a wonderful host, warm and welcoming. He's also a serious foodie and can tell you where to shop and even guide you though the huge market near the house. As a linguistics professor he is very knowledgeable regarding many of the indigenous populations in Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guatemala. The house is as it looks in the photos, bright, airy and tasteful with lots of wonderful art. The beds are comfortable, the water is always hot and there is good lighting. Lots of good-size tables with sold chairs and good lamps if you want to work. The photos don't show that there is a really wonderful organic vegetable garden in back, which is available to guests. So if you tastes run to kale smoothies, you'll be in heaven. The area is very safe as although it is not really a 'gated' community there is a guard at the one gateway into Fracc. Kaltic. Not much traffic so it's also a nice place for a short, 20 min. walk. Perhaps the only drawback is that it is too far from the town centre to walk. You will have to take a taxi or a combi whenever you want to go somewhere. However, you are trading this for a quiet, safe, green neighbourhood. As an older single woman traveller I was more than happy with this trade-off.

Roberto has every quality that makes him a ideal host, congenial, engaging, funny, and helpful. Plus he is an amazing cook! The house is well appointed, comfortable and decorated with interesting pieces of art. It is very private and peaceful,on the edge of the city, and an easy collectivo/taxi ride to the center. Our stay was made even better by having our host next door. A wonderful experience in every way.

Regresariamos felices!

Response from Roberto:
