Here you can enjoy community or privacy, by interacting when you want with the other international residents of the building. Most come to study Spanish, work, semester abroad, do volunteer work, or just enjoy one of the most innovative cities in the world.
The building consists of three apartments:
Apt 201 - 5 bedroom, 2 full bath, 2 half bath, kitchen, living room, dining room, balcony. Each bedroom has one bunk bed and one queen-sized bed.
Apt 301 - 5 bedroom, 2 full bath, 2 half bath, kitchen, living room, dining room, balcony. Each bedroom has one queen-sized bed.
Apt 401 - 3 bedroom, 2 bath, currently occupied
All rooms are fully furnished with firm, queen-sized beds, desk, TV, digital safe, linens, etc. Extra beds are available if you want to share a room.
We are conveniently located in the geographic hub of Medellin with easy access to all forms of public transportation. Within one block there are buses to the metro, to the entertainment district (El Poblado, Zona Rosa, Parque Lleras). Walk three blocks and you can catch the new MetroPlus line, a dedicated bus lane that gets you to important destinations quickly.
Directly in front of the building is one of the largest, most-visited Sports/recrecation complexes in Medellin, La Unidad Deportiva de Belen. Here you can play basketball, soccer, frisbee, tennis, etc., for free! Use of the swimming pool is about $2/day. There is also a new, international standard, 16-lane bowling alley, two pools (one olympic), archery, dirt bike riding course, and much more.
Fast and Stable Wifi throughout the building, including rooftop and downstairs deck area.
From the roof you have an incredible 360 degree view of the city of Medellin. The rooftop seating area is a huge, u-shaped sofa, accented with original tables made from antique doors, windows, and skylights.
Large gas grill on the roof, steam room, washer/dryer, and full bathroom with shower.

This is the to stay to get to know other travelers and another part of Medellin besides Poblado (the neighborhood that almost all the tourist guides point you to). I was taking Spanish classes in Poblado and walked every day the 5k to/from International House because I like to walk, but there are also taxis everywhere (I think they charge around 8000 COP to go to Poblado) and you can also walk a few blocks to the Fatima MetroPlus stop. The rooftop deck and the sports complex across the street were a huge highlight. Joel and Leidy were both very helpful and accommodating, including hooking me up with his recommended taxi driver for a discounted ride to the airport the day I left. I have to agree with another reviewer that this isn't the quietest place to stay due to the sports complex, close airport, and the other guests socializing (my bedroom was on the 4th floor and I could hear the TV and all the conversation on the rooftop deck very clearly), so just take that into account. If you need a private, very quiet space with stable internet to work, this may not be the right fit. If you're looking to have fun and socialize, this is a great place to stay.
This house was really great if you want to meet lots of new people from all over the world. It has a social roof terrace, which is quiet in the day and popular in the evening. My bedroom was secure and clean, but a little noisy next to the street and the sports centre over the road. There are also planes going overhead as it is near a domestic airport, but you get used to it after a while. The owner Joel was a really good guy and very helpful, even when I was stupid enough to lock myself out of my room. My only small criticism is that it would have been nice to have known about the work going on at the place in advance of my trip. It wasn't too much of an issue, but it would have been nice to know before I arrived. Overall I would recommend this place if you are travelling in Colombia!
International House is great! My girlfriend and I booked a four night stay and decided to extend for a month. We are trying to stay in Medellin for a few months while looking for work, and Joel's place is filled with like minded ambitious people. International house is right across the street from an amazing sports complex, centrally located and once and a while theres a great potluck dinner. I would recommend this place for sure.
Joel's place was great. It is located in a very beautiful and safe neighborhood, with cafes, bars, markets very near. Joel was very helpful in suggesting places to see. I would highly recommend Joel's place.
International House, Medellin
We had a fantastic time at International House. As soon as we arrived, Joel made us feel at home and gave us tips about the local area. Our room was spacious, the shower was incredible (especially as in South America it's hard to find a hot shower) and the flat we were staying in was spotless. Every morning we would have our breakfast on the balcony, looking at beautiful views of the mountains and colourful birds in the trees.
The terrace is a huge social area with benches, big tables, loads of cushions, a kitchen, washing machines and a dryer. Every time I (website hidden)d with anyone I made sure I did it there as the views of the mountains are breathtaking. If you stay there you definitely have to be on the terrace at sunset, the skies are pink and and lights of the city are gold. I took lots of photos!
Joel made us a welcome dinner on the terrace on our second day with some of the other housemates. That made us feel very welcome. He is a very relaxed, cool guy and loves meeting different types of people. He is genuinely interested in the people who live there and will go out of his way to help you out.
There is a very friendly vibe to the house and I really enjoyed meeting the people there, there were lots of different nationalities. We felt like we had a lot of space to socialise or just to chill out.
The Internet connection is excellent and there is (email hidden) on the terrace where people can watch films or TV lounging on the cushions. We also had a TV in our room with loads of channels in Spanish and English.
Inma and Adriana, who help around International House, were charming and gave us tips on places to go in Medellin.
And how could I forget Basco, the adorable labradoodle who lives in International House! He is very cute and reminded me a bit of Will Ferrell (maybe it's the hair).
We were sad to leave Medellin, it's a fantastic city and we had such a good time in International House. As a place to stay, I can't imagine how we'll top it. I wish I was there right now! It makes such a big difference to stay with friendly people who make you feel at home.
We hope to go to International House San Francisco, which Joel also runs, one day.
Simplemente magnífico! Volvería a quedarme en la International House sin duda alguna! Gracias Joel!
great and comfortable place in Medellin, equipped with everything you'd need for a short or long stay. You will meet plenty of international students staying here! Joel was a fantastic host and helped my brother and I out trememdously when we were in a bind looking for a place. Don't miss the outdoor kitchen and gorgeous rooftop!
Joel was great. He was very helpful and kind, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay at his house again.
