The Space

Large, comfortable double room in a typically English home, a Victorian terrace house with original features.

The room has heaps of charm. On a level of its own, secluded and private. Fresh crisp bed linens, clean towels, tea and coffee making facilities, are provided with plenty of storage in a chest of drawers and antique wardrobe.

This period Victorian property has a vintage feel, with fire places and roll-top bath, but it also has mod cons including free wireless broadband and an ipod docking station and hairdryer in your room. Please note there is no television in the room but you can view on the internet using wifi.

We have spent a lot of time renovating and making the place homey, attractive and practical and hope you enjoy your stay here.

Guest Access

We have two shared bathrooms in the house. On the top floor next to your bedroom is a bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet and sink. On the floor below is the main bathroom (which we tend to use) which has a roll-top bath, toilet, and sink. Guests are very welcome to use either.

For guests that choose to eat breakfast, this is served downstairs in the dining room (please see photos).

Although we don't offer cooking facilities (please see house rules) the kitchen is often available to sit in. We can heat up food for you to eat there.

We are a bit like a traditional English Bed and Breakfast and generally expect guests to be out and about in the day exploring and enjoying London. It gives us the chance to do some cleaning and make lots of noise without disturbing you. However there are exceptions to the rule and if you want to stay here one particular morning or afternoon please just let us know.

Interaction with Guests

We love to meet our guests and hear how your journies have been and make sure that you are comfortable and enjoy your time in London. So we love to see you for a brief chat but we understand how important it is to have a sense of your own space to relax. We invite you to make yourself at home and ask us for any advice or anything that you need to get the most out of your trip.

We will give you our mobile number numbers for advice if and when you need it.

The Neighborhood

Camberwell is a Victorian residential area in Zone 2 (out of 6 Zone that make up London) mainly built one to two hundred years ago. It was originally a village with water wells and springs that attracted holidaymakers rest, relaxation and health reasons.

Now, Camberwell and Peckham are the places to see young artists in London. Its a vibrant and creative multicultural area with numerous galleries, great bars and amazing local places to eat; The Peckham Refreshment Room (modern tapas (email hidden) near the station) Ganapati (Southern Indian cuisine), The Begging Bowl (great Thai food), The Crooked Well (Michellin Recommended Gastro Pub), The Victoria and The Peckham Rye (good gastropubs if you wish to eat local), Andersen and Co (a great place for a slice of cake), Melange (for French chocolates), Petitou (for a light lunch) and Manze's Pie & Mash shop (a London institution) are all less than 10 minutes walk from the house.

Peckham Market is also open every day and also seven minutes walk from the house. The South London Gallery is at the end of the road and always has good temporary exhibitions.
Enjoy the best of both world being in a vibrant local neighbourhood yet close to London's centre.

ABOUT US We are a TV director/producer and designer who like to stay creative and tuned in to all London has to offer. A British/Australian couple who have stopped our own travel for a few years to look after our young son who is almost two years old. He loves meeting guests and gets more mentions in our reviews than anything.
We having been hosting for over a year now and really enjoying meeting guests, and making friends.

Getting around

There are buses from the end of our road to central London:
- 12 to London Eye, Big ben, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Street
- 171 to Waterloo and Holborn
- 36/436 Victoria, Hyde Park, Marble Arch, Paddington

We are 700metres to two overground train stations that connect to the London Underground. They are
- Denmark Hill, for Victoria, Clapham Junction,
- Peckham Rye, for London Bridge, Shoreditch, Hoxton

Parking outside the house on the street is free. There are no parking restrictions. The house is also an ideal base to explore Brighton, Oxford, Stonehenge, and other parts of Southern or Central England.

  • Really nice place to stay! We were perfectly welcomed by Daniel who explained us the ins and outs of London in a clear way. He had great tips. The other two days a friend of his (penny) was very helpful and kind. We felt at home. The neighbourhood was nice especially the restaurant over there (email hidden) on top of a parking lot.
We slept very good and overall we would certainly recommend a stay at madeline and Daniel!

  • Highly recommended. Stayed for two nights and had best night's sleep I have had for a while. The hosts, Maddy, Dan & Fabian (nearly two!) are very welcoming and very hospitable. Will definitely be staying again!

  • A wonderful host family, especially baby Fabian. He is most welcoming. The Schemmers just made us feel so comfortable hanging out at their house and coming and going at all hours. The room is private while the bathroom is shared, but it's right next door to the bedroom, so it's basically en suite. The room itself is very cosy with room for two people and their sprawling luggage. I would stay here again and recommend it.

  • Maddy and her family were wonderful: Starting with a very kind and patient e-mail contact, an early check-in due to our schedule, very good advices and tips about sightseeing and London transport. Maddy (and Dan, too) were caring and we felt welcome all the time. Not forgetting the most important thing: A beautiful house, furnished with a huge love for detail located in a pleasant quarter (to us it was "typical britain"). We felt safe all the time. Our Room and the two shared bathrooms were comfortable, tidy and exactly as shown on the photos. Its not just that this was our first AirBnB experience, we never had a stay in such a private setting before. We highly recommend Maddy and Dan! Thank you so much for making our days in London more interesting and for making our nights very relaxing. We would be happy to stay at your home again.

  • Madeline, Dan & (the adorable) Fabian have the most comfortable, light and spacious home that we could have hoped to have shared during our recent stay. Our room was perfect; exceptional mattress, beautiful bedding, drink making facilities - & big, fluffy towels to boot! The house is on a fantastic route for travelling into & across Central London, with a great day/night bus service also. Madeline & Dan are great hosts, giving us some fantastic recommendations for local eateries & attractions, & happily accommodating our tailored schedule, which involved a (very) early morning return. We wholly recommend staying with them if you can - and hope to do so again ourselves, someday (soon!).

  • My second time with Maddy and Dan in two weeks—again a great stay. Always helpful and friendly, and a comfortable space. I even discovered a new neighborhood this time. Highly recommend!

  • I really enjoyed staying with Maddie, Dan and Fabian. Their house was comfortable, clean and quiet, and Maddie was very helpful with directions etc. Good location if you want access to the Overground line, which I needed. Great place to get some quiet rest after traveling. I'd come back.
