About this listing
Lovely japanese-style room with sliding shoji screens and real 2" thick tatami floors. Come upstairs to enjoy the rest of the home including hottub overlooking the ocean, gourmet kitchen, piano, fireplace, quiet conversation areas and decks.
Rent a room in The Sea Sanctuary, a beautiful home which has everything you could desire in a place for a relaxing getaway - fireplace, hottub facing the ocean, 180 degree ocean views, great kitchen, piano, and miles upon miles of beaches to stroll just outside the home. A seal colony lives just 1/3 mile to the south and migrating whales can be seen from the home during the winter and early spring. The home normally rents out for $$600+/ night for groups wishing exclusive access to the entire home.
This listing is for one of the two rooms downstairs available for rent, a lovely Japanese-style room with sliding shoji screen doors. There is a queen size futon with nice memory foam topper. The floor is made from 2 1/2" thick tatami floor mats. Note that while the screens are beautiful and completely close off the room, they are made of wood and laminated paper so it's not quite as private. The other room for rent, a more formal bedroom which has a nice queen size bed and a view facing the ocean, can be seen in a 2nd listing here on airbnb. There is a full bathroom available for use downstairs which will be shared if the other bedroom is occupied.
If you rent both available rooms, you would also have sole access to large open yoga/exercise area with 2 additional futons for sleeping and the full bathroom mentioned above. Groups larger than 4 pay an additional $25/night per person. If you are a group of 1 or 2 and would like sole use of the downstairs area, I would rent that to you for $30 less than the total rate for the two rooms.
You are very welcome to share the common living areas upstairs including kitchen, living room, hot tub, decks, etc.
Please note that I also shy away from renting to guests with smaller children since I want to be able to ensure a tranquil retreat for all guests.
As your host, I'll definitely respect your desire for privacy, or perhaps we can spend some time conversing if that seems to be what the mood presents.
If you are into cooking, the kitchen is fully stocked for your use I ncluding Vitamix, KitchenAId Mixer, oven, mircowave, etc.
I do rent the entire house out at times under a separate listing here if that is of interest to you.
Nothing outside of the master suite in the home is off limits, please enjoy as if you were visiting old friends.
Interaction with Guests
I do my best to let the guests set the tone for interaction. I try to leave plenty of space for privacy and I naturally try to honor that, but wonderful conversations often arise over tea or at other times.
It's very quiet and right in front of the home is one of the most beautiful and rarely traveled beaches I've ever come across.
Car is definitely necessary, although there is a lovely paved trail parallel to the ocean which can take you all the way into Fort Bragg if you like.
Shoes off in the home please. Normal check in 4pm, check out 11am. Please ask if you would like something other than this and I may be able to accommodate.
This place is a true oasis of peace.
The house is amazing and the view is stunning!
The room was really nice and cozy. It perfectly matches the description!
Overall one of the best experiences I've had with Airbnb!
Ted was an excellent host. His description and pictures are spot on. This is truly a sanctuary for anyone looking to get away. Everything is there in the description of the house, but it's also worth noting that Ted is also a welcome "feature" of the home, as his demeanor and calming nature ensured that our stay was pleasant and calming. My fiance (and now wife) and I stayed for two nights and are happy to recommend this place for many, many reasons. The beach, the neighborhood, the area, the tatami room, the kitchen, the fireplace... I could go on and on. A definite highlight was looking at the stars while soaking in the hot tub to the sound of the roaring ocean. That's hard to beat!
Ted's house is a-ma-zing! We would move in permanently if we could.
Seriously, this was one of our most unique and enjoyable Airbnb stays ever.
The house is beautifully designed and built, providing a relaxing atmosphere, and one of the greatest ocean views.
It has a large balcony (with outside hot tub!!) which was perfect for watching the sunset, and the starry sky at night.
There's a huge, fully-equipped kitchen, a central music system (Sonos), and a fireplace.
Ted is super pleasant. He was helpful and friendly (offered us tea from his large collection), and made us feel very welcome and at home. A true super host.
We slept in the quiet Japanese-style room (futon bed on tatami mats) and had a great night sleep, with absolute serenity.
We stayed 1 night as we were traveling along the coastline. The house was across from the beach. D easy location.
Great experience with Ted and his awesome basement. Killer ocean view and stroll. Great hot tub. All around peaceful and welcoming.
Thanks Simon. Just a note of clarification to future renters, the room which I rent via this listing is on the ground floor. Where I come from in the midwest, a "basement" is generally at least partially subterranean. This space is fully above ground. All guests are very welcome to enjoy the top floor as well where the main living room, kitchen, decks and hot tub are. Nice meeting you two, Simon. Thanks for staying here!
Ted was a wonderful host and his home was everything we could have hoped for. Inspired, calming, well appointed and steps from the beach. Sitting beneath a billion stars in the jacuzzi listening to the waves crash makes this place a 10/10 must stay for anyone visiting the North Coast.
Both Ted and Ted's house were great! Ted was a very gracious host, opening up his kitchen and living spaces for use in addition to the rented room. You can tell that Ted is very experienced and comfortable with airbnb, which helped us feel very welcomed and at ease. It seemed that whenever we might have a question about something we would look and there would be a note with just the right information on it to address our questions. The house was also beautiful, and is kept in wonderful shape! We stayed in the tatami room, which is right off a downstairs bonus area. The room was lovely. At first we were unsure which room we would prefer, and in the end after looking at both in person, we would be completely comfortable in either one. Ted also has a fast wifi network and internet connection, in the sad event you have to keep up with work while you are there. I did a speed test and it was 60Mbps.
The location is spectacular. You are right across the street from the northern California coast, which includes a great trail for walking or biking. Its roughly a 4.5 mile walk/bike into town along the beach trail and to an ice cream shop. :)
Another great point is its only about 1 mile from Mackerricher State Park. In our case we had several family members camping there. This is a fantastic option if you are with a group that's camping and you would prefer the amenities of a house.

About the Host, Ted
I have many interests including photography, travel, writing, playing piano and guitar, singing, performing music, yoga, poetry, meditation, website development, ultimate frisbee, tennis, fermenting foods, eating healthy woodworking and probably a few more things thrown in.
I've been lucky enough to see a lot of different places in the world over the past several years. India and Nepal are my favorites, but also spent quite a bit of time in Eastern Europe (notably Ukraine) and the rest of Europe too. My father lives in Thailand so I get over there occasionally as well.
I consider myself pretty easy to get along with and enjoy meeting new people and having new experiences. As a host, I'm happy to converse but I also do my best to stay attuned to my guests and offer them as quiet and tranquil a getaway as they may want.
