Where you’ll be

Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain

NEIGHBORHOOD:
The POBLE SEC district is a part of Barcelona located at the foot of Montjuic, whose central thoroughfare is the Avinguda del Paral·lel, few steps from this Barcelona apartment.
Avinguda del Paral·lel for decades was the centre of the city’s nightlife with a dozen theatres, numerous music halls and cafés peopled by cabaret artists and bon viveurs; a steamy mix of eroticism and anarchism.
When the street was officially opened in October 1894, it was already home to a burgeoning entertainment industry of cafés, music halls and, particularly towards the port end, brothels. By the early 20th century, it had as many as 10 theatres and several music and dance halls along a stretch of barely 300 fun-laden metres, leading to the avenue’s nickname of the ‘Montmartre barcelonés’.
In addition to El Molino musical hall, today just three theatres remain: Apolo, Condal and Victoria, but the city council has recently purchased the old Arnau theatre, which has stood in a sorry state for several years, with the aim of turning it into an as-yet-unspecified cultural centre. The plan forms part of a project to return Barcelona’s Broadway to its former glory, making what the council calls an “avenue of leisure” for the city.

Hi there, I’m Aga. I am an architect, have been living in Barcelona for several years already. I run a boutique architecture studio Agami Design Architecture & Interiors: www.agamidesign.com . I am deeply in love with Catalan Pyrenees, where I go any time I can. If not in the mountain, you can find me sailing with friends in Costa Brava, enjoying its picturesque bays and small hidden beaches (I’d love to recommend you some of them, just ask!) I love all kind of arts, especially theatre and visual arts. Also, I enjoy hosting guests from all over the world, sharing experiences and stories with them. I would be pleased to host you during your visit to Barcelona, explain some Barcelona´s history and art´s issues and suggest some cultural events if you are interested in it.
