The Neighborhood

Great walking/biking on island, public transport 1 mile walk from home. Bird watching, sky watching, relaxing on decks with spectacular views of Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge any time of day or eve. GREAT night sky watching, property quite dark and little light pollution from adjacent islands.

15 miles/30 minutes to Key West and Ft. Zachary Taylor Beach, Key West Botanical Gardens, Mallory Square; 20 miles/30 minutes to Bahia Honda State Park with marvelous beaches.

We are 30 minutes from the highly rated Bahia Honda State Park beach.

There are a few restaurants close by *and* we offer meals by prearrangement; breakfast for $15; lunch for $25; dinner for $35. This is comparable to most places, unless you are existing on sandwiches. We also do offer share of a shelf in refrigerator for you too keep snacks and other easy meal items. Travel in the keys is best by car, sad to say. Our public transport is just not very good, yet. We look forward to exploring how we might assist you in having a visit that is all you would like it to be in the Florida Keys.

  • We spent two nights with Midge and Tom. The room was nice, and location is stunning. The bed was too short for Pål, but for Anita it was good. Midge and Tom were very nice people.

Response from Mariposa Retreat @ Earth & Sea Farm:

Thank You for kind words about Mariposa Retreat @ Earth & Sea Farm. It is of value to note that Pal is an extraordinarily tall human and standard size US beds would not be likely to fit his height. Thank You again for your visit.

  • This is a special place run by some wonderful people. We were looking for a weekend get away to unplug and recharge and we found exactly that. Midge and Tom put a lot of themselves into their retreat/farm and into hosting. The more ine delves into the hosts and their operation, the more wonderful and interesting discoveries are uncovered. We would definitely go back

  • Just spent three days at Mariposa and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Its calming, beautiful, very comfortable and surrounded by nature. Midge and Tom are gracious hosts and made us feel right at home. We found the location to be a perfect base to visit Key West to south and Bahia Honda SP (awesome beach), just north. Good eats nearby on RT1. Our relative who lives in KW visited and said that this the "real" Keys. We would absolutely return.

  • We had a very quiet, peaceful stay and felt very comfortable there. Tom and Midge were very kind helpful hosts. The place was a little hard to find is on the edge of wilderness on the rustic side and isolated, but that lends to its quiet scenic beauty.

  • We really didn't want to leave the Earth and Sea Farm. The peace and quiet there was magnificent--often not a single sound could be heard that wasn't natural, i.e., bird song and insects.
Tom and Midge seemed not like strangers we'd only met when we walked in the door, but like acquaintances who welcomed us into their lovely home and made us feel as if they'd been waiting for us to arrive. They accommodated every request we had and freely offered dining and sightseeing suggestions.
We hope to return to the Keys, and if we do, we will definitely plan to stay at the Mariposa Retreat again.

  • Midge and Tom were very gracious hosts. We had a very enjoyable one night stay at their serene and peaceful home. We had an extremely comfortable futon to sleep on, and Midge was kind enough to share some freshly made ginger tea with us that evening. The next morning we awoke to the sight of the beautiful water in the distance. The breakfast that our hosts had laid out for us was splendid. The outdoor shower was quite an enjoyable experience in itself! We cannot say enough nice things about Midge and Tom and their wonderful retreat and if we are ever in Key West again, would not hesitate to stay here!

  • Spent five wonderful days. We really enjoyed the peaceful natural setting next to a wildlife refuge, midway between Key West and Bahia Honda. Tom and Midge were great hosts.

  • Midge and Tom where wonderful hosts. The room was clean and spacious. The home was homey and it was great to have a unique experience at a farm. The only thing I would advise travelers to do is bring snacks. There isn't food readily available in the area, so if you wake up late you might find yourself a bit peckish. Overall a great experience.

Mariposa Retreat @ Earth & Sea Farm is 15 miles/30 minutes from Key West and same from the beautiful Bahia Honda State Park with highly rated beaches. Great biking/walking trail on island, small convenience store on island, other public sport space at Sugarloaf School on island. Our quiet working farm is located on the edge of the Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge and there are thousands of acres of native land on our very small island. Close to Bahia Honda State Park for great water enjoyment and close to Key West for city enjoyment. Although we are a working farm, all efforts are made to prioritize the retreat nature of the land while guests are in residence. Rarely do farm activities begin before 10 am within hearing distance of the guest rooms. FARMSTAY ... please inquire about our advanced FARMSTAY experience. For an additional $54 per day, guests may join the flow of farm life. $54 includes breakfast and lunch and up to 4 hours a day of shared work on the land in support of the farm, most often in the morning, but farm needs sometimes insist afternoons as a better fit. Shared work can include anything from collecting seawater, filling salt pans, cleaning/packaging salt, harvesting cultivated and wild foods, weeding, building, planting, domestic sciences, farmers market and more. FARMSTAY must be requested at time of booking to ensure salt farmers availability during your stay on the land. As suggested by airbnb: 5 things midge would find it difficult to live without; books, ocean water, coconut, a plot of earth to farm, silence Earth & Sea Farm motto ... may all benefit
