The Space

Mi Casa, Su Casa.

Unique hand-built building located on hilltop with fantastic views of New Hampshire and Vermont is located on 60 acres adjacent to large State wildlife preserve and Land Trust property in conservation. Very quiet, safe and perfect for a couple, family or small group of friends. Single bedroom, loft and 4 bunkroom (and futon bed-couch in shared space) are well-appointed with intimacy. This is an off-grid building utilizing solar/wind for electricity and wood heat with amenities (but no t.v.!). Off the beaten path, guests are expected to stay at least several days..... a full library, many outdoor activities and nearby Galusha Hill Farm.

Guests should bring food to cook, outdoor gear/equipment and leave everything else behind. Guests should expect to see the stars, listen to the wind and hear themselves think and talk in peace. This is a special place to be with the ones you love and get back to nature for awhile.

A full day to cross-country ski, mountain bike, hike, organic garden, sunbathe, swim, forage for medicinals, heal from an illness, celebrate something, host an event, write a book, hunt a deer, cook gourmet, have a bonfire, sleep under the stars, practice yoga, play music......

  • Had an amazing getaway weekend with my husband here. It's secluded and private but also has everything you need. The photos do not do this place justice. The upper level is full of light and has awesome views. Great hiking and places to explore in the area - our dog was in heaven. Just what we were looking for. Martin was also an awesome host - very responsive and helpful. Also left just-baked chocolate cookies for us on arrival! Would definitely come back.

  • No words can explain my experience at The Barn Lodge!
My girlfriend and I set out on many adventures with our dogs and we enjoyed every single piece of serenity that filled us day in and day out! The stars and moon lit up our nights as we kept warm by the fire...I felt as tho the more you explored the cabin the more you learned about Martin and his thirst for simple living and adventure!!! No words can describe this fantastic trip that we experienced...Truly unforgettable big thanks to Martin! We will be revisiting this diamond in the ruff very shortly again!!!!

  • Incredible! This may be camp-like conditions in the winter, but over a beautiful August weekend this place was heaven. Never felt any lack of luxury. Beautiful views from every room made everything from washing dishes to going to the bathroom an exciting event. The picture of the bedroom doesn't show how the window is in a slanted roof and is more of a skylight. Incredible view of the stars when sleeping.
Overall, couldn't have asked for more. Martin also suggested a hike that had the most incredible views.
I want more people to go, but want it available when I want to go back! Torn

  • This is a very special place, the location is really beautiful. Unfortunately it is a little rundown now and we found the beds moldy and the kitchen not so clean. If you don't mind you should certainly go!

  • Martin has an amazing place. We stayed in February and there was a ton of snow for a great weekend of snowshoeing. The property and the view is amazing.

The house itself is an engineering marvel, and is filled with great books to browse. The 'getting started' guide really helped us find our way around the place.

There is good food in town nearby at Brown's Bistro. But be sure to pack groceries for the weekend. And if the weather is harsh, make sure to have a car with good tires or all wheel drive.

We look forward to seeing the gardens in the summer.

  • The Barn Lodge is a perfect getaway from the stresses of life. It is in a very rural area and not exactly easily accessable in the middle of winter but once you make it up the hill it's well worth it. Guests should be prepared to live simply with only wood stove for heat and use of minimal electricity as it's solar powered. This is pefect for a couple or family that wants to spend some time reading or playing games by the fire. However, high maintenance people would not do good here!
