Your first-floor suite has a Tennessee bedroom, one bath, a North Carolina bedroom that is off the living room. It has a fireplace, a dining room, and a sofa bed. You have three exterior private entries, a large patio with fire pit, grill, and a hot tub! Hike the TN/NC line on our ridge. Hike into the gorge for rock climbing, swimming, and flumes. Parties and events are not allowed.

The space
You have exclusive use of the private downstairs of our house. There is a large outside patio in front of your home with a large table, chairs, and fire-pit, and a 2-3 person Jacuzzi hot tub. Enjoy meandering the lawns, meadows, forests, and the Watauga River frontage (7 acres). Watauga Lake is a 30-40 minute drive, and several marinas rent boats. We are on the TN / NC line on top of Stone Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest and 35 minutes from Boone, NC. The class IV/VI Watauga River (Watauga Gorge) is 1600 feet in elevation lower than the house.

Your house suite is a private mountaintop getaway for you, your family, and friends. One guest put it on YouTube " Weekend in the mountains with Nancy and Dale." The mountaintop lawns, meadows, patios, maple tree deck, and spacious viewing deck are perfect for your family. Also available to rent is the Mountaintop Vistas Hangar.

If you need more space, you can also book the Mountaintop Vistas Hangar. It has a large kitchen, two baths, a laundry room, a pantry, a large dining area, a conversation area, a game area, a bar, two bedrooms, and many "glamping" possibilities. It has a large double staircase with an arch window, a spiral staircase, a 37' x 14' door that folds back to a large lawn area and mountain view. You could also pitch tents and bring campers. By booking both the house suite and the hangar, you have the whole Mountaintop Vistas. Look at the last photos and read the description to learn more about the hangar space.

Where you’ll be

Sugar Grove, North Carolina, United States

All of the parcels of land on this ridge are owned by family members (100 acres) & friends (15 acres). We are just above Green Valley with families that have been in this area for generations. Many of these neighbors are professionals and have manicured their homes with endless hours of gardening and years of landscaping. We are only 4 miles from the Low Water Bridge on Guy Ford Road that crosses the Watauga River. This is a takeout point as well as a put-in point for kayakers. The Watauga River is a Class IV to VI River depending on rainfall. Boone, NC is 35 minutes away. It is a college town with a flair for the arts. Grandfather Mountain, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Appalachian Trail, and many more attractions are within an hour's drive. Don’t miss the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis only 15 miles, 28 minutes. The Bristol Motor Speedway is 48 miles away, an hour and 15 minutes via scenic mountain roads. The Watauga Winery is 14 miles, 28 minutes. Antique stores and the Old Mill in Trade, TN are 20 miles, 32 minutes. Boone with concerts, antiques, local art, and great nightlife is 20 miles, 35 minutes.

Nancy taught art for 32 years and Dale taught flying for 25. He owned a flight school/aircraft services company and we are now retired. We have a merger family of seven daughters living throughout the USA. We enjoy visiting them and enjoy their visits even more. They all have husbands and children and that's why we've created a complete living area downstairs. We also have large family reunions so we renovated our 50'x60' airplane hangar and it is perfect for large gatherings! Much of the time these are unoccupied and we want to share them with you. We look forward to meeting you and making new friends!

During your stay

We will assist you in locating lakes, rivers, and waterfalls in the area. If you are interested in pottery and learning how to throw on a wheel or hand build, I will be happy to give you private instruction and provide materials for $30. You may take it with you! Group rates available. (We have a large kiln and will bisque fire, glaze and glaze fire your work, $45, then mail it to you, $15.00 postage.) The view from the studio is the North Carolina view.

If you would like to hike into the Watauga Gorge, I will be happy to walk with you into the Gorge. This hike is less than a half-mile hike. In the spring and summer, you will need to bring poison ivy prevention. ( Long pants, long sleeve shirt, high socks, hiking shoes or old tennis shoes, and gloves.) Ropes are in place to assist with descending and then climbing out of the gorge. In the spring, summer, and fall, you may want to swim and enjoy the flumes and waterfalls. Water shoes or old tennis shoes, old cut-off jeans make the rocks easier to handle. In the winter, you can walk along the banks, see undercuts and colossal rock faces as well as seeing the powerful river flumes and falls.

We have a family of 9 goats that roam the mountain top and return to their Hobbit goat house for napping several times a day. They are very friendly and curious. We also have a 2-year-old Border Collie and a 1-year-old Collie mix. They are very friendly. If you bring a pet, they will need a leash until we see how everyone gets along and can put the goats in their paddock if necessary. The pet fee is $20 per pet per night.
