  • A nice little boat, with a surprisingly spacious, comfortable interior, floating in a private marina opposite Midtown Manhattan? What's NOT to like?? I would (and hopefully will) absolutely stay here again. The view of Manhattan is absolutely gorgeous day and (especially) night - you can see from the Chrysler building all the way down to the WTC.
As well as the two bedrooms, the boat has a little kitchen with seating area and a very comfy lounge with sofa and TV. You can also sit up on deck in good weather, which is just delightful. The restroom is tiny and the toilet doesn't deal too well with solids but the yacht club restrooms, which you have access to 24/7 are a few paces away.
It's a five minute ferry ride across the river to the 39th Street ferry terminal, which is expensive at $9 one-way, but there is also a bus that costs $2-$3 and only takes 15 minutes to the Port Authority bus terminal, very close to Times Square. Dean was only a phonecall away, should I have needed him, but everything went so smoothly that I had no need to disturb him.
Overall, a relaxing, scenic and different experience and certainly WAY cheaper than any hotel you might find on or near Manhattan. I loved it!

  • The location of the selkie is truly amazing - a view that is to die for! the area is quiet and very nice but with enough bars and restaurants within a stones throw so no need to go trekking off after a days sight seeing.
The views from the Chart House are wonderful - the food is good too. For the best steaks try ruth and chris's across the road - amazing! Best steaks in the world.

Never having stayed in a boat I was surprised at how snug everything is but enjoyed it nevertheless and would recommend to anyone wanting alternatives to the very expensive hotels in manhattan. Transport links excellent - bus and ferry both very nearby.

  • This was my second stay on Selkie, so hopefully that says it all. Dean is an incredible host, and if he is out of town, then Maria his assistant is literally a phone call away to help. The location offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, and a peaceful retreat from the pace of the city. The ferry is two minutes walk from the marina, and while not cheap ($8.00 each way) it is an incredibly fast and relaxing way in and out of NYC. The bus and train are cheaper, and close by too. The rocking of the boat at night is so peaceful and relaxing. I will definitely book again. This is a unique New York experience, and adventure all in one. Cannot recommend it enough. Kaye

  • Working in manhattan. Very difficult commute. Probably fine for vacation but for work. Not so much. Dean was very responsive. Just not a fit for working in manhattan. Expensive to get back andd forth. My coworkers wanted to mutiny.

  • Staying on 'Selkie' is an absolute must do! I (email hidden)d on and off in Manhattan, and the pace of the city is incredible. But, to be able to experience Manhattan from the Jersey-side of the Hudson River, and to enjoy a little peace and quite, and the breathtaking skyline everyday is a must do for anyone. Dean is a fantastic host, attentive, and helpful. The 'Selkie' has heaps of space, has all the facilities you need, and anything that isn't there is made irrelevant when you make a fresh cup of coffee, sit on deck taking in the view. Catching the Ferry to Manhattan is easy and quick. There are buses, the light rail, plenty of restaurants, an incredible walking path that runs north along the Hudson, and there is also Deans assistant Maria, who is happy to help you out with groceries or other errands. I loved my stay on 'Selkie', highly recommend it to anyway wanting a unique New York Experience, and have already booked again. Thank you Dean!

  • This was not my first visit to NYC, so I thought staying on a boat would be more interesting and fun than staying in a hotel again, and it was! We suffered a week of cold and rain, but on the couple of days of sunshine, we enjoyed drinking wine on the deck, looking across the river to the Manhattan skyline. The boat itself is charming and spacious, and very well equipped, though boat loos require more careful use than normal ones if you don't want to end up with the toilet blocking. There is a train line to NYC just one block walk away, and a weekday ferry half a block away. In just 6minutes you're across the river. Dean and Jane were lovely, very accommodating guests. They even left us some welcome goodies in the fridge. Thanks guys!

  • Dean's boat - Selkie - brought us great joy for several weeks at the end of 2011. She isn't huge and it takes a minimum of 45 minutes to Times Square but the buses run throughout the night and there are train and ferry options too.

The rocking of the boat can be quite trippy but the view of Manhattan is astonishing by day and night.

There is a full kitchen (Selkie's is adequate but cosy) and good showers (Selkie's are ailing) in the yacht club at the edge of the marina.

There (email hidden)ly assortment of characters for neighbours at the marina, mostly liveaboards and yacht club staff.

Excellent wifi and cable and tv on the boat. Dean was reasonable and decent throughout and clearly loves his 1985 motor yacht like an old dog. And now, so do we!
