This apartment literally epitomizes what one expects to find in the old Stone Town of Zanzibar. What a little gem it is! One does need to understand though that houses in Stone Town do not have garden space thus the first floor (entry-level) of these houses is where all the utilities are. In this case, this level houses the water tanks etc. I had been in these houses before so knew what to expect but for someone who does not know it may be a point to bear in mind. Once you reach the first floor though it is like stepping back in time. This house is one of the very few really original Indian buildings left. All the iron stair railings are still original and Brenda has painted them in true to period turqoise blue. The floor tiles are still the original handmade variety. You will find these even outside in the street on the Baraza (stone bench). The ceilings are almost 2-storeys high with the bedroom ceiling still sporting is original paintwork - WOW!! The kitchen has been beautifully restored with teak cupboards and turqoise wall tiles. We found everything we needed for self-catering there. Some very lovely antique Zanzibari furniture everywhere in the flat. The bedroom is huge with 3 Zanzibari beds, rush matting, antique cupboards and of course, the amazing ceiling. The front balcony looks down onto the street and the mosque almost within touching distance. Again all the original wood carving and ironwork still 100% intact. This balcony is so nice and cool and gets you a real flavour of Stone Town. The back balcony is where you spend your life, so to speak, with 2 big Zanzibari benches, tables, mats etc. Every now and then the upstairs neighbours come down the stair-well. Very friendly and helpful people with always a pleasant conversation at hand. The bathroom is absolutely beautiful, once again with the turqoise tiles, a huge shower, beautiful Zanzibar mirror and wooden fretwork window shutters. Very modern and everything working perfectly well. The hot water can be switched on manually although we never used it as the cold water is warm enough and on a hot day very cooling. All in all this is a real home-from-home with lots of good reading material, fans everywhere that work very well and an inviting atmosphere. It is also very close to the beachfront and almost everything you may want to visit within walking distance. Ire met us at the ferry (10 minute walk away) and from then on became our special guardian angel. So very helpful and eager to be of service. He walked with us all over town and found some unusual shopping list items for me too. Called in daily to see if we were OK or needed anything. A real gentlemen! What a great pleasure it was to be spend time with him. Brenda is absolutely fantastic about quick email responses and incredibly helpful as well. You will not be sorry you...
We couldn't have wished for a better host that Ire! We arrived on the Ferry on Saturday morning and were greeted by Ire. The apartment is so perfect! We loved how comfortable we felt, it really did have that homely feeling to it whilst still providing us with a feeling that we were in the hustle and bustle of beautiful Stone Town. The apartment is within walking distance to everything, perfectly located.
Ire! Where can we start? You truly are an amazing person and made us feel so welcome not only in your home but in your town and country. The tour you took us on was an amazing experience and more than we were ever expecting! Stone Town is such a unique, eclectic, pulsating town so thank you for showing us this in such a special way. It's not often that you meet someone so pure, friendly and genuinely in love with their city and its people, you are an example to us all.
Thank you for your help with getting us on the plane home, it was a close call but thanks to you and your knowledge and way with people, we made it!
We will without doubt be back and have already recommended your apartment to friends and family.
Brenda and Ire, we wish you all the happiness and success and we will hopefully be seeing you again soon.
Apewe! Baga Mbagawe! Asante Sana.
Dean & Kendall.
Our experience in Zanzibar was wonderful thanks to Ire and Brenda. Everything in the apartment was exactly like it was pictures and Ire was super accommodating and helpful. Recommend a million times over!
The host canceled this reservation 45 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Sorry I had to cancel this reservation, we discovered too late that we needed it for the family because of ramedan the apartment we share with guests but also live in ourselves if we are both on Zanzibar, there was no way out but as we already wrote each other you will either find something else yourself or I help you, Brenda
Had the most incredible time! The apartment is very spacious and beautifully decorated, and a great space from which to explore Stone Town. Very central location! Ire's orientation walk was really helpful, and he helped us find an open pharmacy at short notice on a Sunday. There's wifi, which works intermittently. Would definitely recommend to others. We'll be back!
This was a fantastic place. Great location, incredibly decorated, and coordinating with Brenda and Ire was easy. Ire met us at the apartment and was extrmely generous with his time. The trip to prisoner island was also well worth it, even in the rain.

We have a big network in East Africa, feel free to ask advise for your stay on Zanzibar. We like to give you the real Zanzibar experience. You can observe life in Stone town from the balcony or just join street life. Drink your tea in the gardens with a view over the sea and meet the friendly Zanzibari.
