About This Listing
This room is comfortably-sized (15ft x 11ft) and tastefully decorated, with a comfortable bed, large closet, bureau, desk and chair. It is perfect for visiting students, interns, or Bay-Area visitors as it is 3/4 of a mile from UC Berkeley Campus, 1/3 mile from Alta Bates Medical Summit, and a 15 minute walk to the Ashby BART station.
The room is upstairs where there is a full bathroom (newly remodeled) and a half bathroom for use of those staying upstairs. There is also a lovely living room with full cable, premium channels included. The house is freshly carpeted (shoes-off home), all the rooms have just been re-painted, and the large downstairs kitchen is also newly remodeled with a welcoming new table for enjoying meals if you wish to be social with others in the house. There are two refrigerators, a washer/dryer for laundry, and wireless internet.
My house manager does a deep cleaning of all the common areas of the house each week, however beyond this, we do not offer maid service. Guests are responsible for the upkeep of their bedrooms during their stay. We hold our guests to a very high standard of cleanliness, and expect that no messes will ever be left behind in any common areas. This means all dishes, pots, pans, etc are to be washed, dried and stored immediately after use. Any crumbs are to be wiped/swept up immediately after cooking/eating. Not 5 minutes after use. Immediately. Please understand this is to maintain a clean atmosphere for all guests, and is therefore an issue that I take very seriously. Guests have been asked to leave for not upholding this standard.
The house it is situated in is a very large, 1880's Victorian just on the fringes of downtown Berkeley. This location is ideal in that you are close enough to walk to EVERYTHING, however just outside the heart of Downtown Berkeley in a peaceful, safe neighborhood! Whole Foods and Berkeley Bowl are two fantastic markets within 4 blocks of the house. It is an easy walk/bike ride to the Berkeley campus, Alta Bates Medical Summit, frequent bus service and BART for you rapid transit needs around the East Bay or into San Francisco (18 minute ride). Also within easy walking distance are all different kinds of restaurants (every ethnic cuisine you could ask for, casual to fine-dining), coffee houses, hiking, parks, nightlife, yoga/pilates/dance studios, salons, ALL kinds of shopping... you name it!
While there is ample street parking available, one challenge in almost all Berkeley neighborhoods is the residential zoning, which only allows for 2-hour parking without a permit. Guests have remedied this issue by going to the DMV to get a temporary permit.
Andrea (Mary's granddaughter) will manage all of the bookings and hosting. Her very friendly dog occasionally comes in for visits.
A friendly effort to save everyone time:
The room is already discounted for weekly stays, and further discounted for monthly stays. The rent is firm and fair, you get what you pay for, and there are no exceptions. Thanks for respecting this!
I am primarily looking to rent to graduate students visiting or doing internships at UC Berkeley, and medical professionals doing internships at Alta Bates. Guests must be mature, clean, and respectful of the privacy and space of others. No heavy drinkers or drug users! We have a no-dish-left-behind policy and expect all guests to maintain the cleanliness of the common areas. Each guest will have his/her own kitchen cupboard and refrigerator space should you wish to keep groceries to cook/prepare food.

This room is for single occupancy only. It is extremely rare (almost never) that exceptions are made, as it is a priority for us to avoid over-crowding our guests. You are welcome to check in with me if you have someone coming to visit, and if I am able to make an exception, there will be a $15 per night charge. Un-planned for, unauthorized guests are never allowed to stay overnight in your room, and guests who do not follow this policy will be asked to move out of the premises immediately.

I think this house it is a great place to live. All is clean, there are clear rules of convivence, the rooms are big and it is close to the University and BART Station. Andrea and her assistant are so polite and they help you in all. I strongly recommend it!
The room is very clean. The host got a two-level beautiful house in a really quiet community. It is close to Walgreens and Berkeley Bowl - two big supermarkets. I would love to recommend this to anyone~
This place is very comfortable and quiet place stay. The room is lovely and spacious. Two grocery stores are in the near vicinity, BART and campus are in walking distance. Definitely recommended.
I had a very pleasant stay at Mary's. The room was nice and clean (I was in the Cozy Room, which features a desk, closet, and comfortable bed). The house is conveniently located in quiet residential neighborhood, close to downtown Berkeley/UCB (a 15-20 min walk) and the Ashby BART station. On the first day, I found chocolates on the desk, and Andrea stayed until 6pm so that I could get in. I would certainly stay there again.

About the Host, Mary
Mary was the owner of this home until she passed peacefully in October 2013. She was a sweet, welcoming 95-year-old woman who loved having guests in her home and was extremely friendly and gracious. Oso, her granddaughter's very friendly dog, often comes in for downstairs-only visits. We continue her airbnb operation to keep her estate alive. Andrea, Mary's granddaughter, manages her affairs and is who you will be in contact with for arrangements.
