The Space

Designed and built by Sam (product designer/sculptor) for our visiting east coast parents, our backyard cottage is modern, stylish, cozy and private. Our family-friendly neighborhood is right on the border of Berkeley and North Oakland, and very convenient to Rockridge shops(10 minute walk), the Berkeley Bowl (7 minutes), and Ashby Bart (5 minutes, if that!). We think you'll find our sunny cottage a clean, comfy welcoming place to stay when you visit Oakland or Berkeley.
The cottage has a queen bed and bathroom with shower. There is a microwave, small fridge and electric teakettle. My mom liked to have the place at a nice toasty 85 degrees, and it's very well insulated.
Sorry No dogs other than ours!
My neighborhood is very family friendly, and there are several nice cafes within a couple blocks (Nomad Cafe and Sweet Adeline) . The cottage has it's own deck and chairs, if you want to bring your coffee back and have it outside under the giant Japanese Maple.
Sam and Mittie are happy to help with suggestions or ideas if you need us, but also happy to give you privacy.

  • Great experience. The host even called me when she saw a car go by, with a confused looking driver. (I had transposed numbers when I entered the information in my calendar.) The house itself was comfortable, larger than anticipated, and filled with nice amenities--cereal, milk, fruit, tea, instant coffee. The bed was comfortable and the small couch perfect for reading in the evening.

  • We had great time at Mittie's place. Although we were there primarily for an event at BerkeleyRep, there is so much else nearby. From Telegraph Avenue, College Ave, the Berkeley Flea Market, and being adjacent to a BART station, we're coming back to Mittie's place.

    Response from Mittie:

Thanks for letting me know! I did notice a couple of them one night in my room too. I will look for standing water as we don't usually have them. Mit

  • Mittie's cottage was the perfect stop for a couple of days. It is just 1 1/2 blocks from BART, making it easy to get around the Bay Area. Cafes and a great market are just a few blocks away. While it is small, there's lots of outdoor space and easily enough room for two. No kitchen, but the microwave, small refrigerator and an electric pot was all we needed.
