Neighborhood highlights

Metaxourghio, meaning “silk mill”, took its name by the factory that was making silk fabric, established in the area, until 1875. Since October 2010, the renovated building houses the Municipal Gallery of Athens (Myllerou 32 & Leonidou, Avdi Square). Metaxourghio is a neighborhood of Athens located north of its historical centre. After a long period of abandonment in the late 20th century, the area is acquiring a reputation as an artistic and fashionable area due to the opening of many art galleries, museums, and “chic” restaurants and café. You can walk through the narrow streets and the occasional cobblestone pedestrian alleys, or just hop-in the nearest metro station, bus or taxi to take you wherever you want to go.
