Cozy room in Victorian home

Neat Victorian house near Central Park in Old Louisville, shared among a few young professionals. We're out of town often, so this is a great place for light & independent travelers. It's comfortable to hang out in, or use as a base to explore from.

Neat Victorian house near Central Park in Old Louisville, shared among a few young professionals. We're out of town often, so this is a great place for light & independent travelers. It's comfortable to hang out in, or use as a base to explore from.

The Space

This is a room within our 130-year old house at the north end of Old Louisville, directly south of the downtown museum district, and few blocks north of Central Park (close to St James Court). The existing house is actually the remaining top two floors of the 3-story building, the 1st floor of which was converted to a bakery in 1922. The total living space is 2000 sqft.

Our place is always undergoing some renovation, but it's 'mostly done,' and quite comfortable. We have a large, fenced back yard, and rooftop deck (best room in the house Spring through Fall). The guest room is private, small but with a 10' ceiling and full-size loft bed; it can accommodate two 'fit' people.

The house is shared among several young professionals (in the art/design and culinary fields) with varying schedules; it is unlikely to see us all at the same time. We also have a few gentle, friendly animals: a feist (small dog, in our portraits) and a Siamese cat.

Nota Bene: we do our best to keep things tidy and put together, but this is our home, and we do have lives within and without -- not all is perfect. We welcome you into our home; please remember that it is that and not a hotel.

Guest Access

There is a desk & reading chair for private use, but if you want to spread out the living room you're welcome to.

The kitchen, bathroom and living room are shared. Kitchen is compact but modern. Bathroom has large shower with dual heads. Living room is large, with piano. Again, it's an old building -- some things are creaky, crooked or missing -- but it's an interesting place.

Interaction with Guests

We co-locate in Chicago (have a second home there), and are away from Louisville as much as 2/3 of the time (pup is with us when we're away). We have a few nice housemates that keep things in order while we're away, but plan on being on your own for the most part.

The Neighborhood

Old Louisville is the most densely populated and diverse neighborhood in Louisville. We have the most intact neighborhood of Victorian homes after New York City. Century-old trees and the park nearby make this a lovely place to walk around.

Getting around

There are plenty of bus lines nearby heading in every direction. Also our neighborhood is very walkable. If you plan on visiting several areas of town, a car or bicycle is advisable though.

Other Things to Note

We have a washing machine for extended stays, but no dryer. You can use the clothesline on the deck if you like.

  • Very cute place. We enjoyed the stay and had fun playing with the cat. The place is also close to Bardstown and Downtown and easy to get to places.

  • Very cool place. The neighborhood can be a little intimidating, especially when you drive up at midnight, but it's actually right near a couple of sweet dive bars and a late-night pizza place which saved our lives. We didn't see Jeff or Bess, but they were very accommodating, and their roommates were as well.

  • We stayed here over the derby weekend for a great price...where can you find accommodations in Louisville on Derby day for less than $100?? The neighborhood was great, a little loud, but what else can you expect being in the city center? The room was comfortable, simple but cozy. The house is very old, so of course everything isn't perfect, but it is charming and unique.

  • Bess, my host, was great. We had the perfect amount of interaction. A meal or two in the kitchen in the beginning, and then mostly passing by and checking in throughout the visit. We had a couple of nice conversations and she was helpful with helping me get around and get some things done.

The actual place where I stayed is accurate from the pictures. The problems I had, others (especially younger guests) might not have. For me, most of the house was cold and uncomfortable. There was nowhere to really lay down on the floor and do my stretches. I've got a lot of physical problems from recent weight loss and it was tough on my body. I'm also frustratingly more susceptible to cold now than ever before since I lost all the fat for padding. Next time, maybe I'd bring a padded mat. The trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night meant climbing down a big wooden ladder from the loft and walking across the entire freezing house to a cold tiled floor bathroom. I slept dressed and wore socks and slippers everywhere. My room was also located right on a busy street corner by a traffic light, so city light came in the window and I heard yelling and cars with the bass thumping every night, much of the night, and a couple of nights, emergency vehicle sirens. It wasn't the best part of town, but I grew up in Baltimore City and was okay with that. Many people told me to "be safe," but everyone was nice and sometimes helpful.

The deck was really nice and the loft area where I slept was really nice. It had a lamp and a nice area to put things I brought up, an extension chord, and heat. The room I stayed in was small, but had the necessary essentials, aside from a carpet to do my stretches.

I don't want this review to sound harsh. This was my experience, and I do have a lot of little travel idiosyncrasies (some of which are still popping up or I'm still learning about). I think a younger person would have been very comfortable there. There was nothing deceptive in the post. It just wasn't great for me. I was in a bind and the price was right and Jeff and Bess helped me in a jam. I am grateful to have had an affordable place to stay. I had access to a kitchen which was also great, because I eat very differently now and cook my own meals as much as possible.

  • Jeff and Bess are great! Lost my wallet in a bus on my way to their place and they were amazingly helpful in doing all and even more in their hands for me to get it back, I couldn't be more thankful for their help. Super nice and authentic people, I was glad to meet them at least the day they were there. The room is exactly what's advertised and the deck is great by the way.

  • A conference weekend visit stay was easy and affordable, and their home is in a great tree-lined neighborhood. Excellent choice for folks who are looking to be in the community. Awesome loft bed - be prepared for a climb - and perfect for pet people - cat and dog at home are friendly critters.
