Marcelo and his family welcome you to enjoy their home in Vidigal! Marcelo speaks good English, and will meet you at the favela entrance to take you to the apartment. He and his family will be next door if you need anything.
The brand-new, top-floor apartment is spacious and well-furnished. There's one large bedroom and bathroom as well as a separate living room and kitchen area. The are five new beds with new mattresses to host your entire group. Also, there's a rooftop terrace on the floor above the apartment that's great for getting some fresh air.
Vidigal has a bohemian vibe and much culture and fun to offer you. With over 15,000 residents, the favela brings together residents from all ethnicities, dialects, and regions of Brazil. Yes, residents are generally low-income, and the community is often neglected by the government. Nonetheless, what people lack in financial wealth, they more than make up for in hospitality, authenticity, and resilience.
There's lots for you to do in and near Vidigal, including:
• Take a walking tour through a favela led by English-speaking resident-guides, catching a breathtaking rooftop view, descending through a maze of alleyways, and learning about favela history, culture, and everyday life
• Check out a Carnaval rehearsal by an official samba group representing the favela
• Rent a surf board and catch some waves at nearby São Conrado beach
• Hike up the Morro Dois Irmãos ("Two Brothers Hill"), and watch the sunrise, overlooking all of Rio
• Grab a chilled beer and salty snack at one of Vidigal's many botecos (bars)
There are public vans and buses (each about $3 BRL) that stop within a 2-minute walk of the apartment. Passing nearly every minute, this public transportation goes to the lively neighborhoods of Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, and Leme.
Vidigal's new 24/7 police protect the community as part of a government program in advance of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics. In reality, tourists are safer in Vidigal than in some of Rio's most "touristy" areas. Unlike other parts of the city, you'll feel a real sense of community in the favelas, where everyone looks out for their neighbors.
You can maximize your safety if you:
• Don't take photos of people without permission
• Never use or buy illegal drugs
• Consume alcohol in moderation
• Listen to your hosts about safety
We had a really great stay at Elliot's place. The little house has an incredible view on Ipanema and the Corcovado, it's located in the bottom of the favela Vidigal, wich means you won't have to walk so much when coming back from the beach.
The neighborhood is totally safe and full of "gringos". You won't have any problems there and feel safer than in a more touristic place.
It's important to know that the neighbor on the left when you're on the rooftop has 5 big barking dogs! So don't plan to spend your night there or you'll wake up all the neighborhood!
This is exactly as described - a functional apartment. Nothing fancy, but everything you need. We thought it was quite fun to experience a bit of the favela lifestyle, but still with super easy commute to the beaches as Leblon and Ipanema. The view from the apartment and the rooftop is perfect. It felt really safe, but that it did everywhere in Rio. Both Elliott and Marcell are super sweet and helpful with everything you need.
The experience was extraordinary. The view was just as amazing as what was depicted on the website. Truly remarkable. The room was nice, spacious, and extremely clean. I felt 100% safe and secure going out during the day or night.
It is just a 15 minute (breathtaking) walk to the beach. Great price, and Elliot was an incredible contact. He answered any questions and seemed to have a personal interests in his guests.
This was a hidden gem. BOOK NOW!
This is a simple but great apartment. Good location, easy to find, great view. We cooked most of our meals at home and the kitchen served all of our needs. The shower is reliably hot (rare for Brazil). Marcelo lives nearby and is very responsive to anything that may come up. A bus stop is right across the street. We enjoyed our time here and would definitely stay here again. Thanks Elliot and Marcelo!
I spent the month of June (2013) in Rio de Janeiro. During my stay, I met other travelers and when they would mention the hostel they were staying in and its location, I kept thinking to myself how much better my location in favela Vidigal was.
The favela apartment is pretty much as central as you can get in the south zone of Rio. And with the buses frequently stopping right outside, getting around was never a problem. Also, because of its great location, it's very easy to walk to some of the main beaches like Leblon and Ipanema (30 minute walk).
Security was never an issue. Traveling solo, I definitely would have had more security concerns if I was staying in another hostel with a bunch of random people. But with the favela apartment, you have your own key to the place, so there's loads of privacy.
Elliot and Marcelo were more than helpful. Pretty much anything you need - from recommendations of sights to see in Rio to a change of towels, they are readily available. I met Elliot at the beginning of my trip and he really helped me settle in to the city. Having stayed in my fair share of hostels in the past, I never got that personal interaction before. It really makes a difference.
Overall, I found favelas to be the essence of culture in Rio de Janeiro. Staying in this apartment provided a positive opportunity I just don't think other hostels could provide simply because of it's centralized location. Not to mention, the price is competitive, security is not an issue, and the hosts are great.
A truly excellent place to spend time in Rio de Janeiro. This is a clean, modern, spacious apartment equipped with cooking facilities, speedy wifi and perhaps most importantly a terrific location. It is based at the bottom of Vidigal close to local shops, amenities and a definite taste of vibrant favela life. There is a small secluded beach 5 mins away, you can reach the central beaches and attractions of Leblon and Ipanema with a 5-10 min bus journey or even a pleasant 20 minute walk. The host Marcelo is extremely friendly and helpful, living close by with his family, he speaks excellent English and is on call for any needs, help or advice you may have. As an experience a stay here really cannot be recommended enough, sandwiched between the 'real' Rio and the major attractions, with all the comforts of modern travel, it is a definite must for anyone visiting Brasil!
I stayed at this place in mid-March, and highly recommend it to other travellers to Rio who want to experience normal life. The place was safe and well lit, and just about 3 minutes from the main avenue, so you can definitely walk in at night with no problems.
The apartment was newly renovated, so it had some really good ammenities. Our host met us at entrance to the favela and walked us in, and even gave us a walking tour of the favela. Our host was great and spoke fluent English, and keen to answer any questions we had.
Don't expect luxury accommodation, but if your idea of travel includes picking up a copy of "Rough Guide to.." then this is your place.
Note, getting to this apartment requires climbing many steps, so unless you can walk with your suitcase or bags in hand, don't expect to roll your luggage up the hill. The apartment isn't too far inside the Favela, so getting around on your own is easy and relatively safe. At no time during my stay did I feel unsafe.
After my visit, we stayed at the Sheraton Rio, which was just a few minutes walk down the street. The experiences were different, and I loved them both. However the WiFi in this apartment was much better than that at the hotel.
The apartment was simple, but nice, clean, and with a great views. With the public transportation we could reach ipanema in less than 15 min from the favela.
Our host Marcelo was attentive all the time.
If u want to stay in an affordable place and experience the real Rio, this is your apartment.
