About This Listing
My self-contained guestroom is a cozy place to spend a few days while enjoying the peaceful surroundings on Gotland during fall and winter. All the comforts of home with WiFi, TV/DVD, tiled shower/WC, and a kitchenette for light meals. Comfy beds!
A self-contained double bedroom on the second floor of our home with separate entry, kitchenette, private shower&WC and your own balcony for morning sunshine. The park with a multitude of wild spring flowers and oaks and hazels is the view from your balcony! The stone wall defining the farmstead dates from the early 1800s.
Our country home has a panoramic view to the south and west overlooking fields and meadows towards Fardume Lake – a designated bird sanctuary. The nearby marshes, grass and hedgerows provide a perfect haven for a multitude of birds and other wildlife like foxes, hares and even the occasional roe deer. Thrill to the call of cranes and geese while enjoying the magnificent sunsets with the tower of medieval Hellvi church silhouetted in the distance.
The Gotlandic countryside will delight you with its spring flowers, beginning with hepatica and wood anemones in April and a crescendo of blooms reaching their peak with over 35 species of orchids in May and June. Enjoy lovely sunny summer days and wonderful autumn colours! Biking is a pleasure on Gotland with rolling fields and forest scenery, roadsides full of wildflowers and small fishing hamlets on stony coasts. I have a collection of vintage bikes that will allow you to explore the local haunts. Avonlea lies near the coast (about 1 km to Valleviken with sandy shallow beach, harbour and restaurant), Rute Stone-oven Bakery and grocery stores in Fårösund (15 km) bike rentals and ferry to Fårö, and Lärbro (10 km) that also has a superb greengrocer. There are many lovely sandy beaches in the neighbourhood as well as magnificent stonestack fields, cafés and a bakery.
I’ll be happy to tell you about all the interesting things you can see on walks/rides in the neighbourhood. Take a walk on the many forest trails or across the meadow to the bird-watching platform at the lake. It's a bird-watcher's paradise!
Bed & Breakfast is an option for those renting our bedroom suite with breakfast served in our dining room or enclosed sun porch. Or else I’ll stock your fridge with breakfast makings and an evening snack if requested at time of booking – special for bird watchers and late night ferry arrivals! Let me know if you require bed linens and towels (extra 10Euro/ person)

Welcome to the lovely serenity of Avonlea!
WiFi, wooden deck with lawn chairs and lake view. Swing set and sandbox for children as well as a picnic table in direct proximity to the balcony staircase, for outdoor dining. I have a grill for your use.
Interaction with Guests
I am pleased to welcome my guests and provide information on local sights and activities as well as lending bicycles for use in the neighbourhood. I will most likely be at home during the time I have guests. I also offer trail riding for experienced riders on my trusty Connemara ponies!
I love the wonderful spacious feeling of the scenery and view over Fardume Lake from my house. The birdlife is a constant source of delight. I hope my guests will enjoy exploring the neighbourhood by bike or perhaps with me on a guided horseback tour (for experienced riders). There are lots of great places to visit, the sea, seastack areas, lunch on a pier by the sea, excellent bathing beaches, a rustic country bakery with delicious pasteries and sandwiches, not to mention a mean cafe latte! There is a local museum depicting life in the area over the past century as well as Bunge Museet, a wonderful open-air museum featuring an extensive collection of historical farmsteads and other buildings from Northern Gotland. There are a several excellent dining venues, one just a 15 min walk away by the harbour in Valleviken (Sjökrogen) and the others within 10 km (Fabriken Furillen, Bungenäs). Why not pay a visit to Fårö, the island just across the sound from Fårösund, home to the Bergman Centre and numerous sandy beaches and seastack wonders?
There is regular bus service from Visby on line 20 which frequents Rute several times daily, stopping at Kauparve, or Rute church and once daily via Valleviken on its way to Fårösund. I would be happy to meet you at the bus by prior arrangement. There is ample parking space. If arriving at Visby airport there is a bus service into Visby several times daily where you can make connections to Bus # 20 in the direction of Slite, Rute and Fårösund. If you wish to rent a car you can do so at the airport or in Visby or else I can put you in contact or reserve a good used car from Carinas car hire in Fårösund (at very reasonable daily or weekly rates).

We made a super last minute trip and were delighted that Luella was able to accommodate us. Despite some early confusion and lost messages, (note, no reception on the ferry!) we were able to get settled into the lovely apartment. Beautiful countryside for exploring, it was everything we could have asked for. Thanks!
Our time at Avonlea was beyond wonderful. Luella was welcoming from start to finish. She was a wealth of information and provuded much printed information on Gotland and areas of interest We stayed in the studio which was clean, well equipped, and comfortable. We had just a great time we wanted to stay longer. We plan to return.
Luella was amazing from the first contact to the last. She is an incredible woman and her energy is infectious. My wife and I loved staying at Avonlea and were sad we had to leave after just one night. The apartment was clean and wonderful, breakfast was delicious, and to be able to sit and watch her horses in the field was so relaxing. And don't forget Clover, her sweet border collie is a beauty. We hope to return again soon!
Avonlea is a lovely place to stay and Luella very friendly and hospitable. She took us out, lent us bikes and even did our washing! Gotland is interesting and very peaceful.
Hi Gabi, Thanks for your kind words, it was a pleasure having you to visit. The jam was made from blueberries I picked on the island in Fardume lake last summer, so a VERY local product! You cook it with a spice bag including lemon peel, cinnamon sticks and cloves. The honey was also produced locally. So happy you enjoyed your stay and thank you for your generous presents.
We stayed at Avonlea for about a week and really enjoyed our stay ! The apartment was clean and has everything you need. Surroundings are beautiful. Luella was very kind and helpful, with great tips to visit the Island. We couldn't have had a better first experience with Airbnb !

About the Host, Luella
I am a Canadian who's lived on the beautiful island of Gotland for the past 35 years. Alongside running my Bed and Breakfast I teach English as a home language and also work as a free-lance translator from Swedish to English. My passion is my Connemara ponies and horseback-riding. I am happy to offer assistance to foreign guests so that they can discover the treasures Gotland has on offer: historical, scenic and cultural. My home is my castle and it is a pleasure to share the lovely peaceful pastoral scenery with my visitors.
