Steve and Melinda have created a peaceful and restorative retreat in what I believe to be the best part of the Big Island. This is an organic, permaculture farm with a huge, lovely home featuring every comfort one could want. It even has an AMAZING library of fascinating books--so you don't even need to bring your own! Everything from permaculture to philosophy to fiction to political theory. Someone is well-read!
The decor is calm and inviting, with plenty of comfort and warmth. I loved the asian influences, and the warm paint colors that engender a feeling of peace and contentment.
I loved waking up early and watching the sun push the mountain's shadow further up the mountain, bathing the beaches below in warm light. Kealakekua Bay and the south Kona coast are absolutely beautiful, and the entire front of the house has windows and a balcony on which to relax on a very comfortable indo-style couch.
The kitchen is very well appointed, with cast-iron pans (not toxic non-stick), a gas range, full-sized fridge with freezer, and even a french press and coffee grinder for coffee. There are some shared items in the community pantry, and lovely house-made jams with exotic fruits to purchase. There is also a full-sized washer and dryer, so that you can bring fewer clothes with you.
Since no pesticides are used on the property, one can rest assured of being in a clean, eco-friendly haven. Not far from the South Kona Fruit Stand (don't miss!) and a grocery store that carries lots of organic food. South Kona has a strong organic consciousness, with many of the small farmers cultivating food in a sustainable way.
We loved the tasting tour that we took with Steve, and tasted fruit and veggies from far-flung reaches of the globe, all with medicinal or nutritional benefits that we'd never heard of! Also, if you take the tour (one of the offerings on their menu of services), make sure to ask if you can try a fresh macadamia nut. It will blow your mind. Our little one enjoyed the animals on the farm, especially the ducks and cats.
I can't wait to return to this tranquil retreat, that is so lovingly tended and thoughtfully appointed.
That's a really nice house on a hill. The farm is so cute that our kids and elders had 2 happy days here. The view is perfect.
This was a great place to stay. Spacious, everything you would expect in a modern home. Amenities like outdoor shower and fresh produce a nice bonus. Location great as a staging area for almost any activity on the island while having many great activities nearby.
Wow, this place was so serene. Steve and Melinda were thoughtful and accommodating hosts, they truly love their retreat and it is represented in the energy that is felt in the home. The wrap around balcony had stunning views of the ocean, the meditation room was a perfect space for a spiritual experience. We had the entire home and the space was luxurious. We were able to sample the macadamia nuts, drank some goat and sheeps milk, soooooo delicious.
Steve and the Team were very responsive hosts and passionately shared about the mission and vision of their lovely eco farm on The Big Island. Expect your stay to be full of adventure at this unique getaway.
We had a great time at the Honaunau EcoRetreat Farm. The hosts made us feel welcome. The place was clean and comfortable. My kids enjoyed playing with the cats. At night the frogs sing!
This is a great location for exploring South Kona area -- it is near "Two Step" some of the best snorkeling on the Island that you don't need a boat. The hosts recommended great near by coffee shops, bakeries, and restaurants.
The view of the house is awesome! You can both see the ocean and the forest. And there are all kinds of lovely animals around, such as cats, dogs, ducks.
Three bedrooms. The biggest one has king size soft bed. The rest have one full size bed each. And the wifi is fast.
But there is no supply of shampoo and body washer. You have to buy by yourself.
The kitchen is so- so. No microwave. But if you are not so into cooking, it has the basic equipment and two ovens.
The owner is very friendly.
