About this listing
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IN FINNISH LAPLAND – ONCE IN A LIFETIME WINTER WONDERLAND AND HIKING EXPERIENCE – CHANCE TO SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS AND REINDEER FROM YOUR OWN PORCH
Our newly built log cabin is situated in Salla, north-eastern Finland within the PAN Village Oulanka. If you are looking for a calm and peaceful holiday, admire beautiful untouched nature and want to experience the true Finnish Lapland without the fear of bumping into large tourist crowds, this is the place for you! Although way off the beaten track, you can still access the place with relative ease and have all mod cons and services available. There are lots of activities on offer nearby such as husky safaris, reindeer sleigh tours, snowshoe walking, downhill and cross country skiing during winter and fantastic hiking options during summer seasons. Some of the most famous Finnish hiking trails run in close proximity to our cabin. White-water rafting, climbing, canoe trips and fishing are other summer time activities for which the nearby environment is perfect. There is also a reindeer park in the neighbor where you can feed the reindeer around the year. Usually wild reindeer also end up walking around close to the cabin so keep your camera within reach at all times! Salla is a perfect spot to witness the Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis. Also, in August and September, the changing of the leaves sets the countryside ablaze with its gorgeous red, brown and golden colors which is therefore perhaps the best time for hiking. Fellow travelers have shared their experiences of PAN Village Oulanka at Tripadvisor where you can check what they have to say about the place.
The cabin is located 3 km from the downhill slopes at Sallatunturi, 13km from Salla village with its grocery and liquor stores, 100km from the nearest airport at Kuusamo and 910km from the capital Helsinki. The easiest way to arrive is to fly to either Kuusamo (KAO) or Rovaniemi (RVN) and rent a car. Flybe/Finnair, SAS and Norwegian operate regular flights. Ebookers usually offer really good value for money vehicle deals.
The cabin area is 104m2 (1120 sq ft) and contains 3 bedrooms with 2 single beds each (sleeps 6). The spacious open plan, living room and dining area combined with a beautiful fireplace and floor heating offers you real comfort. The cabin is equipped with two large bathrooms and two toilets. You also have your own sauna! Furthermore, you have an own washing machine and tumble dryer plus an airing cupboard to dry your wet gear. Amenities include a HD quality flat screen television with satellite receiver, a DVD player and free wireless internet. The spacious open-plan kitchen is fitted with all modern appliances, such as a large fridge, ceramic cooking field, oven-microwave-combination, coffee maker, water kettle, toaster, dishwasher and tableware for 10 people.
Own car highly recommended. Can be rented for instance at both Kuusamo (KAO) and Rovaniemi (RVN) airports.
A cabin instruction manual can be found at the premises.
Ulf sent us clear information in advance about the workings of this lovely cottage in a town that trademarks itself as "the middle of nowhere." It is actually in a beautiful area and we greatly enjoyed our stay. The cottage was all that was advertised , comfortable, and just what we needed. I highly recommend it.
We are really faszinated! The cabin was really perfect for the relaxing days we wished to spend in the wilderness. It is the second to the last house in the Pan Village Oulanka (just a few houses with great distance to eachother). We did not see almost anybody in these 9 days. Just wilderness around us!
Lovely interior, great infrastucture with 3 separate bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one big big livingroom with kitchen and a nice sauna.
The cabin is appr. 3 km from Sallatunturin - a very uncommercial ski resort, we war almost alone on the piste. About 10 km from the very very small village Salla where we could buy anything we needed.
5 Minutes walk from the cabin there is the Reindeerpark, where we could arrange everything we wished to do (get snowshoes, forest skies, husky, reindeer and snowmobile trips).
We did the 5 h snowmobile trip, we was very lucky to have just one young other couple and the guide with us, so we had reallly speed and fun (I don´t recommend to book a trip with more than 5 snowmobiles, there are always people in the group called "brakes" ;) ). The husky trip was one of the greates we did, but minimum 4 hours must be to be able to enjoy.
We had really unforgettable days at Ulf´s cabinand could spend one month more there. Ulf was really helpful, had perfect communication and we got organised tips and todos, was great even we don´t met personally.
There is no better place to stay in Salla.
We had a wonderful week in Lapland, and this log cabin has played for much !
Like many, we didn't meet Ulf but he was easily contactable.
The cabin was exactly like on the pictures and even better. The only thing which is not noticed, is that each cabin are placed side by side by four but it's really not a problem (walls a well isolated and in our case we were almost alone in the PAN Village)
Thanks again for this week !
The perfect place for your Lapland experience! The cabin is outstanding, Ulf is a wonderful host. Sallatunturi is a really good blend of remoteness and a surprisingly good infrastructure. We'd come back any time!
We really enjoyed staying in your cabin. It is a great place to stay for the person interested in some winter activities like cross-country or alpine skiing, snowboarding and tracking northern lights. The location is very convenient because it's not far from Sallatunturi ski resort, reindeer park and the city of Salla. We had no problems with finding it and accommodating. The cabin itself has plenty of room for everyone. The cabin manual and the maps of skiing trails and slopes in english were very helpful as well. The only issue we had was the sauna manual which was only in finnish. But some google translating and common sense did the trick. Everything else is awesome and I'm not sure that anything else needs improvement. Great cabin, quick-to-reply and responsible host, uncrowded and quite place in the middle of snowhere. What else does a Lapland traveller need? My family wishes you lots of guests to visit your cabin regurarly. I hope we'll visit it once again next year.
As expected - a beautiful home and a wonderful host. Thanks very much Ulf. All the best.
