A lovely, private and very clean cottage with all amenities for a comfortable and peaceful stay. Quiet, and cool the year around, we are a 20 minute walk from the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden and well situated for touring to Waipio Valley, Akaka Falls, Volcano National Park and many other destinations in the area. Come see the real Hawaii.... lush, tropical, friendly and far less touristy than the Kona side. We would love to have you come and stay! Please take a look at our reviews.

The space

Our country estate is in Onomea, 6 miles north of Hilo, on 5 tropical acres with garden and ocean views. The Garden Suite at Onomea is a private cottage with views of flowering royal Poinciana trees, mango, lychee, mountain apple trees, monkeypod trees, and coconut palms. The most repeated description by our guests is 'peaceful'. The suite has a studio layout... bedroom, living room and kitchenette all in one very ample space, and a lovely stone-tiled bath with very high ceilings and gorgeous light. The kitchenette is equipped with an array of cooking appliances for simple cooking needs, and a full sized refrigerator. In lieu of a stove there is a gas barbecue on the covered lanai. The queen bed sleeps two and there is a twin bed that sleeps one additional. Our road is one of the loveliest in all of Hawaii. Artists frequently come to paint it! Within walking distance is the Hawaii Tropical Botanic Gardens. A short hike from the Botanic Garden down the old donkey trail is Onomea Bay. Fed by a mountain stream, this is a truly beautiful coastal spot with a serene majesty. By car, we are less than 8 miles to the 400+ foot Akaka Falls State Park and equi-distant from Volcano National Park to the south and Waipio Valley to the north.... Just two of many other attractions in the area.

Sleeps two in queen bed and 1 additional in a twin bed. Private entry in a stand alone building. (cottage suite)

Guest access

You are welcome to ramble around nearly everywhere around our five acre property. When you arrive, we'll usually greet you and show you in. If we cannot be home for your arrival, we'll leave the door unlocked for you so you can come at any time after check in time. We are situated along the single-lane Old Onomea Road... one of the prettiest roads on the island. Lined with royal palms along it's entire length and barely traveled on by cars, it makes for a lovely to walk to the nearby Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden at Onomea Bay, or to one of the local roadside lunch stands.

Interaction with guests

I will usually meet with my guests upon arrival and made suggestions for touring and dining. We have lots of local knowledge about places to go and how best to make the best of your time here, whether you're staying just a few days or for a month.

Other things to note

Temperatures range, year-round, from about 65 to 84. Our warmest months are from mid August to mid November but even then, the suite is very comfortable all day long. With some advance notice we will bring in a portable air conditioner if you absolutely must have air conditioning. But.... we've never had guests who felt it was necessary.

Randall's private studio was perfect for our needs. Location-wise, we were looking for a space a bit out of town to get a really peaceful experience. It's about 6-7 miles out of the main part of Hilo, so it wasn't too difficult to go out to get a meal. The space is also very close to waterfalls and other beautiful landscapes. As for the studio itself, it was very spacious for two, with an AWESOME bathroom. I'm definitely going to be dreaming about that open plan shower! Randall was very responsive to my messages, and had quite a few food recommendations as well as places to visit. Thanks Randall for letting us use your space as a hub for our adventures!

Randall's home is a real hidden gem. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay and would have stayed longer if we didn't have other commitments. Gorgeous secluded property in a great location. The space was really clean and the bed is super comfortable. The setting was absolutely divine, so relaxing and quiet, yet only a short drive to Hilo and other great places. Highly recommend!!!

We stayed at five different Airbnbs during our two weeks in Hawai'i, and Randall's was by far the best. We especially loved the soaring ceilings, beautiful bathroom, and private lanai looking out onto the garden and trees. The accommodations were hotel-level. Randall's place is very close to Hilo (but you must rent a car if you are visiting this part of Big Island), and yet the home felt perfectly secluded and private. Each night we were lulled to sleep by the sounds of the garden and coqui. Randall was very easy to communicate with and provided everything we could need. Thanks so much, Randall!

Randall was amazing!! And his property is divine. So tranquil and picturesque. The space is exactly what you need, very well appointed with every little detail carefully considered. We spent countless hours on our patio, reading, eating, and just staring into nature. Highly recommended!!!
