The Space

In our back yard there is a small cottage which was originally built as an art studio. It has a full size (pillowtop) bed, shower, and bar sink. There is a small frig and a microwave, but because of its size it is probably best suited for coming home in the evening and relaxing after a hard day of body surfing and having had dinner in one of the local restaurants. The living space is 10x12 plus the bathroom.

There is a very sweet black lab in the yard named Sasha. She never barks, and is never intrusive. However, she enjoys being petted if you happen to suffer from dog deprivation.

We are a rural neighborhood, so you can expect the sound of roosters in the morning plus the occasional dog (none of the dogs are nuisance barkers).

We are walking distance from downtown Makawao, with a number of interesting shops and restaurants. Makawao is about 20 minutes from the airport, on the side of Haleakala. It is a good place to get a head start for the Haleakala crater or a trip to Hana.

Wi-fi is available in the unit, and since I am in the main house I can hopefully provide anything you are missing as well as directions to wherever. You are welcome to use the washer and dryer.

Free parking is available anywhere on the front lawn.

  • The cabin was very charming, bright and breezy, and it was perfect for our needs. The location was ideal for the Haleakala peak sunrise as well as the quaint towns of Makawao and Paia.

It was well-equipped with a coffee-maker which is a lifesaver for coffee-dependent Melbournians. Not to mention the Hawaiian coffee that was provided in the cabin - it was heaven. There were juices in the fridge as well as bottled water which was very handy.

Our hosts Karl and Rosa have been really lovely with giving us tips around Maui. Sasha is the sweetest dog ever! She never barked at us and she's very friendly although she liked her naps and kept to herself most of the time.

Highly recommended for exploring Central/Upcountry Maui!

  • The bed was cosy and a fridge, microwave and coffee machine are provided. If you want to cook for yourself, this tiny cabin is not suitable, but Karl also states this in his description. For preparing breakfast, a toaster and a water cooker would have been great (otherwise you have to get creative with the microwave...). And to complete the wishlist: maybe a small radio? Wifi unfortunately was not reliable at all. Location is good, you are on top of crater Haleakala in only an hour and it is also a good starting point for the road to Hana. I recommend the tiny cabin, if you are looking for a reasonably priced place to sleep and not want to spend much time there during the day, as it is really small (as the name says) and rather hot inside, when the sun is shining.

  • karl's quiet, little art studio was the perfect spot for our second trip to maui. it's super bright and airy, making it feel much larger than it actually is. with windows on every wall, you can always get a good breeze in there. the bed is fairly comfortable and high enough that you can stash your suitcases under it. there's a hanging rack for clothing, and plenty of shelves to settle your things in while you stay. also, karl gives you access to the washer/dryer which is an awesome perk! it's an affordable, sweet cottage in a typical maui neighborhood, with a lot of privacy, which is precisely what we wanted.
we chose to stay upcountry in makawao because it's a fantastic launching spot for any destination on the island. compared to staying in some of the more touristy areas on the other side of the island, you're already by the hana highway, which saves a lot of time, if that's your destination for the day. we were able to leave around 10 am and leisurely drove the entire loop, stopping many times along the road. from karl's art studio, you can quickly make it to the beach, or drive about fifteen minutes down the road for breakfast in paia. mana, the natural, health food store in paia, is an excellent place to stock up on groceries, or grab snacks for your day trips.
makawao itself has some cute botiques and a great bakery, the t. komodo store. there are lots of artists and art studios in town as well as a few antique shops and restaurants.
karl is wonderful, kind and friendly. he'll happily give recommendations of places to eat or things to see. the main house is on the road and the art studio is set back in a private backyard. i loved being able to pet and play with sasha, the gentle black lab who likes to keep watch on karl's porch. and don't worry if you're not an animal person, sasha will happily stay right where she is and leave you be.
we stayed for just under a week and would love to return to the studio the next time hawaii calls us back- hopefully soon!

  • Loved this tiny little cabin. Just big enough for two. Quiet and cozy. :)

  • My husband and I enjoyed our 4-night stay at the "tiny cabin." It was clean and cozy -- great for those interested in small space living. The location was quiet, and convenient to the north shore and Haleakala. Thanks Karl, Rosa, and Sasha!

  • Rosa and Karl were great hosts. Karl was out of town when we arrived, but Rosa made sure everything was good when we arrived. The fresh flowers and pineapple in the room were a great touch. The cabin was simple and small, but the price was right and it was clean. The temperature was very comfortable. The neighborhood was quiet (except the chickens-hahaha). Karl let us use his washer/dryer which was nice. We mainly used the cabin for sleeping. We didn't spend much time there during the day. I would rent from Karl again.

  • The tiny cabin was wonderful. When I arrived there in the evening everything was prepared for me and I felt immediately at home. It is a perfect place for exploring Maui. Everything isn't that far away. Should I ever come back to Maui I will definately try staying here again.

  • What a great find! It's cosy, yes, but included everything we needed for our week long stay on Maui. Makawao is a delightful little town, and the cabin was an easy walking distance from several restaurants. Karl and Rosa were delightful hosts that did everything they could to make our trip memorable, complete with a cheerful welcoming note when we arrived. We had a small issue with the curtain rod spring breaking in the shower, but it was resolved complete with new shower curtain (after getting our permission to enter the cabin) before we were back that day.
And for all other dog people, Sasha the lab was friendly and greeted us with a tail wag daily. Definitely helped us get through our pet withdrawals.
We'd stay here again in a heartbeat! Mahalo!

  • Oh my where do I begin!! We had a wonderful stay here. Karl is so friendly warm and hospitable. He did an awesome job of making us feel comfortable relaxed and at home. He made sure that all of our needs were met. He even gave us a pineapple and some fresh bananas :) .Rose also made us feel right at home she gave us some great suggestions of places to eat and areas of the island to visit. This was super helpful because we tried her suggestions and our trip turned out amazing!! We also loved his dog Sasha. She's the sweetest dog ever. So quiet calm and friendly just perfect in my opinion.

As for the cabin. It is so cute and cozy. It has a very tropical feel to it which was wonderful. The cabin is small which is why it's called the tiny cabin. But what I loved about the place is that although small the space was used very well and it was spacious enough for my husband and I. The cabin was neat and clean with nice paintings on the wall. There was even a little kitchen type area that had a mini fridge and microwave. Which was perfect for a basic breakfast and sandwiches ect.. All in all I just love this little cabin and would certainly stay here again. Karl is a great host :)

  • We had a lovely stay at Karl's cabin. Beautiful Sasha greeted us each day and was extremely friendly. The cabin is clean, comfortable & cosy. We had juice in the fridge, coffee and tea. Also provided were toiletries such as soap. Every night in Maui it rained (rainy season) and there was a leak by the door which Karl was looking to fix when we left. Karl was kind enough to allow us to wash our clothes using the washing machine since we were half way through our stay in Hawaii and running out of clean things to wear. Karls partner Rose was warm and friendly towards us and we looked forward to her smiles. The village was about 10 mins from the cabin and we enjoyed eating at most of the restaurants there. Both Karl & Rose were full of information to help our stay in Maui. My partner and I fell in love with Maui and we will be back!

Still ticking along after all these years- going to work five days a week as a psychologist here in Maui. I like to go to India a couple of times a year, I think mainly just to appreciate more what we have in Maui. My major passion is playing bluegrass music with others, although I cool it when I am hosting folks at the house.
