You want the dream house ? That's the one !
Just a little down the road outside Sneem (5min drive), The Valley of the Hare is in a peaceful place surrounded by nature. Everything is so calm, with gorgeous landscapes, population mostly sheeps.
Inside the house, it's just perfect. Spacious clean rooms w/ really chic decorations, a living with comfy sofas, a fireplace and a bay window. There's also a gigantic american style kitchen w/ all the utensils we could wish for (we're french after all). Groceries were left in the fridge, heat was on with a fire ready to be lit.
We used the master bedroom which has a really comfortable bed with a view over the valley, so nice to wake up with this view !
We haven't had the possibility to meet Susan since we came late and left early, but she made everything to provide all the informations to come and kept in touch when we needed.
We clearly recommend The Valley of the Hare. We will definitely come back, for a longer stay this time, there's a lot to do in the Kerry County :)
Words cannot describe how lovely this home is!
It is the most thoughtful, well presented, well equipped accommodation I have ever stayed in - and I have stayed in a few!
The location is remote, yet the township of Sneem is only ten minutes away.
There is plenty to see on the Ring of Kerry, but be warned once you enter the Valley of the Hare you will not want to leave.
The Valley of the Hare was truly a magnificent experience. After a harrowing ride in the rain from Dublin and a relatively straightforward ride up the country road from Sneem, upon opening the cattle gate we came to what looked like a quaint cottage on a rise. We entered and found a thoroughly updated 21st century farm house with every feature we could desire. Walking around taking in the house, every room elicited smiles of amazement. The upstairs bedroom, reached by a lovely spiral stairway, looked out over the valley to the eastern hills and beyond, a beautiful scene. The en-suite bath was larger than our hotel room in Dublin and had a huge soaking tub and a shower. The large downstairs bedroom and bath, in the original 200 to 400 year old farmhouse was comparable and both provided all the privacy we could want. The third bedroom, which we didn't use also had its own bath. The kitchen was large enough for multiple cooks, fully-stocked and delightful, (email hidden) stove and multiple ovens, large fridge, microwave, etc. Susan had thoughtfully provided sufficient supplies for our first morning's breakfast. The lounge with its comfy couches, wood stove and satellite TV, had an immense sliding glass door through which we had a panoramic view of the valley, the Beara Peninsula and Kenmare River. The place was unbelievable.
We arrived in lambing season and were greeted by a sweet sheepdog and the sight and sound of ewes busily grazing to keep up with the feeding demands of their cavorting lambs. The bleating of the lambs and sheep was the only sign of the farmer who came by in early morning and evening to provide supplemental feed (it was a cold and late spring) for the flock. We were able to get up close with the sheep and lambs on the Sneem-Fermoyle hiking trail which was literally right outside the door. The well-marked trail provided an excellent perspective of the countryside, with foot-bridges crossing several of the tributaries of the Sneem river.
We went to the village of Sneem and stopped for a pleasant lunch at Breens Riverside Cafe. We discovered that the proprietors (the Breens) had owned the farmhouse where we were staying and grown up there, a family with eight children in about a third of the space we were staying in. There was also a small grocery and a butcher in the village where we were able to obtain all our cooking needs without excessive travel.
The Valley of the Hare provided a peaceful and serene break from our hectic touring schedule. And it is appropriately named, we saw several hares running in the fields. if you're looking for a relaxing respite or home base where you can take the time to paint a watercolor, relax with a good book, or take an invigorating hike in the countryside, it can't be beat. Many thanks to Susan for being such a pleasant and responsive host.
It's difficult to write a review of Valley of the Hare without falling into hyperbole: very genuinely, I doubt there's a better house, better location or better host anywhere on Airbnb. The house is stunning. From the outside, it looks like a typical, traditional farmhouse and outbuildings, but it's completely modern inside with a huge amount of care, thought and creativity put into every detail. Very comfortable and very stylish, but in an understated way and, even though it's been modernised, there's still a traditional 'cottage' feel to the interior with loads of natural light and natural elements throughout it. The most striking feature, though, is the view: completely clear, unspoilt view across the valley towards Kenmare Bay. You could easily spend hours just watching the sky and light change. Aside from the house itself, the hosts are really great: charming, generous, relaxed – just genuinely nice people. All in all, this is a unique and special house, and we're already looking forward to returning.
The valley of the hare was an extraordinary Accomodation with stunning views of snowcapped mountains in the distance and sheep greeting you in the yard. Not only are the sheep there to say hi we were lucky enough to be greeted by a hare on the drive in! The kitchen is equipped to host an edition of Iron Chef. The property is part of a hiking loop that passes through the town of Sneem which is a valuable part of staying at this place. the bathtubs were an exquisite way to end the day before a lucious night of sleep.
Great place to go to relax and get away from it all. Lovely luxury accommodation with all mod cons. Close to lots of beautiful areas to explore and great walking trails.
If it were a hotel the Valley of the Hare would merit top star rating. Just 4 miles from the town of Sneem on the famed ring of Kerry road it is accessed by a paved, classically winding Irish country road. Do not expect a highway! When reached, the superb view of the surrounding valley and hillsides offers a wonderful feeling of freedom and being at one with nature. The home itself is fitted and furnished to the highest standard, with master bedroom/bathroom upstairs and two full size bedrooms/bathrooms at ground level. To compliment each there are fluffy white bathrobes, a generous supply of quality linen/towels and brand name toiletries. The main home area has a superbly fitted, well provisioned, large kitchen with double stove/oven, large US style fridge /freezer and also has a full sized dining room with an 8 place dining table and chairs. The cathedral roofed living room is fitted with a large woodstove and has a panoramic window view of Kenmare bay and the Beara peninsula on the horizon.
This is upland hill farming country with sheep and cattle in the valley below. Our visit was in February. So, from the comfort of our well centrally heated home, with the Atlantic wind blowing over our rooftop, we watched the local farmer and his young son on their ‘quad’ doing their supplemental feeding round of the livestock. We even had curious sheep come and observe us from the front patio.
Hosts Susan and Rafe live a few hundred yards away and are unobtrusively helpful and attentive. Their experienced ‘customer comes first’ approach is reflected in the generous range of catering and domestic materials provided – from orange juice and cereals, though first few days supply of fresh eggs/bacon, tea /coffee and bread to domestic cleaning materials – even offering to bring the Sunday newspapers from nearby Sneem – with its charming people, its good dining, shops and pubs and easy access to the soul - soothing majesty of Kerry.
If you wish to get away from it all and want a really quality residence then the Valley of the Hare is for you.
