• location

The location is ideal for guests looking to experience inner city living, Bali style.

Hidden down a secluded lane, but within Bali’s premiere tourist district, the Shikumen are located in fine company; fine dining, fine shopping and fine night-life. It is walking distance to many great restaurants and venues, and a 5 minute taxi-ride to places such as ku de ta, “Eat Street”, Potato Head etc.

“Shikumen Villa is a unique and special experience. There are a lot of Villa's in Seminyak but not many that have such a nice attention to detail. The location is perfect, protected from the hustle and bustle yet still right in the centre of Seminyak. “ Jono, Flipkey

• style
Shikumen houses originated in China in the mid 1800′s, and featured large stone gateways opening onto enclosed courtyards, and a mixture of Eastern and Western architecture. With the advancing pace of development, Shikumen are fast disappearing in mainland China, and are the inspiration behind the Shikumen Villa.
The antique houses used in the Shikumen Villa were originally from Java, which has a significant Chinese population, and the original structure, comprising a traditional Chinese square arch, is constructed from century old teak wood. The distinctive design for the Shikumen features the use of large gateways and shaded courtyards, and the interior design incorporates rich reds, crisp whites and natural wood. The lighting has been built into colourful traditional bird cages hung from bamboo racks, creating a gentle ambience. All these elements are skilfully blended with modern conveniences and contemporary aesthetics to create a comfortable and elegant environment.

“Tucked away, gorgeous room, and private pool area - spacy, balinese and lovely - really enjoyed these little boutique villas & suites.” guest, agoda

Theatre Set and Costume Designer, Production Manager, Teacher and other random stuff.
We have lived in Bali now for 6 years having moved here from Australia in 2007 with our youngest son. In Australia, my husband Grahame was a highly acclaimed Theatre Director and Writer whilst I was a successful Theatre Set and Costume Designer, Tour Manager and Producer among other things. Having reached the peak in our respective careers and with our eldest son married and living in Sydney, it was time for a new (email hidden) and a new challenge. We thought we had renovated our dream home in Fremantle and I had my dream job as Cultural Development Officer for the City of Fremantle. But then we had another dream. I was suddenly offered a job to teach at a school in Bali so we leaped at the opportunity and packed and moved to Bali with 6 weeks notice to the surprise of friends and family. We were ready to immerse ourselves into a new culture whilst at the same time we hoped to indulge in some of the delights this tropical island has to offer. We built our Bali dream home and that was meant to be that. Our plan wasn't to end up working in the hospitality industry running a small boutique hotel but that is what we have ended up doing. As a professional set designer I feel like I have set the stage again, but this time it is for a tropical holiday for our guests to indulge all of their senses in the sights, sounds, tastes and tropical delights this beautiful island has to offer. Grahame on the other hand is still directing and writing, but now he is directing numerous workers, housekeepers, cooks, gardeners, tradesmen and maintenance people in the task of providing a relaxing tropical holiday so that this time your dream can come true. The photo I've chosen is from when we were trekking in the North Sumatra jungle in May 2013. It was our return visit after our first visit 22 years ago, when we went there to make a play about Orangutans called "Visiting the Relatives". The first time we were there we had our first son with us who was 12 at the time. Strange but true to say, on our second visit we had our 2nd son with us who was also 12 years old at the time. And that's also how long we've been coming and going to Bali. We feel very fortunate to be able to call Bali home and join our Bali friends and family in welcoming you to this special island.
