The Space

NOTE: I am on it! Unlike other people on Air B&B, I usually respond to people within the hour during the day. That being said, please check your inbox within the hour after writing me!!

This 450 sq. foot studio apartment is above a quirky art space in the Mission called the S.F. Institute of Possibility. The apartment is completely separate and has its own entrance. It's just for Air B&B, no one lives there. There is no clutter or junk everywhere. The apartment is new, everything is clean. The room has a nice queen-sized bed, a futon that folds into another queen bed, a gas heater, 9 windows, tons of light, a small water closet (toilet) room, bathtub, a kitchenette and is tastefully decorated. It also has a large Swoon art piece on the wall. There are all manner of implements for cooking and such, as well as a Mac computer with wireless. The space is a block from Valencia Street and hundreds of shops and restaurants, cafes and culture. 3 blocks from the 24th street BART. There are 2 bikes you can borrow and there is usually something fun and interesting happening downstairs: drawing class, yoga, Dungeons and Dragons, cooking classes and on weekends there are either dinners or art shows. Never parties or loud music. Shows end at 10, dinners end at 11.

I’m always around and live a few blocks away, so check in is always easy. There is a digital keypad for entry into the building, you never need keys.

Pay parking lot just around the corner that always has spots open, $10 a day.

24th Street BART 3 blocks away.

Valencia corridor 1 block away. 20 restaurants within 4 blocks. 300 within 10 blocks.

There’s always fun, friendly people around and always something going on.

Beautiful garden in the backyard with a fire pit. But you can't be loud back there past 10. For real, there are tons of kids in our neighbors back yards.

Kids are awesome and love the space and love the downstairs space. Very kid friendly.

The apartment can comfortably hold 4 adults but if you need more sleeping space there is nothing but space downstairs and we can make a deal for sure. Also air mattress available.

There are parks a few blocks away, shops, cafes, clubs, pirate stores and various other exciting Mission things. 15 minutes to Embarcadero by BART.

Ritual Coffee included for your stay and a bag to take home (we’re the owners!)

We are happy to leave you alone but if you ask we can tell you cool things to do and places to go and stuff like that. We know all the good restaurants and all the good deals and stuff.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • I stayed in the studio the night before our wedding at the attached space. It was comfortable and the perfect place to get ready with my wedding party, not to mention how beautiful all the bright colors look in the photos. Its much larger than it looks in photos or feels when you first walk in. You also can't hear what's going on downstairs, it's surprisingly soundproof. Would definitely recommend!

  • John was very easy to connect with and accessible throughout our stay. We were even greeted with a fresh line-caught salmon dinner that he'd saved for us from an event earlier in the day! We couldn't have felt more welcome. As artists ourselves, our group thought the apartment had a great vibe and we loved being connected to the art space below. Geographically, the location is perfect for exploring the Mission and very close to any transportation you might need. Would happily stay again in this fun, quirky space!

  • John's place was great, truly one of a kind, unique space, which added nicely to our SF experience. John (email hidden) even calling to double check that everything was to our satisfaction.

  • An awesome location and a pretty inspiring space. We would definitely stay here again. The evening events that are held in the art space below the apartment added a great vibe to the place, without disturbing our peace. I would highly recommend this apartment to anyone who appreciates something that is a little bit different- it had the perfect amount of quirk for my liking!

  • My wife and I really enjoyed staying here. Excellent location to explore the Mission. Super convenient to get in and out of the city as well. Very tidy and comfortable. The event space below looks amazing! Hope to join in for a dinner party next time we're in town. John was great… easy and clear communication the whole time. Hassle free.

  • Our stay in the mission studio was lovely and just as expected. It's a great hub for exploring the city and the space is so unique. It comes equipped with a full kitchen and all the supplies you would need to cook your own meals if you choose to do so. The claw foot tub is a nice touch, and there is a shower in the downstairs space if you aren't up for a bath. The best part, a beautiful piece by swoon!

  • The studio was as described...a fun, artsy space... the neighborhood was full of life and there were several eateries to choose from all within easy walking distance. BART was three blocks away so it was easy to get anywhere in the city from there. We were met by Robin, a friend of John's, and she was friendly and helpful and made sure we had everything we needed.

My education was done outside of the classroom.
Showman. I work with shows and suchlike.
I'm a 46 year old Showman from San Francisco. I live in the Castro, a diverse and tolerant neighborhood in the City of Art and Innovation. I'm married to Eileen, the owner of Ritual Coffee Roasters. We have a daughter, Alice. She is very small. The three of us travel together and we always leave bags of coffee wherever we go. We are neat, clean and reasonable people. We are both originally from the NY area. I am an author and the managing director of the San Francisco Institute of Possibility. Upon finding out that Air B&B had more heads on pillows in NYC December 2012, I swooned. A strike in the heart of the empire!!!! Viva la Revoluiotion!!!
