This unique area is for Nature Lovers! Monkeys galore and one of the best beaches in Costa Rica!
This much loved home is located across the street from Zancudo Beach, a 5 kilometer long sandy beach peninsula. Good for surfing, swimming, fishing and beach combing.
This 2 bedroom home is tucked away off the main road but still only a 3 minute walk to the beach. Great waves, beach-combing, monkey and sloth (email hidden)us many types of butterflies and birds. Restaurants and market are within a 5 minute walk.
The house comes with high speed Internet and ceiling fans and AC throughout. There is also Satellite TV. A private, mango tree lined driveway takes you to this magical abode.
Zancudo Beach is a small town and off the beaten path. No high rises here. Lots of restaurants and bars and grocery stores. Wildlife abounds with monkeys and birds and more.
The population is a mix of Ticos, Gringos and Europeans.
Nearby is the famous Osa Peninsula and Pavones surf break.
Zancudo is well known as a world class fishing port.
I can't really explain why, but our stay at the Jungle Beach House in Zancudo was magical. My husband and I stayed for a month and everyday was special. We would begin each day watching the morning butterfly show as we enjoyed our coffee on the front porch. Each day, at low tide, we walked on what felt like a 5 mile long private beach. In the afternoon, once again comfortably seated on the front porch, we would listen to the waves and wait for the monkeys to join us. Mozart, the friendly local Toucan even came for a visit one day.
The house was comfortable and VERY private. The WIFI was great, the TV even showed old movies in English with subtitles. The kitchen was well supplied and we ate many delicious meals at home. The blender was my favorite thing as I enjoyed a daily fruit smoothie for lunch made with delicious fresh local fruit.
Margaret was wonderful and told us about all the local treasures - Ellie who baked wonderful bagels, bread and amazing cinnamon buns, Emilio, the fruit and vegetable man who came twice a week, the egg man and the many local eateries. We particularly enjoyed the Walnut Chicken at Restaurant Tranquillo just up the road.
Everyone we met was friendly, relaxed and enjoying life. Even after a month it was hard to leave and we are already planning our next visit.
We just wrapped up one fabulous, unforgettable experience staying in Zancudo at Margaret's Jungle Beach House and cannot say enough kind words!
The house is clean and fresh with beach and butterfly décor. Kitchen is a wonderful place to fix your fresh fruit and vegetables that you might pick up from the Thursday produce truck. All the dishes, kitchen utensils, and cooking appliances (coffee maker, toaster, blender) one could want for a night in or a morning breakfast (as one reviewer said: they have incredibly fresh eggs here). The big bed was super comfy, although my husband and I only occupied the one bedroom so I can't confirm the "comfy factor" of the second bedroom, but I'm sure it's great as well.
I won't lie, we basically lived on the porch. It is so private, so peaceful, it was hard to actually ever want to "start" our day and leave the house! A great way to read, relax in the hammock, have a beer, listen to the birds, watch the butterflies, enjoy the salamanders and iguanas...and nap, of course! You can hear the waves when you sit outside...
There is a TV if you should so choose to stay in, we sometimes did when the mosquitos started their night shift, and Jungle Beach House has quite a few cable channels (we felt guilty every time we turned it on, the sound of nature outside and knowing we were inside...:-(. LOL!
Margaret was always available when we dialed her number and through the many emails I sent, she knows quite a few folks in town and was always able to point us in the right direction. She has lived in Zancudo for several years and has some great connections. Very friendly and knowledgeable lady...thank you so much Margaret for everything!
Tres Amigos (small carryout) is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. I cannot stress this enough. Things are a bit spread out in Zancudo and this was such a blessing to have a place where you can pick up snacks and food for the week.
There is a lovely lady who bakes just down the road as well. Her name is Ellie at Olas Bravas, look her up and you won't be disappointed (to die for cinnamon rolls!) And she delivers!
Also, two restaurant we frequented: Sol y Mar (bit of a trek, worth the beach view) and Coloso del Mar (very close and screened in, out of the path of the nighttime mosquitoes). Both excellent food and excellent atmosphere!
Anyways, hands down, we would pick Jungle Beach House for any future visit to Zancudo. The house= beautiful. People of Zancudo= so friendly. The beach= gorgeous and as other reviewers have said, always empty (there is a public beach access right across the street).
You will not be disappointed!
Margaret and her jungle beach house are awesome! The house was everything we needed and in a fantastic location. It is so thoroughly surrounded by jungle that we felt as if it had grown up out of the ground with the trees around it. We were looking forward to seeing a few monkeys, but were surprised at how many swung through the yard and how often we saw them (almost daily!). The windows are well screened so there were very few bugs inside and the fans kept the temperature perfect while sleeping at night. We didn't expect to find a place so remote in Costa Rica, and then once there, we felt like we were in such a peaceful, off the beaten path type place that we were surprised at how well everything operated (the internet was great!). As wonderful as the jungle surroundings are, the beach is just a very short walk away. We rarely saw others while we were out and enjoyed walking up and down the coast. We really can't say enough about what a fabulous hostess Margaret is; she alone is worth staying at her place in Zancudo.
We spent the month of June 2013 in this jungle beach house and saying our stay was extraordinary doesn’t even begin to come close.
The house is quaint and clean and cool and is set off the road, tucked away in between papaya trees and native plants like a private tropical jungle garden. The shaded porch has a hammock and chairs and is perfect for lazy afternoons and evenings and a great place to watch wildlife. We saw all sorts of wildlife on the property including the resident iguanas, three types of monkeys, hawks and exotic birds, all sorts of lizards and toads and butterflies. Even a domesticated toucan came by one morning to say hi! The locals call him Mozart and he landed on the chair on the front porch and we got to spend some time feeding him fruit.
While the house is back from the road, the beach is not far and the crashing waves can be heard at high tide just as loud as if it were thunder. If you see any other person then Playa Zancudo is considered crowded. Visit the beach on a clear night to catch falling stars and phosphorescent waves. We also loved finding pretty shells and the hermit crabs that sometimes occupy them. Swimming is great at low tide, and you can surf or boogie board the beach breaks. The water is warm and the sunsets are epic. It’s a rustic beach but we prefer it that way.
Near the house is the convenient Mini Super Tres Amigos tienda where they sell cold beer and groceries, and the owners were very helpful and the prices fair. Twice a week there is a produce truck that stops at out front of the store and we loved buying fresh fruits and veggies from them. The house includes a blender and we had fresh fruit smoothies almost every morning! There is even a guy that will deliver fresh eggs to your door once a week. These eggs are so fresh and the yolks are so orange and delicious that they may just ruin supermarket eggs for you forever! We cooked a lot during our visit and lived off the local produce as much as possible. While they might not have everything you are used to, it’s easy to eat cheaply and healthfully while in Zancudo.
Margaret is the caretaker and is a lovely sweet person and so helpful! She knows all the people and places you might want to acquaint yourself with while visiting. She was very attentive to making sure our stay was smooth. It’s such a small town and everyone is so nice that we can honestly say that we left as friends and not just tourists. If you are looking for genuine people and simple honest beach living, then look no further. Getting to know the locals was one of the highlights and after being there for a month we like to think we made some lasting friendships.
My family and I enjoyed staying at Margaret's jungle house in Zancudo. The convenient access to the beach and nearby mini super tres amigos was great. I especially liked reading in the hammock on the front porch and watching fireflies in the lawn after dark.
The Jungle Beach House was AMAZING! Zancudo is a magical place in Costa Rica. The beach was nearly always empty, there were monkeys, lizards, birds, toads, and toucans to be seen. The house is large, with a big kitchen and high ceilings. Hot water in the shower if you want it and ceiling fans throughout the house to help keep it breezy. The front porch has rocking chairs and a hammock, with only views of the jungle all around and the sound of the beach in the distance. AND there are phosphorescents in the ocean here! So be sure to venture out to the ocean at low tide (best when there's no moon) to see the magic all around you. Margaret and Ronny were super helpful with anything we needed. We will definitely be back to Zancudo some day. Such a peaceful place.
Margaret's jungle beach was the best! The house was nestled back from the main road, giving us privacy and quiet. We lived on the roomy front porch. From there we saw a family of white-faced monkeys going through our yard, treetop to treetop. We could always hear the howler monkeys a short distance away and see them with a short, easy walk. We saw the glowing-blue Morpho butterfly flutter through every morning. The two Iguanas, one that lived at the end of the walkway, the other, at the side of the house were always entertaining to watch. We named them "The Guardians", ever watchful. We would wake pleasantly each morning to the squawking of Green Parrots (doesn't sound appealing but it was). The beach was 200-300 yards from the house, secluded and very beautiful. Since we didn't have a rental, the nearby tienda and restaurants were very convenient.
Our stay was totally enjoyable in every way.
Margaret was an angel, so helpful with everything and when our arrival plans changed because of illness, her words of "we'll get you here one way or another" were so reassuring. She is our "Pura Vida" friend.
My husband and I spent the first 10 days of our honeymoon in Costa Rica staying at this great house in the beautiful, remote village of Zancudo. It was the perfect escape for us! The house is on the "jungle side" of the peninsula and the public beach is right across the street so to us it was the best of both worlds. When I say "public beach"I need to say that everytime we went to the beach there was Maybe one or two other people on the natural, undisturbed beach as far as you could see in either direction. The house is on the more quite end of the town... about a mile in a half down is the center of town with more bars and restaurants. The house was just as it appears in the photos and is very comfortable. It is tucked back a bit so it feels very private but is only a short walk or bike ride to a grocery store and other bars and restaurants. We rented bikes while we were there, which got us around Zancudo fine... but I would suggest planning on renting a 4-wheeler (which a lot of locals use) or a car if you are going to want to explore a bit further. The roads are very rocky and can be rough to ride a bike on in certain areas but for us it was fine. We were able to get things from the store to cook a lot of meals at our house, but there is also great options for eating out! Breakfast: Bar Tranquilo's Huevos Rancheros or Colosso Del Mar's Blackberry Crepes w/ fresh fruit! Colosso del Mar had great food and Sol Y Mar was the best place to go get a beer and also has great food....get the nachos! We did not do anything but relax, explore the town on bikes, lay on the beach and drink beer...which was wonderful! But if you are looking for more then you will find it.... there are a lot of opportunities for excursions such as fishing, canopying, horseback riding, visiting national parks, etc.... The area is great because you really can do as much or as little as you want! Margaret and Ronny were super accomodating and helped us with anything big or small that we asked them about! . They are great people with a beautiful property! Everyone in Zancudo is a big family and everyone is more than willing to help you however they can. Almost all of the wildlife we witnessed during our entire stay in Costa Rica was on this property, but most from our front porch! Howler and white-faced monkeys, lots of different lizards and eguanias, more varities of birds then you can imagine, same with random insects, frogs, baby crocodiles(never saw mama).....it was amazing and there are trails on the property for you to explore total nature without going to far! We were there the first part of April and the weather and bugs were not bad at all. We had an absolutely wonderful experience at the jungle beach house in Zancudo and we are already planning our next trip! Zancudo is really a hidden gem and we feel really lucky to have found it, experienced it, and made so many friends there! Go stay here and you will never want to leave!
I arrived on a rainy December 1st and found Margaret standing by the road to show me where to turn. We had been in touch by phone and she had given good directions on the best route to take on the muddy rainy season roads. I found the house to be as advertised and comfortable. Just as in the photos, the house appears to be situated in the middle of a tropical garden surrounded by jungle. But it is not isolated--there are neighbors on two sides about 100 yds. away although you have to know exactly where to look to know they are there. Wildlife is plentiful. I recorded 97 species of birds. Monkeys, both howler and white-faced are common. I spent two months and am already planning to return.
Although Zancudo , and the Jungle House itself, are off the beaten path, we had no trouble finding our house. Margaret, the property manager, gave us excellent directions and had a sign out to mark the road that leads to the property.
Margaret is also our neighbour, so she is always available if you need anything. The house was clean when we arrived and Margaret had a fresh bouguet in a vase sitting on the dining room table. Within a couple of days of our arrival, she and her partner had three of the ceiling fans replaced with new ones, so we found the climate very agreeable.
If that is not enough for you, both the air conditioners in the bedrooms work great, so relief from the heat is never that far away. Considering that you also have a beautiful beach a short walk away.
This beach can be quite rough, but we soon realized that the thing to do was time our swim according to the tide charts. We would go for our daily swim about an hour after the time given for low tide. The water at that time was great for swimming and we felt safe.
I learned not to go anywhere without my camera. as there were always photo ops. If it wasn't the White Faced Capuchins, it was a beautiful butterfly or bird, or even the elusive Squirrel Monkeys from time to time.
Even in the off season, there a few great restaurants within walking distance as well as a little store. We had a guy deliver eggs and cheese., and I loved taking my book and camera to wait for Emilio at the side of the road to buy produce twice a week.
We made friends with a woman who baked bread, bagels, cinnamon buns, etc. So as you can see, we were not wanting for much!
The house is very comfortable and the internet works great. We loved the deck and the yard and the shower even had hot water for those rare times you felt you needed it.
We would recommend this house to anyone. Margaret is a wonderful person; ever willing to help or supply a little something you may need. She didn't rest until she knew the washing machine was working fine for us. Margaret is very personable and is always coming up with an idea or information to make your stay more enjoyable .She even came to our house to let our dogs out a number of times one day when we made a day trip to Golfito. I think we will be coming back during the high season.
