Situated in the heart of the enchanting medieval village of Montemerano, in one of the most picturesque and little-known areas of Tuscany, this 15th-Century studio-apartment (listed in the national register of historic dwellings) offers a truly unique experience. The fully-renovated, 1st-floor apartment that boasts an original, oak-beamed ceiling, looks out onto the main square and bell-tower of the village. It has a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom and main living/dining area with a comfortable sofa-bed for two. There is a mezzanine above the kitchen with a double bed.
Montemerano is in the province of Grosseto in southern Tuscany. The historical centre is renowned for having one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany, Piazza del Castello (where the apartment is located). The elegant Church of St. George is decorated with 15th-Century frescoes and valuable religious artworks.
The village has 5 excellent restaurants catering for all budgets, a pizzeria, an outdoor café (the village meeting place), as well as a butcher, bakery and two small supermarkets.
The village is situated in the heart of the Etruscan territory, just 150km from Rome. 3km from the village are the popular hot springs of Saturnia with its natural waterfall and rock pools (free access) with their mineral-rich, body-temperature water. At a similar distance you can find the River Albegna (into which the thermal waters flow) in a slightly wilder context. The unspoilt countryside is full of opportunities for walks, trekking and horse riding. Within a radius of 20km, there is a plethora of breathtaking towns and villages (Pitigliano, Sovana, Sorano, Manciano, Saturnia, Roccalbegna) and historical/archeological sites, which include impressive Etrusco-Roman ruins and tombs. In addition, lake, sea and mountain are not far away with Lake Bolsena, attractive beaches near the spectacular Argentario peninsular and Mount Amiata all within a 40-minute drive of Montemerano.
(We rent from Easter to All Saints long weekend every year)
Other Things to Note
Free parking is available 150m meters away from the apartment. The walk is up hill.
Montemerano è un borgo medievale davvero "incantato". Abbiamo trascorso alcuni giorni in completo relax, visitando alcune belle località vicine e soprattutto godendoci a pieno le famose acque termali.
What a wonderful experience. Our hosts, Lorenzo and his father Francesco made us welcome from the start. Francesco met us when we arrived, then took us on a short drive to see the nearby sites. He suggested day trips and restaurants he thought we may enjoy (and we did) and even drew maps. Lorenzo went the extra mile by translating an accident report when I had a fender-bender.
The apartment was located in the most picturesque part of an enchanting hill village recently chosen as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.
I would recommend Lorenzo and Francesco's place to anyone who wants to get away. It was perfect.
Lorenzo was very helpful and everything in the house & outside was like in pictures (or even better). Such a beautiful village and nice host, I recommend it to everyone ! :)
Incredible apartment in the heart of Montemerano!! It is even better than shown on the pictures. Lorenzo and his dad were warm and helpful hosts. We can definitely recommend staying there and would be glad to come back one time..
Giulia & Blaise
Lorenzo and his father Francesco were very kind, supportive and welcoming hosts. Communication was easy.
The apartment is ideally located in the very heart of Montemerano and is absolutely beautiful, like a picture has come to life.
Is was very tidy and the sleeping couch is very comfortable - we really loved it! Regarding the internet connection you should know that it only works at one spot.
We booked the place for 8 nights but only stayed 4 which has nothing to do with Lorenzo and his family or the apartment. It is - as I said - very beautiful and truly a piece of heaven. But we underestimated the distances to other places in the Maremma and how exhausting it can be to drive car in the hills. It was bad planning of us, especially as we are more the kind of city people. If you're looking for a more "rustic" part of the Toscana were you can avoid the crazy tourist groups this is the perfect place.
Our son advised us to go to Montemerano and to this appartment. He was there last year and returned excited. So we went and our experience is even better then we expected. Fransesco and Allison are very good, helpful and charming people. Montemerano is a beautiful small village. And the appartment is very good on a wonderful square.
We will advise everyone visiting Toscane to go to Montemerano and to this lovely couple.
Hi! I'm an Italo-Australian born to this land but have lived in various countries and travelled extensively. Now I live to share my part of the world with others. I have the opportunity to welcome people into my childhood house and am only so happy to do so when I see the faces of my guests as they enter! I have a passion for history and the local territory with its captivating Etruscan ruins, astonishing medieval towns and pristine, wild countryside; and look forward to unravelling the local secrets and marvels with my guests.
