About this listing

Situated in the heart of the enchanting medieval village of Montemerano, in one of the most picturesque and little-known areas of Tuscany, this 15th-Century studio-apartment (listed in the national register of historic dwellings) offers a truly unique experience. The fully-renovated, 1st-floor apartment that boasts an original, oak-beamed ceiling, looks out onto the main square and bell-tower of the village. It has a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom and main living/dining area with a comfortable sofa-bed for two. There is a mezzanine above the kitchen with a double bed.
Montemerano is in the province of Grosseto in southern Tuscany. The historical centre is renowned for having one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany, Piazza del Castello (where the apartment is located). The elegant Church of St. George is decorated with 15th-Century frescoes and valuable religious artworks.
The village has 5 excellent restaurants catering for all budgets, a pizzeria, an outdoor café (the village meeting place), as well as a butcher, bakery and two small supermarkets.
The village is situated in the heart of the Etruscan territory, just 150km from Rome. 3km from the village are the popular hot springs of Saturnia with its natural waterfall and rock pools (free access) with their mineral-rich, body-temperature water. At a similar distance you can find the River Albegna (into which the thermal waters flow) in a slightly wilder context. The unspoilt countryside is full of opportunities for walks, trekking and horse riding. Within a radius of 20km, there is a plethora of breathtaking towns and villages (Pitigliano, Sovana, Sorano, Manciano, Saturnia, Roccalbegna) and historical/archeological sites, which include impressive Etrusco-Roman ruins and tombs. In addition, lake, sea and mountain are not far away with Lake Bolsena, attractive beaches near the spectacular Argentario peninsular and Mount Amiata all within a 40-minute drive of Montemerano.
(We rent from Easter to All Saints long weekend every year)
Other Things to Note
Free parking is available 150m meters away from the apartment. The walk is up hill.
