Enchanting medieval apartment

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Piazza del Castello, Montemerano, Tuscany 58014, Italy

The Space

Situated in the heart of the enchanting medieval village of Montemerano, in one of the most picturesque and little-known areas of Tuscany, this 15th-Century studio-apartment (listed in the national register of historic dwellings) offers a truly unique experience. The fully-renovated, 1st-floor apartment that boasts an original, oak-beamed ceiling, looks out onto the main square and bell-tower of the village. It has a well-equipped kitchen, bathroom and main living/dining area with a comfortable sofa-bed for two. There is a mezzanine above the kitchen with a double bed.

Montemerano is in the province of Grosseto in southern Tuscany. The historical centre is renowned for having one of the most beautiful squares in Tuscany, Piazza del Castello (where the apartment is located). The elegant Church of St. George is decorated with 15th-Century frescoes and valuable religious artworks.

The village has 5 excellent restaurants catering for all budgets, a pizzeria, an outdoor café (the village meeting place), as well as a butcher, bakery and two small supermarkets.
The village is situated in the heart of the Etruscan territory, just 150km from Rome. 3km from the village are the popular hot springs of Saturnia with its natural waterfall and rock pools (free access) with their mineral-rich, body-temperature water. At a similar distance you can find the River Albegna (into which the thermal waters flow) in a slightly wilder context. The unspoilt countryside is full of opportunities for walks, trekking and horse riding. Within a radius of 20km, there is a plethora of breathtaking towns and villages (Pitigliano, Sovana, Sorano, Manciano, Saturnia, Roccalbegna) and historical/archeological sites, which include impressive Etrusco-Roman ruins and tombs. In addition, lake, sea and mountain are not far away with Lake Bolsena, attractive beaches near the spectacular Argentario peninsular and Mount Amiata all within a 40-minute drive of Montemerano.

  • I still can't believe this place is real! It's like some old fairytale. Lorenzo is an amazing host. The apartment is very comfortable. We tasted the local food, explored the area and relaxed at Saturnia Mill (email hidden) was great! We hope we'll have another opportunity to visit this magical place.

  • Perfect AirBnB experience. Lorenzo is a thoughtful person with a true gift of hosting. He was very intentional about providing privacy, but was also warm and totally available to us throughout our stay. He was gracious enough to help us bring our bags in and familarize us with the town on arrival. All of his recommendations were wonderful in that they exposed us to unique and culturally rich aspects of Italy. The region is a true gem: untouched by mass tourism and full of adventure and beauty. The apartment is warm and cozy, situated ideally at the center of the best piazza in town. Very clean and esthetically pleasing. Our only regret is that we did not stay here longer as it was the most magical area we've ever been to. I was blown away by the whole experience and hope to cross paths with Lorenzo again one day. I highly recommend this listing and Lorenzo!

  • Even if Lorenzo wasn't able to greet us, his friend Jacopo (Johnny) took great care of us. The place was impeccable, well equipped and just amazing. The communication between Lorenzo and I was easy and very rapid, I never had to wait very long for Lorenzo to answer my calls or emails. In my whole trip to Italy, this was the most amazing, the place, the welcome and every litle detail made this the best. Lorenzo, thank you!!!

  • We really enjoyed our stay at Lorenzo's beautiful medieval apartment. The apartment is very clean and decorated in a very appealing style. My daughters in particular loved the loft bedroom! The location of the apartment is absolutely fantastic. We kept thinking we were in a dream. Montemerano and the surrounding environment must be one of the most beautiful places on earth! If you love history, culture, good food, wine, and meeting lovely people, then this is the place for you! Lorenzo and his family are very generous hosts and they are very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the area. Lorenzo is a lovely person and provided us with a fantastic list of things to do. We could have stayed a month! I would highly recommend staying at the "Enchanting Medieval Apartment". We hope to meet Lorenzo and his family again and return to this magical part of the world one day.

  • Wow! The apartment and the town of Montemerano could not have been any more perfect. This is an absolute must stay for your visit to Italy. Our host was truly wonderful, welcoming us into town at the car park, helping with our bags, and giving a guided tour once we had settled in. The apartment is large and modern inside with absolute charm and attention to detail. The village square below your window is the clean, romantic, flower filled, quiet corner of Tuscany you are dreaming of. Restaurants were quaint and idealic. The streets you have to yourself, without tourist hordes or souvenir shops. The little patisserie and coffee shops down the lanes were welcoming and full of deliciousness. Easy driving to the tourist spots of Siena, San Gimignano, Florence, and the great drives to villages through Chianti. We were so sad to leave, and can't wait to go back. Thank you Thank you!

  • We are totally in love with Maremma, and especially with Montemerano! It's a very cute and pitoresk town with everything you need nearby. It felt like being in a movie with all the beautiful houses and flowers everywhere. The appartment is perfectly situated in the old centre of the town and provides you a perfect view from your bed. Also (and I find this very important) it's very nicely decoraded, with handmade furniture and art from all over the world. This is in one line with the owner who is a very special Italian man, who speakes perfectly English and is very openminded. We were very lucky to meet him and his friends, without him our stay would not have been the same. There are so many nice places to visit, lots of special old towns but also beautiful nature everywhere. We do strongly suggest to read some information about the Etruskans of witch you can find many traces. We came with public transportation which is do-able but if you want to be flexible it's better to go by car. The thermal baths (Saturnia) are nearby, if you like walks it's a 45 min walk. You also should defenitly visit the bar/restaurant Franchino Garage (10 min by car), in Poderi di Montemerano, with beautiful garden and view: Perfect food.. and if you are lucky the owner Gianluca will play some music. Just perfect!!

  • We had a wonderful time in Montemerano the apartment is well appointed and located in a beautiful well kept square.
We were extremely fotunate to have Lorenzo's father as a guide, a lovely man with extremely good knowledge of the area, he took us too many places that we would never have found by ourselves whilst regaling us with many interesting historic facts and stories.
He advised us of the best restaurants and even took us out to a local farm for dinner.
The apartment is well located to explore the surrounding area and Saturnia thermal waterfalls just a couple of kilometres down the hill is the perfect place in the evenings to relax and wind down before visiting the fantastic local restaurants!
