Cozy post and beam artist cottage near charming Freeport Harbor, on the Harraseeket River, in South Freeport, Maine. 2 plus bedrooms, 1.5 bath, plus an seasonal outdoor shower, country kitchen. The cottage is nestled in a quiet neighborhood about a mile from the harbor and 2 miles from the outlets and LL Bean in downtown Freeport. Sunny back deck with picnic table. Quiet woodsy location. Close enough to Portland and Casco Bay for day-trips, but away from the crowds. Also convenient to Brunswick and Bowdoin College. Walk down to the town landing and working waterfront, a short drive to public beaches at Winslow Park and Wolf Neck on Casco Bay and watch the boats parade by.
The cottage is my home and comes fully furnished, including linens and kitchen items.
Daysails on my small sloop or trips to Admiral Peary's home on Eagle Island can be arranged.
Bring your bikes and kayaks. Great restaurants and heaps of art galleries in the area. Summer music series at LL Bean and year-round happenings in nearby Portland, Brunswick and the Maine Mid-Coast.
Guests have access to the laundry in the basement but it should be noted that the "concierge cave" is also my workshop, studio and office space and I will have to access this space from time to time during your stay. I usually only access it between 9am and 7pm unless there is an emergency and I usually call or text before I show up. It hasn't been a problem with guests before and it's usually a great time for guests to take advantage of my local knowledge, we try to keep you away from the tourist traps!
Interaction with Guests
I usually stay at my girlfriend Pam's place when guests are in town or on one of the boats so I am easily accessible and have been known to drag guests out on the water from time to time, Casco Bay is such a great place but it is not very easily accessed for folks from out of town who are not necessarily in the know. So bottom line I'm usually around if you need me. I am a licensed captain and I work out on the water so if I am not available there are friends and neighbors who are!
It's a sleepy little neighborhood just around the corner from all the mayhem and shopping that the Freeport outlets and LL Bean are famous for!
You can get here by train from Boston and a short cab ride (2 miles) for those of you who don't have a private vehicle. You can also rent cars out of Brunswick and Portland. Zip Car and other car sharing options are available at Bowdoin College in Brunswick and the airport in Portland is 15-20 minutes away.
Other Things to Note
Casco Bay is a wonderful place best kept secret in the Portland area, ask me and I will let you know some unique way to check out the bay!
Common sense is a must, don't burn the place down, don't sink her. Please be respectful of the neighbors and the neighborhood and my home. Smoking is permitted at LL Bean, somewhere, I think? I look forward to giving you a great reference! If you want to have a party, please let me know so I can invite the neighbors, we love parties. The small intimate types are better and we know where to go for more excitement, Bubba's is a great place to dance! Live music, let me know, I can steer you to what ever suites your fancy.
We really enjoyed our stay at Chris's house and hope to make a return trip in the future. The house is easily accessible from I-295 and there's a large outlet-type shopping area a few minutes away - yet it still retains the peace and solitude of a country house. There's plenty of cookware, space, and the house is well kept. Chris was attentive and asked if we needed anything on a couple of occasions but otherwise left us to enjoy our stay. Thanks Chris!
Our stay in Freeport was great! The house is beautiful. Chris is very friendly (and patient, we arrived much later than planned because of Thanksgiving traffic paired with snow), had great recommendations, and made us feel at home. We felt very welcome, and were delighted to have found such a great place to stay for a holiday weekend. Pet-friendly, too!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Freeport! Laver's Keep is a perfect get-away location that has easy access to any (grocery/ outlet stores/ restaurants) shopping we needed to do.
The home itself is a great combination of cozy and spacious. The dining room table was a great place for the 4 of us to hang out and craft (It seats 6, so we were really able to spread out!). The kitchen was well stocked, and we were able to easily cook all of our meals (except for the lobster roll lunch we went out for).
The sleeping accommodations were very comfortable. There were beautiful skylights in the bedrooms which also had shades which we were able to close when we wanted to sleep in.
Chris was a lovely, accessible host who made it clear that we could contact him for any questions.
This was the perfect location for our relaxing weekend, and we've already put our minds to figuring out when we can get back. Thank you for a lovely visit!
Christ was an outstanding host. He was ready with information about the area. He checked in with us pretty much daily to see if we needed anything, but he was not at all intrusive. He is friendly and enjoyable to be around.
Thanks Pat! I'll send that earing off by the end of the week. So glad you enjoyed your stay and really appreciate you allowing Kelly to continue working on the deck! The weather is coming in but she'll finish the job before the next guests arrive next weekend, thanks again for that!
This house is amazing! And in a very good location. A very peaceful stay. Chris was a good host, he even takes out harbor cruises so you can join in on that. Only complaint was he dropped by Sunday morning without calling or texting first, caught me and my guests off guard. Sorry Chris!
There were two couples that stayed. We had a wonderful time. Chris spent just enough time with us to be very helpful on paces to eat and attractions of things to do. We went on a boat ride with hime and had a wonderful time and meal at the local pier cafe. Food was very good. The accommodations at the house were good, beautiful quiet location. Enjoyed enough that we are considering a vacation there next year.
Chris was incredibly welcoming and helpful, and the house itself is beautiful. It had everything we needed, we just wish we could have stayed longer!
It was an honor to host you and your party and what a pleasant surprise to find you guys were attending Grace and Sam's wedding! Hey did someone in you group leave a small green stylus for an ipad or smart phone? I'll leave it with Deede at Bessie's and let Grace contact you, or get in touch and I'll pop it in the mail.
Fair Winds, Chris

Hi and thanks for checking out my place. A little about me, I call New England home and travel all over for work and play. I am a professional mariner and sail on tugs, tall ships and tour boats throughout New England and have sailed all over the planet. I've thrown the anchor down in Freeport and love it here, I like to share my home, as it seems happier when full of happy people (I stole this line from Debrae, she's got a great place up on Eggmoggin Reach, check it out). I spend a great deal of time at my girlfriend Pam's place up the road and it seems a waste to have my place empty so I hope you will come and stay, if the wind is right perhaps you'd like to join me for a sail.
