The space

Charming apartment rental in a traditionnal "mas cévenol", 7mm walk to the Gardon river by the property, with swimming hole and places to rest.
In Cévennes, Southern France. In a quiet spot, surrounded by pines and chestnut trees, the Malbosc holiday apartments are close to Saint Jean du Gard and Mialet, overlooking the Gardon river and near the bamboo forest of Anduze. It is one of the entrances to the Cévennes National Park, on the Stevenson path (GR70).
The apartment in the old farm is independent. It is located on a renovated property of 5 hectares, bordered by the river Gardon (7 mm walk from the apartmentwhere you find "spa and natural swimming hole". It offers wide outdoor spaces : a courtyard shaded by wisterias and vines, a covered terrace, a large garden with views onto the Cévennes mountains in the background.
Renovated and decorated in a rural traditional style, the 50 square-metred cottage is located at the entrance of an old seventeenth century farmhouse. The entrance hall leads to a large living room, in which a cozy corner offers a sitting area for 2, a kitchen, an independent bedroom with double bed and a bathroom.
It accommodates 2 to 4 people, or a couple with children.
It is nestled in the chestnut and pine forest of the Southern Cévennes. The environment is charming, calm, where nature is wild and offers splendid views on the Mialet valley and its river. On the border of the 5 hectare property, the bamboo forest and pebble beaches, the alternating gorges and steep pools are perfect for bathing and for children.
On the “Stevenson path”, those looking for a pure and wild landscape will find shepherd trails to hike on.
Point of entry into the Cévennes National Park, Malbosc is a 5 minute drive from Saint Jean du Gard. Close to the town of Anduze, its bamboo forest and its Sunday flea markets, this region offers historical and cultural sites which recall the History of religions and the “camisards” war (local Calvinists who rebelled during the revocation of the Nantes edict). The natural sites around, such as the Trabuc caves, are remarkable. Many cultural events (concerts, traditional balls, theatre festivals etc) will be offered to you. Local produce markets, night markets, antiques and handicraft fairs, animate all the local villages.
You will reach Malbosc by car, which can be rented at the train station in Alès (20 minutes drive), in Nîmes (1 hour) or Montpellier (1 hour 15 min).
From June the 1rst up to September the 15th, the cottage is let per week, from Saturday to Saturday.

We were disappointed by our stay. The host had listed a private pool, jacuzzi and dryer on site. None were there! Our 2 kids had been expecting a pool for their vacation and we were left with nothing to do around but go to the river nearby (really tricky - and dangerous with kids - to do from the house as we had to open ourselves 2 separate electric fences and go through a steep and horny path to reach the river). Our kids' legs were all scratched up... The mas is nice and very remotely located. Perfect to escape city life... great for adults but not recommended for young kids.

We had a great stay for 2 weeks in the gite and felt very much at home. The hospitality was very respectful and kind, the gite very peaceful, and the surroundings a great escape from busy city life. We and our 2 boys spend most of our time at the river discovering great places to swim, jump rocks, build dams, relax and attempt to catch fish ... We can definitely recommend this place and already look forward to returning.

Had a great relaxing week, mainly scrambling up and down the river. What made it for us was the river. Less than 10 minutes walk and at the time we were there (late September) there were great swimming spots 5 minutes up and downstream, and great to just go exploring along (recommend having sandals/shoes you don't mind getting wet) very clear water with lots of fish and good to see kingfishers, herons, preying mantis etc. It is a house that has been split into 3 flats, but cleverly done so that each has separate entrance and outdoor space. Nice to be able to run into St Jean du Gard for breakfast croissants in less than an hour.(about 3km away along a quiet narrow road marked as a GR). Coming for a city in the UK it was great to have a really clear night sky too.

We stayed at Joel & Ghislaine's 1 bedroom property for a week and had a fantastic time! It is large enough for a family of 4 with a good sized bathroom, 2 toilets, a good sized kitchen and comfy beds. We also had access to our own bit of the garden. Our daughters loved the rural setting, the donkeys and the 10 minute walk down to the local river. This is a beautiful, picturesque river with shallow and deeper sections that can be explored, make sure you bring some water shoes and take a picnic with you! We have also enjoyed the part of the river you have to cross, past the camping site with the small bridge that we drove over (not the direction of the Saint Jean Du Gard, its the opposite way). This part was more lively with other bathers but also really fabulous and great fun!! Saint Jean Du Gard is the nearest town with a supermarket and other amenities and where you will also need to dispose of your rubbish from the property. We enjoyed exploring the river so much that we didn't really get any time to visit the other interesting sites such as the bamboo forest or take the steam train but for us this was a much needed restful week and be amongst nature..reading, painting, swimming..if you are looking for a remote, peaceful setting, up in the mountains, this is the one for you! Thank you Ghislaine for your hospitality!!

The photos do not do this place justice, it's so beautiful and romantic. The setting is in amazing mountains, very secluded, with a private walkway to a river. Me and my boyfriend felt like we were the only people in the world at times. The apartment is rustic in a chic way, lovely bath, living room and kitchen, and a private garden. Joel and his wife were very friendly and helpful, giving us information about local markets and things to do in the local area. We would wholeheartedly recommend this place and will definitely be returning!
