The Space

“This feels more like a hidden resort!” one guest exclaimed. Kayak to offshore islands, hike to Maunawili Waterfalls, visit the serene Byodo-In Temple. Climb the Lanikai hills to see the sun rise over the Mokolua (twin) Islands. Do yoga in the yard, lanai, or living room – we have all the mats or accessories you need. Or just relax in the hammocks in under the he’e tree.
Feel the aloha in this very large Sunny Bedroom in a large house. Situated on a dead end street, there is ample street parking and no through traffic. At night you hear the breeze and smell the plumerias and crown flowers. No horns, no revving motors, no motorbikes.
Kailua is small enough for quiet, yet only 25 minutes to all the nightlife you could ask for in Waikiki. On the Windward side, Kailua is very green and cooler than the hotter Honolulu side. Kailua hosts the most beautiful white sand beaches of all the islands: Lanikai Beach is featured in many articles on the top 10 beaches of the world, Kailua beach is very long, and Waimanalo Beach is very long and even less crowded. There are several hiking trails very near: Maunawili Falls, Olomana Mountain, 'Pali' trail, Lanikai Pillbox.
The room has a brand new Queen Size bed that most couples sleep in, and a second Single Bed for the 3rd traveller or for mates or family who travel together. It has sliding French doors, shelves, desk, vanity w mirror, ceiling fans, and nightlite. Plenty of plugs for charging your electronics. WIFI high-speed internet. Windows on 2 sides of the room open onto the pool and lanai so you can feel the windward breeze as you sleep.
An important note - the bathroom is not directly attached to the room. It is on the other side of the living room.
Cool off in the 13,000 gallon swimming pool. Dolphins in the tile are very social. Relax in the hammocks in the Garden in back. Solar heated water for your showers. Room in a shared refrigerator for storing your groceries. Limited use of washer/dryer (see house rules). You can eat on the garden lanai (porch) or in the dining room.
You have access to 2 bicycles in good shape (lock em up plz), 2 ocean kayaks (one 2-person, one solo). So you can bike to get coffee, shop, or go to the beach. But you might want to put the kayaks on top of your car and paddle to the nearby Flat Island off Kailua Beach or the twin Mokulua Islands off Lanikai Beach, both less than 10 minutes nearby. You are very likely to see sea turtles as you paddle; take your camera. Be sure to stop at the famous Kalapawai Market for coffee and (website hidden) conscious hosts, please recycle. No Smoking. No cats or dogs (bird, fish, rhinos okay). Street parking right in front of house. Cable and WIFI high-speed internet.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the lanais (porches), swimming pool, garden/hammock area, large kitchen stocked w the latest appliances and a gas range. You also get use of half of a large refrigerator, coffee maker, Kona coffee, teas, yoga mats, blocks & bolsters. Laundry facilities on premises - once per 3 days max. I will provide bath towels, beach towels, daypack, and beach mats. Upon request you can rent bicycles (3 mt, one cruiser), kayaks, surfboard, body boards. There is only one surfboard, a 9'3", and it rents for $15/day. Kayaks are $15/day (have a one person and a two person, same rate), Bikes are $10/day pp for 1 day, $8/day pp for 2 days, $6/day pp for 3-7 days. Body boards are $4/day or 2 for $7/day. Always willing to work out a package deal if you want bikes and kayaks, or any combo - the more items and more days, the better the deal.

Interaction with Guests

When I am home and not traveling, I tend to be around in the mornings, but I will be busy taking care of business on computer, taking care of the house, and doing yoga. In afternoons I am working in Kailua. In the evenings, I get home around 8 PM.

The Neighborhood

I love the crystal silence. Because it is a dead end road there is little traffic. I love the view of the Lanikai mountain and the plumeria flowers in the neighborhood.

Getting around

A 3 minute walk brings you to the end of Iana St, where 'The Bus' stop is. The Bus has won awards for its convenience, modern buses (hybrids), and routes. It is quite easy to use; you can even put a bike on the front of the bus.

Other Things to Note

We are a non smoking household - just my 10 year old daughter (half-time) and myself. If you are a smoker, kindly smoke out front on the far side of the garage - depending on the wind of course, downwind is best.

  • Two of us stayed at Thomas' place in Kailua for 6 nights, in the Sun Room. It's a large space, exactly as the pictures are shown in the listing - very comfortable for two people; I'm sure three would be fine as well. Though there isn't any air conditioning, there are multiple fans in the room as well as a near-continual breeze and I never once found it to be too hot.

As mentioned, the private bathroom isn't connected to the bedroom, but we didn't find this to be an inconvenience at all. It's a large, full bathroom, complete with hair dryer. Thomas provides large bath towels as well as large beach towels and a daypack, which were all very useful and nice.

The shared living areas were clean and tidy; as a guest you get your own set of dishes, cutlery, cupboard and refrigerator/freezer space, and shared cooking utensils/pots/pans if you should choose to cook at home (we didn't). The seating area on the lanikai was in use for garden prep during our stay, but there was a table in the kitchen for eating which worked just as well.

We didn't use the pool at all, but instead chose to go to the beach (Kailua), which is a 7 minute drive away; Lanikai is just down the road from there, maybe 9 minutes away. Within walking distance of this house are multiple restaurants of various cuisines, a grocery store, gas stations, and a pub.

An added benefit for future renters will be new flooring - just prior to our departure, Thomas was getting ready to have new carpeting installed.

Thomas and his daughter Lili were very friendly, welcoming, and hospitable!

PS - if you have difficulty sleeping with light, be sure to bring a night shade - though there are blinds, the room is bright! If bird song bothers you, then maybe some ear plugs too, but I found it to be very pleasant.

  • I stayed in Thomas's house for a week and I had a pleasant stay. His place is very welcoming and clean. The room was very spacious and comfortable for 2 guest. Although the bathroom is not connected I did not find it inconvenient at all. I would stay with Thomas again because he is a very friendly and open host.

  • We stayed at Thomas for three nights and it was our first stop in Hawaii after a long flight. Check-in was really easy, as was everything else. Thomas is nice, easy-going and we felt welcome and could easily relax. Thomas' place is clean and a good location to be able to explore Kailua, the beach, some hikes and Pearl Harbour (and Honolulu, obviously). Also: a supermarket is within walking distance! We would recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a quiet yet central place to stay, where you can also relax and hang around.

  • Nice location and quiet community. House accommedations average. Host being away left guests to help each other which worked okay for us since we were not the first to arrive.

  • Three of us stayed in the sunroom for 3 nights. We loved the location. Thomas was off island during our stay, but we had fun meeting his other guests. The room suited our needs well. The house was being re-roofed while we were there, but Thomas had warned us beforehand. We were gone during the time the hammers were banging, but did have some roofing dirt come through the open windows into our room. Otherwise, a great place, even better now with a new roof. It was nice to be able to do laundry and have a large refrigerator at our disposal.

  • We recently stayed in the sunroom for six days and had such a lovely time! We absolutely loved the room-it was spacious, cozy, and all the windows allowed for all the great, warm Hawaii air to come in, but stayed cool enough to be comfortable all night. We loved the outdoor space by the pool where we enjoyed many al fresco breakfasts and dinners! This is a real treat for us Seattleites that don't get to see the sun very often! Thomas left us great suggestions on things to do on the island, and places to eat nearby. He even told us that we could borrow his kayak and bikes! We were sad that we didn't get to meet Thomas as he was abroad most of the time we were there, but we really appreciated his hospitality and flexibility during our stay. We will hopefully be back on the island soon and when we do, we hope to be staying in the sunroom again! Thank you Thomas for a wonderful vacation!

  • The room we rented was spacious, clean and comfortable. Lots of light, a nice cool breeze at night if you leave the windows open. It's pretty quiet and other guests are respectful of the quiet hours.
Host provides ample fridge space to store your food and delicious Kona coffee! He have us a quick tour and went over house rules. Gracious host and easy to communicate with prior to arrival.
The bathroom is private - you just have to walk across the living room to get to it. I did catch one of the other guests using the bathroom while we we're there (they have their own private bathroom) - that was annoying, but the other guests were chill.
This is a great place to have a homebase for all our island adventures. Only 2 miles from Kailua beach- a big plus and super convenient to get to supermarket, restaurants, and cute Kailua town.
We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend for others who want to enjoy Kailua and the windward side.
    Mahalo for the hospitality!!!

We had a great time with Thomas. He was a woderful host.

I am from Kailua Hawaii, I live in the house in which there is/are rooms available at various times. It is a large house with lanais (porches) on the side, with a swimming pool in back, nicely landscaped. I am 50+ years old, I have a 9 y/o daughter who sometimes stays with me, she is very fun, easygoing, and friendly. I am a psychologist with my own Wellness Center in Kailua - check my (email hidden) for more information on me. The house has solar hot water, 4 bathrooms, and no pets. I am healthy, do not smoke, and do not drink alcohol. I cannot accept intoxicated renters - a little tipsy is fine but not inebriated. Neither smoking nor candles are allowed in the house or on the property.
