The Space

***The most recent 'issues' from the last 3 guests have been ADDRESSED and FIXED!!! This is, once again, an amazing place to stay. My overall rating is super high for a reason. I'm looking forward to meeting you. Thanks for the consideration.***

YOUR HOST:
-35yr old GAY San Francisco resident of 10+ years.
-5+ years in this apartment
-Open-minded, happy go lucky kind of guy.
-I'm a stoner and I drink a pretty good bit. ;-)

HIGHLIGHTS (aka FREE STUFF):
-FREE WiFi
-FREE full-wall projection with cable and dvd player

THE APARTMENT:
-This posting is for a simple bedroom rental (not a full apartment rental) with access to the kitchen and restroom. The other areas are occupied, by the two people who live here, and are probably not accessible.

-Important notes:
I will be sleeping in the living room.
You will take my bedroom and it's all yours.
95% of people love me, the location, and the room.
The other 5%... should have stayed at a hotel. LOL.
It's a great deal per night compared to how much rent we pay and how much hotels in SF cost. Trust me, you're getting a great deal!

-Wake up in a great neighborhood just minutes from everything you want to see and do in San Francisco.

-Your bedroom windows face the building's courtyard side where you can hear passing car and foot traffic that fades into white noise.

-Rooftop access for smoking, photography, lounging, sun tanning, etc. There's no deck. It's just a rooftop.

-I have a roommate (who sleeps in his bedroom) and I will be sleeping in the living room. The AirBnB room is usually my bedroom which I will be giving up to you during your stay. I am renting just a room, not the whole apartment which is why it's so CHEAP.

KITCHEN:
-Working gas stove/oven, pots, pans, storage containers, plates, bowls, and utensils for cooking and eating.

-Large refrigerator/freezer (with ice) and you get half of the space for storing food. Great for cooking quick meals and holding on to leftovers to save money.

BATHROOM:
-My morning routine only takes about 30 minutes, so, you will not have to compete for bathroom time. Try to limit your time to about 30 minutes per stretch. Somebody inevitably needs to tinkle. Yes, I said 'tinkle'.

-Candles, matches, incense, baby wipes, plush toilet paper for your pooping enjoyment.

-Shower, bathtub, toilet, sink, and a toiletry caddy for you to use while you are here in my place.

-Fresh towels provided.

Guest Access

-This posting is for a simple bedroom rental (not a full apartment rental, which is also available on AirBnB) with access to the kitchen and restroom. The other areas are occupied and probably not accessible.

Interaction with Guests

I love hosting on AirBnB and have enjoyed the majority of my guests. Independent guests are my favorite [those here for work, to move to the city, or on vacation for sightseeing and SF experiences]. You can lounge in your bedroom as much as you like but SF is awesome and you'll have more fun if you go out and access it. I'll probably be out doing just that.

I'm a Restaurant Server and I work alot (I go in late and sometimes get in late) so independent guests are best. Don't worry, I'll set you up for success.

My roommate is a bartender so he gets in at 2 or 3 in the morning many nights.

I'm best via text since I'm not always around. Independent guests seem to have the best experience. If I am around, I will definitely chat you up and give my perspectives and tips for the city.

The Neighborhood

"Hands down, this is my favorite neighborhood in the City. It's GRITTY yet CHARMING. I love it!"
-Me

"The principal thoroughfare of the Mission District of San Francisco is Mission Street. Its borders are U.S. Route 101 to the east which forms the boundary between the eastern portion of the district, known as 'Inner Mission' and its eastern neighbor,Potrero Hill, while Sanchez Street separates the neighborhoods from Eureka Valley (also known as "The Castro") and Noe Valley to the west."
-Wikipedia

"One of the central districts of San Francisco, CA. It is the city's Latino district. It is famous for its historic buildings Mission burritos (the best in Northern California), and its murals. Rich people who tour San Francisco for a limited time think that the Mission is the ghetto. That's kind of true, but the disdain some of these people take with them is unfortunate. The Mission district is large and complex, with varying socioeconomic areas, clusters of mini-communities, and several specialty stores found nowhere else. Native San Franciscans know it as one of the 'cool' districts."

Getting around

STAY HERE AND BE:
-1 block from Muni and Bart.
-1 block to grocery shopping
-2 minutes from Downtown for only $1.75 (each way)
-1 block to popular bars, shops, and the best local eats
-A short walk to Dolores Park (which is a must, especially on Sunday Funday!)

***Everyone uses Googl Maps and Navigation to get around the city.

***Yelp is a great way to find local eats. I can also point you in the right direction.

Other Things to Note

*BRING EARPLUGS and put your alarm on vibrate if you are a light sleeper. PLEASE don't ask me to turn down tv or talk lower. It's my home and sometimes I rock out. I would never stay at someone's house and ask them to keep it down. Ewww, right?

*Don't lock yourself out of your own room. There is no key. It's only happened 2 times out of over 30 stays. I may come in to open/close a window, drop off extra towels, etc. while you are gone but no one here will touch your stuff. Feel free to lock it when you sleep (so unnecessary) but be sure to unlock it when you walk out for the day.

  • First and foremost to other users, read the reviews thoroughly!! I had a very similar experience to previous guests. However, I was extremely busy during my stay so I did not spend much time in the space or get to know Jonathan. We pretty much had opposite schedules which is both good and bad.

The biggest thing to be aware of is that this is indeed Jonathan's bedroom and he will be staying in the living room. This kind of deterred me from spending time in the space. I felt I could not utilize the full space since the living room was transformed into his bedroom. The bedroom itself was pretty clean and cozy.

Jonathan is incredibly nice and easy going. So regarding him as a person, he seems to be a chill, kind, welcoming guy. However the space is not what I was expecting. It was not that clean and could definitely use a thorough cleaning. However I understand that people get busy and cleaning every square inch of a place can be really demanding. The kitchen wasn't accessible due to dishes, full trash cans, and the table had a lot of stuff on it. If I wanted to cook that would have been really difficult.

All in all, this was a meh experience so I ended up staying at a different place a few nights during my stay.

  • Jon was a very kind host and I found his place convenient for exploring the Mission. However the apartment could use a thorough clean-up.

    June 2014
  • Jonathan is a very nice, easy going guy and was a pleasure to meet.

His listing is a very different matter.

I very rarely write a review anywhere that speaks negatively of an experience or service, however this time is the exception. I do not wish to harm anyone's ability to operate as they see fit. This is my personal experience, and only reflects how I found this listing to be upon my check-in. I post it here for other AirBnB user's to consider. I will be as matter of fact as possible.

Location: Fine. It's The Mission, so expect gritty.

Apartment: It appears that the place hadn't had a decent cleaning or organizing in some time. The living room appeared to have someone living in it, and was very disheveled. Dirty laundry, blankets, pillows strewn about in a chaotic manner. The entire apartment smelled of both stale and fresh marijuana smoke.

Bedroom: Sheets from previous person still on bed, which was unmade. One single pillow. No top sheet, just a throw which was crumpled on the corner of the bed. Hairs very evident on the bed. Crumbs of food on the floor and desk. Desk also covered with a thick coating of dust. A trash bag with trash in it was hanging from the inside doorknob. No place to put my belongings, had I chose to unpack. Overall, it felt very unclean and disheveled. No effort had been made to accommodate a guest. I believe this is Jonathan's bedroom.

Kitchen: Table was covered with various items, empty boxes, storage containers and the like. One chair. No place to put anything on the table. Sink full of dirty dishes. Stove top had residue of previous meals and spills which were left to dry. Floor was noticeably not swept recently. Unclean.

Bathroom: Full trash can. Significant amount of black mold growing in the shower, around the edges of the tub, and all along the windowsill. Extremely unhygienic. No towels left for guest. After asking, Jonathan brought me towels, after he finished smoking his pipe.

I vacated the property. Jonathan did not respond to my request for a refund. After 8 days, AirBnB issued me a full refund.

Hopefully this was just a bad period of time and Jonathan was just unprepared. However, I will not attempt to book here again, given the condition of this listing.

I ended up having to find a hotel on very short notice, and paid nearly double what this listing would have cost me had it been as advertised.

    Caveat emptor.

  • Thank you Jon for the wonderful stay in San Francisco. Jonathan was an excellent host. He took the extra time to answer my questions about the city, including transportation tips and leisure activities. His place is located in Mission, an interesting and central part of the city. A pleasure to stay with; a welcoming and kind soul.
