About this listing

Hawaiian Lifestyle awaits you in this 116 year old notched Ohia log cabin located one mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a rustic
hideaway honeymoon house, in a lush, native forest; a mix of old charm+modern conveniences, Wifi+a wood stove. 1 Week Min @ XMAS.
Pricing listed is for up to 4 people. 5-6 people rate is $250 per night.

The space

116 year old notched Log Cabin in the middle of the Rainforest, 1 mile from Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. Can Be Damp!
There is a King Size Memory Foam Bed in the Master and a Queen in the Loft Bedroom and Cable TV in Living Room & Master Bedroom.
Full Bath Main Level and a "throne" and corner sink on upper level for middle of the night business. WARNING: If you want Modern, Don't Book This!!!
The kitchen is very well equipped, right down to a coffee bean grinder and a French Press as well as a regular coffee pot.
Gas stove, though oven does not work; therefore we have an oversized toaster oven big enough to roast a small chicken!
There is a wood burning stove. Wood is provided for your stay. The entire Village of Volcano gets their water by catchment tanks in each yard. As we are in the middle of a Rain Forest and these tanks are not hermetically sealed, and can't be, we therefore supply bottled water to insure good health for anything you may ingest, like water for making coffee, brushing teeth, steaming veggies and the like. Some may find this inconvenient but this is part village life in Volcano, and there is always plenty of bottled water at your service!
We are conscientious about water conservation due to the catch systems, but there is plenty in the tank to be able to shower and handle daily needs.
A few good restaurants nearby as well as a general store right across the road!
With a mile of the National Park, hiking opportunities R endless.
There are also a few wonderful art galleries, including Volcano Garden Arts which serves lunch at Cafe Ono and sit in the beautiful sculpture lined garden.
Minimum at Christmas is 10 days. TAT#W

We provide drinking water and want you to use it for anything you ingest as the water in the house lines are from a catch system.
If you are going to open a window, use the short screens that are provided on each floor of the Cabin. Sorry, no pets and no smoking inside the Log Cabin, outside OK
We do ask that if you make a fire, be sure the door to the wood stove is securely locked before heading up to bed. If you leave the door to the kitchen closed the Cabin gets very toasty!

The best thing about this place is the location. The cabin is only a few minutes away from the Volcanoes National Park. The location is also quiet and secluded - though it is on a road with other cabins and houses so it is not in the middle of nowhere. We stayed here for 8 nights, and I would recommend this cabin is best for a much shorter stay, to visit the nearby National Park. Though this is an old cabin, many amenities are either broken or not working properly which make staying here for more than a couple of days frustrating in some ways. The main negative experience was the bed in the master bedroom. It was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on. You sink in to the mattress, and I couldn't lie flat because I was lying in a dish shape, having sunk in. And I am of a normal weight and female.n Basically, once you adopt one position you cannot move around, and both people who slept in this bed got really bad backache. I resorted to sleeping downstairs on the sofa for one night out of exasperation. This might be OK for a short stay, but over a week, this really impacted on the enjoyment of the stay. The cooker is very old and only has two hobs with very low gas flames, so things take ages to cook. This is fine for one or two nights, but staying longer this was frustrating for any cooking other than the most basic. The cooker is complex to get working properly - and no instructions were provided. We had to email to get instructions - which were provided within an hour, but instructions would help. The place is extremely damp. The front window has a hole in it which doesn't help. Clothes didn't dry here even after 2 days hanging by the fire. There is severe rotting of the floorboards near the shower, which are covered by a rug. During our stay, I found 4 slugs on the rugs in the bathroom or in the kitchen, presumably due to the damp. The upstairs sink doesn't work at all - no water - yet soap was provided.

Response from Cynthia:
Well this review was the most bizarre. First off, they did call me about how to light 'the hob' (stove burners) and I led them through the process of using the fire clicker to light the middle ring of the burner and then turn the knob up for a full flame. Obviously, they never turned it up past the igniting ring as this 'old cooker' (an antique O'Keefe and Merritt whose ALL 4 burners work just fine) has no issue what so ever with igniting to a full flame on all burners. As they say the response to their question was less than an hour, as it would be for any questions they may have had. The 'most uncomfortable bed that you sink into' is a Memory Foam Mattress! Only one other party who have reviewed did not like the memory foam. Most state it is the best bed they have ever slept in. Well we can't have multiple mattresses so not much I can do there since most adore it. And Yes It IS Damp. This is even stated in the description as this home is in the Middle of a Rainforest! With a good fire going it dries out quickly. Just had the housekeeper check the sink upstairs and it works fine. She confirmed the water comes out. They may have been trying to turn a knob that lifts would be my guess. It works. The 'hole in the front window' is a gem of historic proportion as the cabin was built in 1901, Yes It IS OLD, by a man who had help from the cowboys, Hawaiian Paniolo of the day and those boys had the right to stay there whenever they drove cattle through and it's a very educated guess that a card game went awry as the 'hole' is a bullet hole that goes from the inside of the house out! Old Hawaiian History! And certainly not a means of letting cold enter. Lastly, yes, there are rotting floor boards just in front of the shower. The kitchen and bath were an add on and whomever built it never put a sub floor so it is built right on the ground and every few years we have to replace that spot by the shower, so we do keep a rug there so that guests can step out onto that and feel comfort. Maybe it's time for another fix. It's an old house. People have to realize what they are coming to. If you read most of the reviews here, it is people who appreciate the fact that this is a true rustic old cabin who get the most out of it. I'm sorry these folks were looking for more modern and yet, booked old, ancient actually. This old Cabin, The Only Authentic Notched LOG CABIN in the State of Hawaii, is now 116 years old. God Bless These Logs..... With Much Aloha, Cynthia

We had such a great stay in the log cabin! It is rustic, which is something that appeals to us! Our young adult sons were so happy to stay in a place like this, maybe because they only imagine this in a movie. They didn't want to leave.! The cabin is a perfect location in Volcano Village! Cynthia was kind and caring, and very prompt on responding to a concern of ours. Can't wait to go back!

We didn't meet Cynthia in person but she sent a detailed notice before we arrived, the place is comfy, with a lot of trees surrounded, just feel like in a fairytale. It's very convenient to the volcano park, like 5m by car, it's difficult to cook there but a grocery store is just cross the street and you can also find a good Thai restaurant nearby. Overall it's a different experience for us to stay at this place.

This place is amazing on so many levels. The History is apparent the moment you set foot in the door. We were so glad it cooled down enough one morning that we needed to light a fire.. breakfast and coffee looking out at the mossy yard and lush green plants in the rain was wonderful. if you like the " real deal " this is it... people try to fake this kind of charm but always fall woefully short.

This is a large, rustic cabin with a lot of character! Our kids (ages 5 & 8) absolutely loved the secret back door, the cool staircase and the moss lawn. We all slept upstairs and we were very comfortable (8 year old in one room, 5 year old on the futon and their parents in the master bedroom). The listing is accurate - it is a great place for a family who enjoys a more rustic environment and a little adventure.

Everything we needed was available. Nearby LavaRock Cafe served a mean grass fed local burger. See volcano at night gate remains open when park closes. You can see dancing lava from lookout over Kilauea next to awesom Jagfar museum. Bring national park pass for free parking during day.
