The Neighborhood

The history of the neighbourhood:
In Rome's Regal period (753-509 BC), the area across the Tiber belonged to the hostile Rome conquered it to gain control of and access to the river from both banks, but was not interested in building on that side of the river. In fact, the only connection between Trastevere and the rest of the city was a small wooden bridge called the Pons By the time of the Republic c. 509 BC, the number of sailors and fishermen making a living from the river had increased, and many had taken up residence in Trastevere. The area began to be considered part of the city under Augustus, who divided Rome into 14. Thanks to its partial isolation (it was "beyond the Tiber") and to the fact that its population had been multicultural since the ancient Roman period, the inhabitants of Trastevere, called Trasteverini, developed a culture of their common people of famous tenacity, pride and authenticity.

Modern Days:
Today Trastevere still maintains its character through the winding streets covered with sanpietrini (the typical pavement of Rome) overlooked medieval houses. The night is full of people, both Italian and foreign, thanks to the wealth of restaurants and pubs for every price range.
It is one of the most lively, characteristic and self-sufficient of the city. Offers typical Roman restaurants and pizzerias as well, markets as Portaportese, the largest and oldest flee market in Rome, workshops of every kind and elegant shops.
Another trait that characterizes the area are the monuments to Gioachino Belli and Trilussa, emblems Trastevere and The Tiber Island that is the only urban island of the Tiber in Rome city center.

Getting around

The neighborhood offers all the amenities you need, typical restaurants, organized tours, many pubs and clubs for nightlife, every Sunday morning there is PORTAPORTESE, the most famous and historic street market of Rome and a excellent sports center at 100 meters.

The connections with the city are excellent! The house has the Tram n°8 right under the house, that in a few minutes can connect you to the historic center, to the Vatican the train connects you in 10 minutes, Ghetto and the rest of the city. Then in 3 minutes walk, you arrive at the train station for the airport. If you are by car, there is a payment garage under the house or also free parking. The environment is very peaceful on a quiet street.

Other Things to Note

Please note that it is essential to communicate the time of your check-in and/or the time of your arrival in Rome and also communicate any delays. We also warn our guests that if we do not received the correct arrival time we will not respond to any inconvenience.

The Italian law requests for B&Bs to serve only typical Italian Breakfast, with all goods pre-packed with expiring date.
But for people who would like to also have an American breakfast (eggs, bacon, cheese, etc..) We have an agreement and discount with a restaurant near our home.

Not included in room price: EUR 2 city tax per person per night.

When you book, we'll send you an email of confirmation with all the informations and directions to arrive at Gabriel Suite.

While you will stay in here, we are ready to give you the best and unforgettable stay.

  • Beautiful room just outside of Rome! Alec met us there and was so lovely, he showed us around and gave us some tips for Rome! The room was immaculate, everything was perfect!

  • Alec and Alek were WONDERFUL host. We loved our 2 night stay in this suit. Alec helped us learn how to navigate around Rome and told us great places to see and eat. The room was always immaculate when we got home. The air conditioner kept the room cool even during the hot June/ July months. We LOVED staying in Trastevere. At first I was nervous because it was not in the middle of all the action, but we ended up being very thankful we did not stay somewhere that was. The restaurants in Trastevere were not tourist traps and the metro line was a few steps from this wonderful B and B. It takes a few minutes on the metro to be in the center of Rome. Overall LOVED our experience with Alek and Alec!

  • From friday the 13th till 17th of june my dad and I stayed at Alec's suite. The information at the site about the suite and facilities was almost too good to be true but when we arrived everything was right! From fiumicino AirPort was very easy, just 25 minutes and then a 5 minute walk. The room was nice and also the bathroom was good, we got a good explaination about things we could do and extra recommendations (also restaurants) the breakfast was fine, enough to start your day and much different things to choose! The recommendations were nice but it is also nice to go to the area Trastavere, here you can find real old italian restaurants! From the appartment it is a couple minutes to the tram, and then it was around 15 minutes to piazza venetia, Very good to reach! We also got online tickets for the vatican and Alec was so nice and kind that he wanted to print it out for us! They are very kind and willing to help you anytime. We are very happy with our stay and would definitely stay here the next time!

  • I stayed with at the Relais St Angel B&B for 2 nights, and it was great. Beautiful, spacious room with air conditioning, and all around very clean. Great location--right near Stz. Trastevere, and on multiple bus lines and the #8 tram (and about a 20-25 min walk into the historical centre). Alec and Alex were friendly and helpful.

  • Chambre conforme à la description dans un appartement charmant et très bien situé (proche du tram). Nous avons été accueillis chaleureusement, à recommander!

  • Alec and Alek were lovely hosts! The room was very clean and the bed was very comfortable. Alek speaks excellent English and was able to give great advice about restaurants and how to take public transit. My husband and I ate at one of the nearby restaurants that Alek recommended (Osteria Pistoia). It is a quick 4 minute walk and very good. We unexpectedly walked in during their happy hour which consists of free appetizer buffet if you purchase a drink. What a pleasant surprise! I highly recommend these hosts for your stay in Rome!

  • We were extremely disappointed with our stay at the B&B. The introduction consisted of a map with highlights circled and general directions to the tram and train. While the breakfast may have been a "typical European breakfast", it was all pre-packaged items with the exception of two kinds of cereal and a few pieces of fruit. We were not permitted to make coffee when we returned from our day out nor we were permitted to make coffee before 8 a.m. The room was visually clean, but needed a deep clean - like scrubbing the shower to get rid of the mold on the shower door and actually vacuuming under the bed and sofa (I dropped something and had to check under the bed). The room is on the first floor of an apartment building and the walls are paper thin. The people in the apartment above us were horribly loud and had a dog that was either running around above us or barking every single second we were in the room. Our toilet would not stop running and we had to manually turn it off and on (which is a challenge since the tank is mounted on the wall about 8 feet off the floor) for two days. We were initially told that we were “pushing the button too hard”. After the second day, a maintenance person came in to fix it. Also, if you want clean towels, it’s 6 euros a day – and do not leave them on the floor or you will get a note on your bed. There were no dressers (only a rolling rack with a few hangers) and only one small hook in the bathroom to hang your towel. We felt like we were walking on eggshells all the time and were unable to relax in our room. We were going to move to a different place but would have been unable to get any of our money back.

    Response from Alec:

    Dear Susane ,
Before you write certain things you should get informed.
First, the Italian law for the b&b's provides that breakfast is only European and the food all pre-packag with the expiring date, but apparently you have not listened carefully to our explanation because if you wanted to eat otherwise and elsewhere, you could have gone with our coupons to nearby restaurant downstairs.
As for the coffee we serve an overnight stay and breakfast. We are not obliged to give you free coffee at all hours of the day. For breakfast we give an hour so that the other guests don't get disturbed with the noise of the breakfast as it was written in the brochure that you read in your room.
You broke the bathroom drain and maintenance came twice after one day because it was a Sunday but we didn't ask you the money for the deposit. the bathroom was always a mess, with hair everywhere and dirty footprints with your filty shoes.
You were extremely dirty and messy. Your clothes were everywhere, your filthy bags where on the couch and you moved all the furniture of the room. You are the last people who may complain for cleaning, since we daily tried to make your room as tidy as possibile. We would like to see your homes. Respect for other people's things you should always have.
We make a change of towels every three days, always under Italian Law. This is not a hotel but a private apartment. And you've ruined some towels as well.
What intelligent person would come up, leaving a pile of towels soaked with water over a floor of frugal without thinking that the wooden floor can inflate and break!
Unfortunately some people are not suited for travelling but it is better that they remain at home.
We work with airbnb for 2 years, but really we are not convinced that they deserve a redemption review by a person who clearly wrote this just for spite.
