The Space

Cabin/ antique Bali Hut in beautiful Hawaii on one half acre with ocean views on the Big island of Hawaii on the Puna coast, five minutes walking distance to the black sand beach where the dolphins swim and spin, whale watch in the winter months and play in the surf. My rental is just twenty minutes from Pahoa town where you will find many resturants and grocery and health food stores. This beautiful coastline is one of the most picturesque and oldest parts of Hawaii, twenty minutes to snorkeling and warm pools. This coastline road is perfect for a long bicycle ride to explore this beautiful paradise's hidden treasures. The retreat center Kalani Oceanside retreat is just five minutes from my home, offering yoga classes,a daily schedule of various classes plus a gift shop and resturant with three meals per day. This hut was hand carved in East Timor, Indonesia, sixty years ago and is free standing, open aired, screened with privacy mesh shades. The Bali house is quiet and peaceful, you will sleep to the sound of ocean surf and swaying palm trees. The bathroom and outdoor hot shower are separate from the house and very private, surrounded by trees and plants, their is a privacy fence on the border. The shower is not visible to my home or neighbors. No cooking facilities are available. Please note this is a non-smoking home and grounds in a very quiet neighborhood. I will be happy to tell you of all the great things to do here on our special and beautiful island. Aloha and mahalo.

Guest Access

The guests will have access to our beautiful coastal road, state parks, jungle walks, hot ponds that are heated by underground lava vents. Tide pools that are great for snorkeling, a black sand beach that is accessible for good walkers and good swimmers. My guests do not have to even leave the area, their are plenty of adventures to be found on this beautiful road.

Interaction with Guests

I am very social with my guests if they wish any information or guidance on their trip. I am always available to them when they need assistance or need anything to make them more comfortable.

The Neighborhood

My neighborhood is peaceful and very quiet, lots of beautiful plants to see on a neighborhood walk. My backyard is beautiful for plants and star gazing. My neighborhood is also very safe, I do have an office if you wish to lock up any valuables.

Getting around

I strongly urge my guests to rent a car, their is a public bus but it only runs twice a day and does not make it easy to view the sites here.

Other Things to Note

The Bali hut is in total commune with nature, you can see the plants surrounding the hut, hear the ocean, watch the birds fly by, the hut is screened and has privacy mesh shades and with the trees and plants, gives you total privacy. This is the same for the outdoor shower. You will also see our beautiful dancing geko's on the ceiling that are completely harmless, my guests love them and I do also.

  • We found everything the way we expected it and had a great stay in the jungle!

  • My friend and I stayed at the Bali hut for two days and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our visit. The hut itself is a work of art, and very comfortable. The heated outdoor shower was pleasant, the yard is beautiful, and everything was clean and well-kept.

We unfortunately didn't have the chance to meet Louisa, as she was out of town at the time, but her assistant Equator took good care of us and was very helpful with directions, which was especially nice since we were taking the bus. We hope to come back as soon as possible.

    Highly recommended!

  • It was lovely to stay in the Bali Hut. You are surrounded by nature, frogs in het evening and birds in the morning. It is wonderfull to fall asleep with all these naturesounds around you. The hut is ecofriendly, which is a good way to help in preserving nature. We really loved staying here.

Thank you for your great review. I am so happy you enjoyed it and hope you come back. My toilet is not a composting toilet but a normal one but I do compost all my food scraps and give them back to all the beautiful plants on the land. Aloha, Louisa

  • We had the best vacation ever. I already want to go back!!! Thank you Louisa for this amazing little Bali Hut. After exploring the island all day, it was the biggest joy to come back to our own little retreat in nature. At the Bali hut, you really feel like you're away from it all, waking up to palm trees and falling asleep to the jungle sounds away from cell reception (there is wifi upon request). This is what a vacation should be! Louisa is an amazing host. Super kind, caring and helpful. We can't wait to be back on the big island. Thank you Louisa for sharing this gem! Highly highly recommend it.

Biggest hugs and much love, Oxana and Cristya

  • Getting there at night was a challenge, but the hidden jewel Louisa offers is worth it by 100!! Nothing like waking up on a clear day in this beautiful and romantic place. Louisa even found us snorkelling gear and gave us tons of good places to visit, making our stay even more special. If you can support the few small iguanas that actually take care of the other more annoying stuffs, this place is for you!

Mahalo Louisa, thanks again and see you soon!!

  • My wife and I never met Louisa, though she was nice in her correspondence. As for the hut, we booked it for two nights and only stayed for one night because it was not our thing. Here are all of the details: First, it is in quite a remote area, a long way to get to, and we found out later that the neighborhood is a hippie haven. The property you will be staying on has a lot of eastern religion statuary and such...so if you are not into Buddah, this might not be for you. My wife and I are Christian, so the vibe was a bit weird. There is NO privacy at the hut, there are not even blinds on all sides...no curtains. You cannot lock the door - oddly enough it locks from the outside....so somebody on the outside can lock you in there! The floor is just slats with wide gaps, so any bug or creature that can fit through the cracks has full access to you in the hut. My wife had 6 large bites on her face in the morning. The shower area also has no real privacy...there needs to be a curtain. You are fully exposed to Louisa's house s well as the neighbor if they decided to be in that part of their yard. This is probably not a big deal in hippieville, but it didn't feel right to my wife and me...needless to say, we took no showers there!
So, I just wanted this setting and property to be fully disclosed so that you have all of the facts and can use them to make your decision. We disliked it so much we had to pay for another hotel in Hilo, even though we had already paid for a second night in this hut, money which we lost sadly, due to no fault of ours.

  • Paradise found. Waking up to the swaying palm trees was the best. Love the shower too. We made friends with the frogs, both in the trees and on the lawn...our neighbours for a few days. Thanks for sharing your little slice of heaven with us Louisa.

  • The Bali House is soo nice. When you wake up in the morning and first see the nature around you and the sunrise- it's unbeatable. In the evening you have a concert of frogs and birds- it's amazing. Even when it's raining its such an romantic place. Also Louisa was the most gracious host we had on our long trip. She is so lovely and helpful, you feel like staying at your family. Don't miss to ask her about the secrets of the island which you can't find in your travel guide;)
