Architect's Cottage Penestanan

House - Entire home/apt · Jalan Campuhan, Ubud, Bali 80571, Indonesia

Penestanan is the hip part of town to be in! Our village has no cars, but plenty of little restaurants and yoga and massage within walking distance.
Be in Ubud in 12 minutes walking but still feel outside of it all.

The Space

Airbnb has just selected us as one of 12 properties in the world , on their site, to be highlighted for our high standards! You can find us in the Hospitality section on your laptop or on your ipad or iphone under Accuracy... There is a small interview with me .. and a photo of one of our guests at Jazmin...They tell me a video is forthcoming... :)The Hip Little House House is next door to my 2 joglos: Passiflora and Jazmin... Walk 4 minutes or ride a rented motorbike (5$ per day) along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our freshly completed little renovated Balinese cottage. The Hip Little House House is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan Kaja. Our artist's village has no car access or car sounds but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, and still just minutes away from Ubud.

Enjoy the balcony upstairs and the daybed in the living room.
The outdoor shower is delightful.

Penestanan now has its very own yoga studio, meditation center, three charming restaurants and a cafe so you don't even have to get on your motorbike. If you are interested in cleansing, Alchemy, a few blocks away, has all you need. And we can organize a private fast with an excellent coach for you.
Our masseur can come to the house for massage, or you can walk to Eve Spa for a treatment.

Made and Made will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of our homemade yogurt and fruit or black rice pudding. I'll leave you my list of my favorite masseurs and drivers and secret spots and restaurants. I am putting together some sample itineraries for 3 day stays, 5 day stays and 7 day stays with side notes for designers, the sporty, yoguinis,
the spiritually oriented. I know how confusing it can be to arrive and be faced
with so many choices. After 10 years in Ubud and my design experience, I have narrowed down the choices to the best of the best. :) Allo or Made (another one) can take you there!
I'll give you the prices ...

We are also happy to organize a trip to healers in Ubud and the surrounding areas. And we have an excellent friend who can organize a juice fast or a healthy eating experience, complete (email hidden) class.
If you are interested we can work up a private spa experience for you...

There is a laundry very close by where you can take your clothes to be washed.

Like the joglos, this is an experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!

If you rent for 5 days or more we include pick up at the airport.

If you are part of a larger group, the joglos can be rented in combination. All the best from Bali, Alejandra

The Neighborhood

There is no place in the world like Penestanan, Ubud. If you like meeting up with Balinese on the walking path as well as interesting folks from around the world... Penestanan is your spot.

Getting around

No public transport. Motor scooters are rentable for $5 per day. Taxis into town are very expensive. Walking is very enjoyable and doable from Penestanan. Lately we have experienced more robberies in Ubud do to the huge increase in tourism..

  • Our stay at Alejandra's littlte house in Penestanan was just great! We enjoyed the silence and the fantastic view over the rice paddies, the walks to the small village to cozy restaurants and coffee places (especially the yellow cafe). We met Alejandra who was super nice and Made the housemade who organized everything just perfect for us - the pick up from the place we stayed before, the massage we had in the hip little house's own massage bed, the laundry, the breakfast which was just perfect for the temperature (some exotic delicious fruits with yogurt, bred with butter and jelly, coffee)...
the house is super nice and is the perfect place to relax, enjoy silence, read, listen to the nature and enjoy this great green view! For two people the house offers a lot of space with its balcony upstairs and terrace downstairs, daybeds and the huge bathroom in which you can even get a tan in the open shower ;-)
the communication with Alejandra was perfect and everyone is very helpful! What else can I say.... I just can highly recommend the hip little house in the great location!
PS. don't forget your flashlights when you go for a walk through the rice paddies. And the village has no car access, so either you ask people who bring you by scooter or you rent a bike for the 10 minute ride to ubud, but remember that the ride is going to be a hard workout!

  • Alejandra (email hidden)! She upgraded us to one of her beautiful open air joglos... which was perfect for our honeymoon! The joglo exuded such stylish simple living elegance, with an open air living area integrated with the surrounding lush green rice paddies and beautifully manicured tropical gardens, frogs, fireflies and other such critters... the open air bathroom was divine for submerging oneself under the moonlight in the evenings, and the private bedroom was very comfortable. Sri and Made would come every morning to fix breakfast and tidy up, and were very helpful in providing/organising any other services or needs we required/had, such as a driver, massages, laundry etc. Yellow Flower Cafe around the corner was our favourite hangout and if you befriend local hound 'Whisky' (who belongs to the Balinese land owners at the entrance to the property), do let him guide you to the local Bintang supermarket - about a ten minute walk away - he'll even wait for you out the front of the supermarket and walk you home again!

I am an architectural designer and world wanderer. I've lived and designed in lots of countries, but so far Bali is my favorite and I keep staying... 10 years and counting. My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner. In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures. If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know... we can show you what we are working on... I'm Argentine-American. Hablemos en español, français, italiano.
