Hidden in Penestanan, Marguerite is designed to be in Touch with Nature. The upstairs bedroom is like being in a treehouse & downstairs opens completely to the outdoors. This is the hippest area: yoga, cafes, rice-paddy walks & 15 min walk to Ubud. We are off the beaten path and hard to find as there is no direct car access so we STRONGLY advise using our select drivers who know our location & will carry bags the 6 minute walk + 30 steps. For Fit Folks who want to experience the Natural Bali.

The space

Lounge on one of three daybeds and two balconies. Take a dip in our shared saltwater pool. We have incorporated an old Javanese panel, but the spirit is modern. Enjoy the handmade grass roof and shower in the outdoor shower.

Guest access

The house is all yours. The pool is shared with our two other houses joglos , architect designed natural villa 1, and architect designed natural villa 2.

Interaction with guests

Made and Made will come by in the morning and prepare a lovely omelette breakfast with French butter, Bali Buda multi grain bread, homemade yogurt and of course, tropical fruit... We are available via SMS and email with any questions... and we have provided a handmade map of the area and a list of our favorite, secret spots and restaurants. A local phone with our numbers is for your use.

Other things to note

Our houses are especially designed to be in touch with nature and most people love the experience. In Ubud that means there are definitely geckos in every house (they eat mosquitos and according to the Balinese bring good luck) and you will hear frogs at night. We do not use AC and instead have designed for cross ventilation and have a ceiling fan. If you are used to a standard hotel experience , Marguerite may not be for you. A book about our work will be released in December 2017.

Nestled in between rice fields in Penestanan Village outside of Ubud, Villa Marguerite is a real treat. If you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing, serene, naturally beautiful environment then this villa is a great choice. As mentioned in the description, it’s not easy to get to and requires some level of fitness to go up and down the various staircases. I didn’t quite expect that, but you get used to it. It’s also a solid walk to Ubud Main Road - 20 mins gets you just to the beginning really, and there’s much more further down. We ended up taking taxis to and from much of the time (it rained a few times and we were tired from long days at others), and it was about 50,000 Rupiyah each way. As one would expect, there are some pests...ants, mosquitos, spiders, lizards, etc. The mosquito net helps a bit, but it took some time to adjust to the open air. It was lovely to listen to the heavy rain in the early morning. The ladies who made breakfast were simply delightful and it was so yummy! Plenty of options for all tastes - the black rice pudding was divine! We also tried the Yellow Flower Cafe on the last day which was yummy as well. The pool was refreshing and in a beautiful setting. It’s right in front of this villa which is great!

This is a perfect spot if you're looking for a very, very secluded spot in Ubud. The decor is beautiful, host is responsive and helpful, and breakfast is lovely. Also, we highly recommend the massage. Keep in mind- if you are not looking for a secluded spot or have AC as a priority this is not your best option. Thanks to the team for a great stay (albeit a short one)!

Sri's place was beautiful and as pictured. We wish we had more time to enjoy the space. It's at a nice location outside of the main downtown area but there are restaurants nearby. Home made breakfast was delicious and one of the best meals we had on our trip! Sri was very nice and accommodating and catered to my wife's dietary needs. The staff also helped with laundry which we really appreciated. Overall highly recommended!!

Thank you for your kind words, Michael. And delighted you enjoyed breakfast. We buy Bali Buda fresh whole grain bread, use very good butter and homemade jam and try to cook our super thin omelettes just enough. :) We know how disappointing it can be to have a breakfast that is not so good.

We had an awesome time at Alejandra's place. Everything was perfectly arranged for our arrival. The villa is amazing and is located within walking distance of Ubud, but far away to only hear crickets and frogs at night. There's a yoga studio and multiple organic restaurants/cafes within a 5 min walk. This villa is perfect if you are looking for a laid back vacation.

Alejandra and Jim were hands down the best hosts, and our experience staying at their beautiful home could not have been more perfect. After we made our booking, they were immediately in touch to help with organizing transportation to the house and offering recommendations for things to do, so we could make the most of our stay. The villa is set off the beaten path about a 10 min motorbike ride from center city, but you feel connected in every way with all of the small cafes and restaurants that are right around. It was the perfect distance, because the city area got pretty congested at certain points of the day. The villa itself is clean, open and full of light--and the pool was so nice to relax in at the end of the day. Sri, the property manager, and the ladies who come in the morning to cook breakfast could not have been nicer and more helpful. If you kick in a bit of extra money, the ladies will cook eggs and black rice pudding--100% worth it. Also, get a motorbike. They are USD5/day and let us get out to explore everything.

We had a great time at Alejandra's AirBnB. It's a gorgeous place and a great location a short walk from Ubud. Made prepared amazing breakfasts for us each morning. Sri helped us arrange trips we wanted to take. Kadek gave us a great morning walk. And we were glad to have a driver who knew the place pick us up at the airport at the beginning of our stay, because the location is tricky. I'd say the charm of this place is in its simplicity. Beautiful nature sounds at night. Ducks wading through the rice paddies right outside your window. The pool was amazingly refreshing. We used the provided mosquito net at night, which we thought was fun. Because the house is so open, you may find yourself rescuing a frog from the shower or helping a dragonfly get back outside. For us, it's exactly what we wanted. Great spot.

Thank you for taking the time to write. I loved chatting with you in the pool and will definitely make sure to check on the things you mentioned. I didn't know . And will add a section on tipping. That's a great idea. Have a wonderful trip back. Alejandra
