Dukuh VIllage Homestay is part of a charming Balinese compound just outside a small village 6kms north of Ubud, Bali. It is run by Made Arka, a fine traditional and modern artist, and his wife Rinin. There are four accommodation options; a 'backpacker' room, a suite of upstairs rooms, sky view apartment and this listing.
Di Bawah is a large bedroom opening onto a courtyard terrace with views of ricefields, trees and the sunset sky. Room facilities with ceiling fan, mosquito net own fridge and your bathroom has hot water and a bath. There is WiFi, a small lending library, off road parking for motorbikes and car. There is a restaurant within a few minutes walk at a neighboring resort. Delivery food available.
There is no public transport in the area, but local private drivers can be engaged at reasonable rates for trips to town or tours.
This is a traditional family home, so guests can feel they are in the 'real Bali', with the daily round of ritual offerings, tending the land and animals and extended family activities going on all around- while also having privacy and the company of a small number of other guests. Painting classes are available, as well as participating in the daily cooking, market trips, making offerings and other aspects of Bali life. A swimming pool at a nearby resort can be used by Homestay guest for $5 per person included a towel.
We can recommend and give local-knowledge advice to travelers about Indonesian language teachers, dance and music classes, yoga and the many
other activities around Ubud.
We highly recommend staying with Made and Rinin while visiting Ubud! They were very warm and welcoming hosts (and wonderful people in general) and were very responsive to our needs during our one month stay. Their house is about a 15-20 minute ride from the city center situated in a Balinese neighborhood with extensive rice fields. We rented a motor bike from them for a very reasonable price, and it was very reliable.
We stayed in the "sky view" which was very spacious and offers a great view of the surrounding rice fields. The natural light that floods into the rooms is beautiful. Also, the layout of the bedroom, bathroom, living room, and porch / kitchen makes a lot of sense functionally. Basically, the space just feels good. The room is designed with space between the top of the walls and the roof. The good side of this design is that a lovely breeze comes into the room. Because of this, although it did not have AC, it was very comfortable throughout the day and night. The down side of this design is that the floor of the room can get a little messy at points because of bugs and the lizards that liked hanging out on the ceiling. But, the staff at the homestay will clean often if you ask, and we found that that fixed the issue. The view and the breeze were well worth it for us!
At first the family was very nice and good hosts. They welcomed us great and the check-In was without any problems. In the morning there was made a great balinese breakfast and the family tried to help as good as possible.
But the Backpacker room is directly next to the kitchen and the wall between it has a big hole under the roof. So you hear everything that happens in the kitchen. If you want to go to bed early its not possible to sleep. But the family tried to cook before we went to sleep after we told them that it was a bit noisy. The room and the bathroom were a little unclean and we had some ants in our room. But it was ok for three nights and for this price. For transit the room is sufficient but for a complete holiday its not the best solution.
Our stay at Dukuh Village homestay with Made Arka and Rinin is probably the highlight of our stay in Bali. Surrounded by ricefields and a few kilometers from the city, it is a convenient place where you can still enjoy nature. Our room is beautiful, Balinese designed, clean, with strong wifi connection, warm water, private bath and kitchen, all the conveniences of modern life. But it is very much close to nature that you can hear frogs and cicadas at night. Our hosts are very helpful and their family is warm and accommodating, I will definitely go back to their place and I highly recommend it to travelers who want to have an awesome Balinese experience.
Es un sitio encantador con unas vistas estupendas a los campos de arroz. Es un lugar muy tranquilo.
My four year old and I had two nights at Made and Rinin's accommodation, and I would recommend to people seeking a quite retreat from the madness of Ubud. Cleanliness was a bit of an issue, (just the bathroom) however for the price it was a good value stay. It would be a great place to go for a couple of weeks and settle in, which we would have done apart from the transport issue - it was a bit expensive and inconvenient when you have a small child! Better for people who can ride a scooter around! Very welcoming hosts, and gorgeous rice paddy setting.
