“We cancelled our other accommodation and decided to stay the whole time here." Kevin, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)

Enjoy fabulous restaurants, boutique shops, vibrant night life and the popular Seminyak beach only 500 metres away. Antique, unique, and very, very sexy.

Shikumen houses originated in China in the mid 1800′s, and featured large stone gateways opening onto enclosed courtyards, and a mixture of Eastern and Western architecture. With the advancing pace of development, Shikumen are fast disappearing in mainland China, and are the inspiration behind the Shikumen Suite.
The antique houses used in the Shikumen Villa & Suite were originally from Java, which has a significant Chinese population, and the original structure, comprising a traditional Chinese square arch, is constructed from century old teak wood. The distinctive design for the Shikumen features the use of large gateways and shaded courtyards, and the interior design incorporates rich reds, crisp whites and natural wood, as well as artifacts from the Indonesian archipelago. The lighting has been built into colourful traditional bird cages hung from bamboo racks, creating a gentle ambience. All these elements are skilfully blended with modern conveniences and contemporary aesthetics to create a comfortable and elegant environment.

We stayed in the Shikumen suit which was a beautiful big room with a really comfortable bed. The room looks and feels amazing upon entering, but functionality isn't great. The t.v. needed fixing (first the cable then remote), the lights were flashing and needed fixing. It rained quite a lot during our stay so the smell coming up through the drain in the shower was unpleasant (although maybe this is quite common in most places in Bali). The taps spray water everywhere too. It was very noisy at nighttime until 2-3am with local nightclubs. The pool was really beautiful and the staff were really lovely. The massage that was included was fantastic.

We wanted to love the Shikumen Suite because on the surface it was beautiful, but it turned out to be more about design than function. The shower lacked pressure and ran cold, the faucets sprayed water everywhere or ran at a trickle with no in-between, and in the evening the room was very dark and lacked sufficient light. The staff were generally pleasant and attempted to accommodate us: they could not repair the shower during our stay so offered to let us use the adjacent room's bathroom, but they forgot to bring an extra light for the room. I would advise against using their laundry service, as the outside facility where they sent my clothes left stains on two shirts. The staff reluctantly agreed to cover the nominal cost of the laundry service, but only after I insisted that the stains were new. This should never have been a conversation. The fact that it had to be and that the gesture was not automatic struck me as unprofessional.

Lou has been a great host to communicate wit - very responsive - so I felt that we were in good hands from teh outset. Arriving at Ginger Villas (where the Sukumen Suite is one of the rooms/facilities offered) was easy too - as the airport transfer was arranged by them. We were greeted by a lovely receptionist who handed us the keys, and were shown to the room by door boy. The suite is huge - it's an amazing 'space within a space' - pictures give you a good idea, but when you are in the middle of teh room for the first time you feel the space and airiness of it. Two airconditioning units mean the room never gets too hot. There is a lovely (perfect for me as I am quite small) ceramic bath in the room, as well as a huge bathroom/loo/shower. The bed, again, is massive and extremely comfortable. THere are towels and bathrobes that you can use during the well as a minibar (priced pretty much the same as the stores) and unlimited drinking water.. as well as tea and coffee... The pool is right outside your door - you can pick up your morning muffins from the reception and have them by the pool with your coffee... THere is also a very helpful guide book on all the good places to eat and see in the area... Ginger villas are in an excellent location, just 'on the other side' of a street full of bars and restaurants. You are safe from all teh noise, yet right next to the action. The beach is about ten minutes walk - which is ideal as well. I couldn't have wished for a better place to stay in Seminyak!

We moved to Bali from Australia in 2007 with our youngest son. In Australia, my husband Grahame was a highly acclaimed Theatre Director and Writer whilst I was a successful Theatre Set and Costume Designer, Tour Manager and Producer. Having reached the peak in our respective careers and with our eldest son married and living in Sydney, it was time for a new adventure, a new life and a new challenge. We had finished renovating our dream home in Fremantle and I had my dream job as Cultural Development Officer for the City of Fremantle. But I've learnt that the problem with making your dreams come true, you are sure to have another dream. We were ready for a new adventure. When I was offered a job to teach at a school in Bali we leaped at the opportunity and within 6 weeks we had packed and moved to Bali to the surprise of friends and family. We were ready to immerse ourselves into a new culture whilst at the same time we hoped to indulge in some of the delights this tropical island has to offer. We built our Bali tropical dream home and that was meant to be that. Our plan wasn't to work in the hospitality industry running a small boutique hotel but that is what we have ended up doing. It started with Grahame finding a couple of antique Chinese houses which we immediately fell in love with and thought we could do something interesting with. As a professional set designer I feel like I have set the stage again, but this time it is for a tropical holiday for our guests to indulge all of their senses in the sights, sounds, tastes and tropical delights this beautiful island has to offer. Grahame on the other hand is still directing and writing, but now he is directing numerous workers, housekeepers, cooks, gardeners, tradesmen and maintenance people in the task of providing a relaxing tropical holiday so that this time your dream can come true.

We feel very fortunate to be able to call Bali home and join our Bali friends and family in welcoming you to this special island and trust you have a wonderful holiday in the good care of our wonderful staff.
