Mike offered us an upgrade to the ocean view room. This room had an amazing view of the coast and sunsets and overlooked the bar at the hotel. The room was clean and. Water pressure in the shower was the best we've had to date in Costa Rica.
The pool is beautiful at the hotel and the bar is a great place to sit and relax. Their pizza is also delicious and very fresh - which you'll come to learn is unusual in Costa Rica :p.
Mike and his wife were very friendly and accommodating and we'd definitely return.
I think some of the negative reviews here may be from individuals who have not been in Costa Rica long. In the rainforest you have to deal with a few bugs and other critters on occasion, but the room itself was clean and comfortable.
Unfortunately, this is not what we expected from an airb&b listing. This place was just an old hotel that was not very well maintained. Staff was pleasant and helpful. But the room was old and dingy. Hardly slept due to the horrible mattress. We would not recommend this place. We came across mike once and wasn't impressed.
We have been on this hotel only for one night and we did not really like the place.
We had trouble contacting by phone the host (Mike) and finally, once we got to the place, they gave us a room that was on the main road, noisy and dark.
The place is average and I would prefer other places if I return to Manuel Antonio.
We were rather disappointed by this place.
Firstly, I do not think it is in line with the spirit of AirBnB. Hosts on AirBnB should want to do just that: host. AirBnB should not be just another method of publicizing your hotel, where a whole staff is employed to run the property, and the "host" is not present at all.
As it turned out, the room was just one in a complex of rooms that make up the "La Colina" Hotel. We were greeted by the receptionist and taken care of as any guests in your garden variety, mediocre hotel (I guess it was friendly enough). That is our main criticism.
Other than that, the following were a problem:
1) The ceiling fan in the room creaked and gyrated like crazy, and looked to be in danger of falling down, unless we kept it at the lowest setting. Luckily, this place does have an air conditioner, which kept out most of the heat and humidity.
2) The air conditioner motor is situated above the entry door. Therefore the entry is always wet, and you get dripped on from above. Plus, it adds to the noise.
3) The hotel is right on the main road leading into Manuel Antonio. Our room was the closest to the road. At about 5:00 AM the noise from trucks and motorcycles was unbearable. It felt like we were actually sitting on the side of the road. We were fortunate to have ear plugs with us.
4) The door to the room was open when we arrived, and so the room had a good amount of mosquitoes to start the evening with. We managed to kill them though. Additionally, the door was very hard to open and close.
Otherwise, the room itself was what I expected it to be: just a small place to sleep in. It was generally clean, and there was hot water. It was close to the Manuel Antonio National Park, which is the only reason we came to that area.
The restaurant food was fine, and the (email hidden) were actually very good. The grounds themselves are ok.
