A special colonial style house, with high ceilings and a veranda that looks out over the city. The area is quiet, entirely residential, and is a short walk to shops and the Metro, connecting to the beaches & city centre.
Our house is available at any time of the year for short periods. There is a large double bed in the single bedroom, and a sofa bed in the living room which can accommodate an extra person - or two if appropriate.
The house has been completely renovated and lies in the quiet residential area of Gloria, in one of the oldest parts of Rio de Janiero, with views across the city to the Christ. It is very close to public transport to the City Centre via the Metro and bus, so is well placed for major events like Carnaval. It is surrounded by old-style private houses, quiet cobbled streets, and small bars, and sits on a small hill with a colonial era church on top – the street is often used by Brazilian TV companies as a location for historical dramas. The house is close to Flamengo beach (15 minutes walk). 10 minutes walk to the Metro (Catete/Gloria), halfway between the city centre and the beach areas of Ipanema, Botafogo and Copacabana. Taxis from the Metro take only 5 minutes to the house. The cultural quarter of Lapa is a few minutes walk away, with its famous bars, music clubs (samba, forro, choro, jazz etc), restaurants, antique shops and nightlife. It is close to a wide range of shops and malls, cafes, banks, museums etc. In many ways, this quiet area has all the charm of the more famous Santa Teresa, but is much closer to city centre transport and shopping, as well as the beach areas.
The accommodation is on one floor, with entrance hall, living/dining room, with an extra living space by the front door, one large bedroom, shower/bathroom, and a good-sized kitchen with gas cooker and fridge freezer. The large dining room opens to a veranda with views across the city. Secure entrance from the street with videophone entry, free parking on the street. Free wifi broadband is provided, with local and national TV.
During your stay, you will have exclusive access to a good sized kitchen with gas cooker, fridge freezer, supplied with utensils, pots & pans, cutlery, plates etc. Also exclusive use of the shower bathroom and toilet, with electrically heated shower. The kitchen and bathroom are at one end of the large dining room with table and chairs for four people; the dining room opens out into the covered veranda, with views to the rest of the city and the Christ. The large main bedroom has a king size double bed, and TV. The dining room opens into the living room, with a sofa and sofa bed. The entire floor is self contained. Free wifi is provided.
Interaction with Guests
We try to meet every guest when they arrive, show them round the house and give them any local information they might need. There may be times when we are away, and you will be met by our cleaner, or very occasionally you will have collect the keys from another address - but we will give you plenty of warning if that happens. During your stay you will be able to contact us at Patricia's mother's house, which is a short distance away; she will deal with any questions and queries that arise during your stay. We have a cleaner who can provide extra cleaning during your stay. When you leave, we will meet you to collect the keys and check that everything is in order. You need to make arrangements for this as early as possible in your stay.
The street is set on a hill overlooking the city. It is very quiet, entirely residential, and because it is a cul de sac, there is very little traffic at any time of day. It has quite a European feel, with its cobbled roads and old houses. A terrific range of shops, banks and services are only 10 minutes walk away at the foot of the street. On Saturdays an organic market is held on the other side of Gloria, while on Sundays there is a wonderful food market nearby. The National Museum is 10 minutes walk in Rua Catete, with a cafe and a tree-shaded park to sit in.
Rua Catete, the main road at the foot of our street, has a number of bus routes that go to all parts of the city, plus the Metro (Catete) which will take you either to the beach areas, or the city centre in a matter of minutes. You can walk to Lapa, the 'Bohemian' neighbourhood with restaurants, music bars and antique shops, in less than 20 minutes. If you hire a car, you can park for free outside the front door.
You can travel from the International airport by taxi or bus, but one of the best and cheapest ways is to take the hourly shuttle bus that goes from the International airport to Santos Dumont, the domestic airport in the city centre (just $R13 per person). From there it is only 10 minutes by taxi to the house.
Other Things to Note
This is an very attractive house in the colonial style, with its high ceilings and arched doorways. You really get a feel for the city as it was at the start of the 20th century. Its location close to the city centre makes it easy to explore the many aspects of the city as a whole, not just the beach areas.
No smoking anywhere in the house, please ! And no pets. Please keep noise to a reasonable level - this is a quiet residential neighbourhood, well away from the hustle and bustle of Rio's main streets. Please do not stick, nail or pin anything to the walls. No additional guests overnight without the owners' express permission. Rubbish must be put out onto the kerb in plastic bags on the collection days that will be notified on your arrival.
Humphrey collected $2325 for a rental we never were able to use. We had a family emergency that delayed our arrival in Brazil and unfortunately, Humphrey had difficulties accommodating our check in when we tried to update our arrival date, which was well within the dates of our pre-paid accommodations.
Humphrey contacted airbnb several times to complain about our lack of communication, despite the fact that we had exchanged several, and timely, emails. Very confusing indeed.
I partly blame myself for not paying closer attention to his last minute cancellation reviews.
I have a couple of my homes on Airbnb, and you will find that I have wonderful reviews, and my experience with Humphrey was thankfully an anomaly. I only wish we could have stayed at his rental while we were in Brazil. Nevertheless, I hope that Humphrey improves his check-in process and his approach to communicating with his guests as the rental looked lovely.
Every once in a while you stay in a place that's so good you wish it were your own. Humphry's house in Glória is a fine example of this. Absolutely beautiful place with buckletloads of character in a peaceful setting, yet five minutes on foot from Catete high street with everything you need (restaurants, bars, shops, banks, metro). I spent many an enjoyable afternoon / evening on the veranda with friends, whose jaws dropped when they walked in and saw the wooden high ceilings. This was a refreshing change from the endless clinical white apartments you see in Rio's Zona Sul, and was also by far the most well-equipped place in which I stayed while living in the city for four months.
Humphry was hugely helpful during the initial enquiry process over email, then Patricia was very friendly when showing me the house before I reserved - she even took me to the local bar round the corner for a drink.
Thank you Humphry and Patricia - I shall definitely be back!
Wonderful experience. Patricia was helpful and friendly. The apartment is bright, airy, fun space, high on a hill above the Gloria neighborhood. Getting up the hill was a bit daunting at first, but I got used to it after a couple of days. There are moto taxis at the bottom of the hill that will get up up the hairpin turns for 2.5 reals. The most lovely thing was the small monkeys who live in the lovely avocado tree right outside the kitchen window.
Many thanks for your review - it is always pleasing to hear from guests who have appreciated the particular charm of Rua Barao de Guaratiba. I must say that as a senior citizen', I find the walk up the hill a bit challenging when it is very hot, but it can only do one good. I have yet to try the moto service: a natural caution holds me back, I think.
We do hope that you come again sometime.
Humphry & Patricia
Finding this house was an absolute gem - we went during the Carnval period and the price was extremely reasonable, and the location was unbeatable. Gloria is in the middle of everything, and the metro is a short walk away. The one caveat to this beautiful, and characterful home is that there is no air conditioning, although fans were provided and were very useful during warm nights. From the beginning, Humphry and Patricia were very responsive to all of our queries. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.
We didn t see a lot Patricia during our stay in Rio.The place is correct not really charming but well located(around 20min of the beaches in metro).
In the beginning of our stay, there was not hot water in the shower( a man came and fixed it...) and the toilets were stuck...
The glasses and plates in the kitchen were fat and needed to be cleant...
In the other hand, Patricia was nice to print our voucher for the bus and to book a taxi the day of our departure.
I think she is too busy to take care at 100% of these invitees( customers?).
In conclusion, Rio is a magic city, we liked it very much, but if you can stay in an other place, don t hesitate!
We are used to book réservations in US, Italy, Croatia and others countries around the world....So we can compare easily with this experience: the welcome was very cold, the house was dirty and not so charming, the mattress old and not confortable....
Indeed, this is not a hotel and we choose many time to book in a house or apartment around the world to live as people in the country and to share with local population...
I repeat you won t find it at Patricia's home and she will accept this simple criticism!

I am helping to manage the listed properties on behalf of my wife, Patricia Costa. I am English, she is Brazilian, and we divide our time between the UK and Brazil. We both work in film and TV production, although I am semi-retired now: and I am also involved in film education at university level. Between us, we speak English, Portuguese, French and Spanish, so we can help a wide range of people with queries about how to go about things in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil generally. We both love Brazilian music and culture, and are also involved in environmental issues, and follow the development of Brazil as an exciting emerging country with great interest. We like to have a friendly relationship with our guests, on the basis that you should treat people as you would like to be treated.
